All the hyperbole, the grandstanding the rhetoric all over. We have a result and the British public have spoken. We have a conservative government.
Are we surprised?

pearl79 Fri 13-Dec-19 23:05:09

coolioc and the rest, you think you're the only ones who can understand what the referendum choices were. we were all lied to, but many still understood. no one would have suggested the eu was, or is, perfect; but that phrase about the baby and the bathwater come to mind. if leaving had been a sensible choice, there would have been no need to lie about any of it!!!

sazz1 Fri 13-Dec-19 23:30:40

I think some of Labour's incredible policies are what cost them the election. Free internet 4day week etc etc. People just didn't see it happening or decided it would bankrupt the country. Also the fact that they wanted another Brexit referendum people are sick of hearing about Brexit after 3 years. Real shame as Labour would fund the NHS and schools much better than what Tory party has done.

Bluecat Fri 13-Dec-19 23:34:12

Looks like the end of the Union may be in sight. A strong party to push for Scotland's independence, more Nationalists than Unionists elected in Northern Ireland.... That leaves the English and Welsh, having voluntarily banished themselves from their biggest trading partner, shivering together in the Cold.

God, what a piddling insignificant little 'world power' we will be.

Chestnut Fri 13-Dec-19 23:45:44

Despite the general feeling of optimism due to Boris sprinkling us with some magic fairy dust, gloom and doom still abounds on this thread! I thought that just for one day the depressing rhetoric might stop so we could look forward instead of backwards, but all these people seem to see is misery whichever way they look. How about waiting to see what happens over the next year.

Marjgran Fri 13-Dec-19 23:46:48

An earlier comment called Johnson “humble”. Deluded. He is entirely self serving and completely untrustworthy. Listen to those who know him or had children with him. Corbyn also disliked and distrusted by those he worked with. Both narcissists but Johnson a sociopath. What a state we are in.

AlisonKF Fri 13-Dec-19 23:52:26

How can you! The majority of comments here indicate most on Gransnet are Tories. Boris Johnson has proved o is a compulsive liar, has flaky personal morals and over and over again that he is not to be trusted. Are you all, with a few exceptions, blind to what has been happening for thousands under nine years of Tory government. Are you, smug and comfortably off, like Boris ( who shows little respect for women)

Chestnut Fri 13-Dec-19 23:57:07

Here we go again, more Boris bashing.

Marjgran Sat 14-Dec-19 00:06:15

Oh G-d, a choice between the cult of Boris or the cult of Corbyn. Just look at Johnson’s cabinet, the most right wing entitled team. An earlier post actually said Johnson “drained the swamp”, the Trump phrase. All the Trumpists are coming out of the shadows. I am ashamed. Johnson is shamelessly unethical. How can you?

maddyone Sat 14-Dec-19 00:26:15

I’ve thought for long enough that an insurance type scheme to pay for elderly care was a good idea. At the moment, anyone who has any savings or those who own their own home, will pay the full cost of any care they need themselves until only £22,000 is left. So if a person has worked to provide for themselves they will pay. If they have lived on benefits and therefore not been able to save, their care is free. An insurance scheme would end this apparent inequality.

‘Piddling little power’

Hmmm, well with a population of approximately 60 million and being the sixth biggest economy in the world, I don’t think we’ll be a piddling little power, though I couldn’t really care less if we are. But most of the countries in the EU are piddling little powers aren’t they, Estonia population a little over a million, Latvia population two million, Slovenia population two million, Cyprus population less than a million, Luxembourg population half a million, Malta population less than half a million. I could carry on but you get the picture Bluecat don’t you.
You are talking tosh.

maddyone Sat 14-Dec-19 00:39:42

Boris is unethical and all the other utter tosh.
Let’s think about Corbyn, anti Semite, friend of terrorists, Marxist. Great qualifications for a Prime Minister.

twiglet77 Sat 14-Dec-19 00:46:17

I stayed up until 04.00 to see the local result and am delighted with the Conservatives' decisive win. Good to see Dominic Grieve and the other rebels are out.

I'm honestly baffled that anyone thinks the next 5 years would be better with Corbyn as PM. How could this vile terrorist supporter expect the country to back him. Ghastly, nasty weasel. It's impossible to imagine him representing the UK on the world stage, but looking at some of the potential contenders for his replacement, they're all dreadful, there isn't a figure in the party with charisma, nor any kind of ability as a statesman.

I hope Nicola Sturgeon gets what she deserves - and it isn't Scottish Independence. She's another nasty person, with such tunnel-vision in the madness of her personal crusade.

Caro57 Sat 14-Dec-19 06:27:53

Urmstongran - Regardless of which side of the fence one sits on these are such true words, thank you for staying, so well, what the country has been saying for years. Thank goodness we can now move on from the ridiculous and damaging stalemate

You could have fooled me from just reading here. I thought the exact opposite in fact.

grammargran Sat 14-Dec-19 08:19:53

If only we had a party of National Coalition where the best, most competent, sensible politicians from all persuasions came together to try to sort out this horrendous situation we find ourselves in. It really should not be left in the hands of one party, hide bound as it is by its own ideology and high flown promises, to sort. The flaw in my dream is the competent, sensible part; all parties are sadly lacking in both with very few exceptions, the two main party leaders being the most flawed. Ah well, it was a nice thought ......

Ooeyisit Sat 14-Dec-19 08:54:02

We need to accept the vote now and bring this great country of ours back to stability and tolerance . We should have closure now and just get on with it instead of moaning and being full of gloom . Cheer up ,be happy and enjoy a happy Christmas and prosperous New year help those less fortunate and count your many blessings .

CoolioC Sat 14-Dec-19 08:55:03

Maddyone, I agree regarding elderly care. I met people who chose to live on benefits, gained free care and in fact, when the time came paupers funerals. I do not condone their way of life, they enjoyed socialising. But who paid in the end?

Too many doo Gooders in society willing to throw cash at the problem, when it’s volunteers required. Your time is worth 10 times more than cash.

Over to AprilRose on this?

Grany Sat 14-Dec-19 09:10:30

Those of you glad that Johnson conservative won election did you know that doctors in our wonderful hospitals are disappointed at the result of the election? My daughter is a doctor and said all the doctors were disappointed Johnson won.

And did you know the people calling Jeremy Corbyn names on here the man standing up for the many against the establishment. The establishment and the total smear campaign Read this piece in the Medium medium.com/@caityjohnstone/someone-interfered-in-the-uk-election-and-it-wasnt-russia-b98700a4a12?

You must see two sides to get to the truth.

Remember Trump said our NHS is definitely on the table.

Remember Johnson is untrustworthy so many lies he has been found out saying.

Anniebach Sat 14-Dec-19 09:20:34

Grany. Trump lies often

Marjgran Sat 14-Dec-19 09:21:33

You rarely meet a doctor who votes Conservative

Marjgran Sat 14-Dec-19 09:22:12

Or a social worker. Or most professors of social science... I wonder why!

Anniebach Sat 14-Dec-19 09:25:18

I have never asked a doctor how he/she votes

Blondiescot Sat 14-Dec-19 09:29:40

I'd rather be a "do-gooder" than a couldn't-care-less!

CoolioC Sat 14-Dec-19 09:32:37

Blondiescot
“Do gooders” generally just talk about it around the dinner table not having a clue what it’s like on the streets.

Chestnut Sat 14-Dec-19 09:37:59

Agreed, NHS workers usually vote Labour, but they should remember that we need a strong economy to run the NHS otherwise where do they think the money will come from? Labour don't have a clue with money, they just think they can play Robin Hood and drain the country's wealth.
