Is this the beginning of the end for the United Kingdom?

Results in Scotland and N. Irelnd indicate that those countries will not be happy to remain in the UK especially as Brexit bites. Can it be that the Conservative and Unionist Party has actually written the death certificate for the Union?

SirChenjin Sun 15-Dec-19 18:08:37

I agree growstuff

I also wonder if we’ll have a deco max option along with yes/no in order to try and sway those of us who abhor Johnson and everything his ilk stand for but who aren’t quite ready to break up the union completely.

growstuff Sun 15-Dec-19 18:03:27

I suspect that Johnson won't put up much of a defence to Scotland leaving the UK. At the moment, he has hardly any MPs in Scotland, so it would strengthen his position in England. It would also appeal to English nationalists, who seem to think that if Scotland wants to go its own way, let them.

Labaik Sun 15-Dec-19 17:59:46

I think that, with people seeing how difficult Brexit is going to be, any Scottish independence referendum will be closely scrutinised and, as with the leave vote here I can't help but feel that, although many Scottish people have voted for the SNP it might not necessarily be because they want independence.

I would also like to add Miss Sturgeon does not speak for me.

Fiachna50 Sat 14-Dec-19 20:50:21

I will be heartbroken if my country leaves the UK. I also don't think we can afford it. The Institute of Fiscal Studies (an independent body) dont seem to think its a good idea either. Im really surprised the SNP gets as much support as it does and don't understand why. Both my MP and MSP are useless. My MP does not reply to emails. Im amazed they were voted back in! Anyway, it's not to do with Barnett or money. For me personally I have English and Irish family. I holiday in England, sometimes Wales. These countries and inc Northern and Southern Ireland are my neighbours and friends. Id be devastated if we all split. Im also rather concerned at the divisions within my country now. As far as Im concerned we had a referendum and I certainly don't want another. There is still much division from the last one.

It’s all very well wanting to rejoin but she has to show us that she’s got a clear membership pathway agreed with EU leaders - I’m not prepared to accept any more empty promises from politicians on this issue.

GrandmaMoira Sat 14-Dec-19 17:32:36

I've always been against Scottish independence but now think it a good idea. Scotland wants to rejoin the EU post independence so I could become an EU citizen again, having been born in Scotland.

SirChenjin Sat 14-Dec-19 17:19:04

What horrible comments would they be?

Granny23 Sat 14-Dec-19 14:47:02

If you consider all the horrible comments that Swinson has directed at Sturgeon during this election then I am not surprised at her reaction.

Blondiescot Sat 14-Dec-19 14:15:33

And it's exactly attitudes like yours, Violettham, which make many of us want independence!

Putin congratulates UK's Johnson as EU leaders warn of Brexit outcome

Russian President Vladimir Putin congratulated the prime minister for his decisive victory, saying "I am sure that the development of constructive dialogue and cooperation in various spheres would be fully in the interests of our countries' peoples and the entire European continent," he said in a statement.

Well done Johnson - this is fully in the interests of Putin!

grandtanteJE65 Sat 14-Dec-19 14:00:56

I believe the Court of Session may be able to overrule the prime minister if he refuses Scotland the right to hold a referendum.

And now that the Unionists in N. Ireland have lost ground, I think we may well live to see the end of the United Kingdom.

SirChenjin Sat 14-Dec-19 13:56:21

If the majority decides to vote yes to independence then I’m sure we’ll manage just fine without your visit Violettham smile

Violettham Sat 14-Dec-19 13:54:06

I simply cannot understand why there is all this talk of Independence surely we are better as a united country working together. However if this happens I will not ever visit these countries or buy anything made there. They may not miss me as I am sure I will be told by many I will miss them as they are beautiful countries but I feel strongly if they dont want us I do not want them.

SirChenjin Sat 14-Dec-19 13:46:55

I think Sturgeon went too far. She’s in a position of power and was obviously delighted to have won the seat but she went completely over the top with Jo Swinson. Funnily enough, she’s managed not to behave that way when they’ve won other marginal seats by very small majorities. I’d say the same if Salmond or any other politician (and in particular, the leader of the party and country) had behaved that way, so you can save your ‘it’s because she’s a woman’.

SueDonim Sat 14-Dec-19 13:41:00

And as far as I am concerned, her reaction was gloating and unedifying. It’s all in the eye of the beholder but if she wants to convert people to her POV then she needs to look at the message she’s sending out.

SirChenjin Sat 14-Dec-19 13:30:29

And yet they voted Tory Joelsnan - I just hope they’re not too disappointed in the coming years.

Joelsnan Sat 14-Dec-19 13:12:56

All the Scot and NI, who consider they are being treated badly by Westminster should come and live in the North of England, they would then recognise what mis treatment feels like. These were the counties that generated the wealth that made this alliance of small countries Great...and now...

Blondiescot Sat 14-Dec-19 13:11:43

I didn't say you were, I said other posters had done so. I've seen far worse "celebrations" by candidates of varying parties at election countres over the years. As far as I'm concerned, she was celebrating her own candidate's win in a hard-fought seat, as she's perfectly entitled to do.

SueDonim Sat 14-Dec-19 13:02:43

I wasn’t attacking her for her appearance. I don’t even recall what she was wearing. It was her action that was unpleasant.

Blondiescot Sat 14-Dec-19 13:01:17

Clearly some other posters on here feel differently - attacking her for her appearance, etc.

SueDonim Sat 14-Dec-19 13:00:01

What a strange comment. I’d find it just as offensive in a man.

Blondiescot Sat 14-Dec-19 12:58:07

Here we go again. Nicola Sturgeon was celebrating her party's win in a hard-fought seat. Nothing wrong with that. I'm sure a male politician wouldn't be attracting as much bile for doing so.

SueDonim Sat 14-Dec-19 12:38:16

I live in a Scottish pro-union area and would be very sad indeed that my family would end up with different nationalities if Scotland becomes independent. However, if the majority of Scots decide they want independence I will have to swallow that and adjust my plans accordingly.

Nicola Sturgeon is being duplicitous, though. The SNP literature that came through my door clearly stated that they were begging for our votes in order to topple the Tories and that they recognised that a vote for SNP didn’t necessarily mean a vote for independence. The ink was scarcely dry on the results papers when Sturgeon was claiming exactly that! angry

Those of you in England may also have missed Sturgeon’s triumphalist reaction to Jo Swinson losing her seat. It was a display of most unpleasant nationalism. sad

jura2 Sat 14-Dec-19 10:54:00

It would be tragic - but the way they have been treated- I truly could not blame them.

There is a huge surge of sympathy in the EU and where I live, for the Scots. I was talking to a multi-millionaire business man at a meeting the other day (we are both on management committee of a Museum locally)- and he loves Scotland and good Malt- and said he would be interested in opening a plant in Scotland if ever. I do believe that many EU businesses would be happy to invest in Scotland.
