As a bit of amusement I was trying to work ut how long Boris will stick at the job of PM. He's not big on commitment. I think he'll want to go down in history as the man who did Brexit, but I don't think he'll wnt to stick around afterwards. I think he'll be getting himself bounced up to the H of Lords once it's done. Anyone else want to guess at how long he'll last?

Putting December 2020 into law is not going to influence the EU one jot in fact it may harden their position. The U.K. always had a weak negotiating position, nothing has changed, the EU are not going to allow any cherry-picking, the UK is not going to get any advantage over member states.

That was their position on day one they have not changed, rather that betray their own members they will suffer the consequences of a “no deal”. The current Withdrawl Deal allows for a range of outcomes from a very soft cooperative exit, to a “ no deal “ third country exit with tariffs on everything.

Who cares! All as bad as each other!

Politicians never learn the lessons of history they are so confident of their own diatribe and the flunkies that back them up hang onto their coat tails. Michael Foot made exactly the same mistake, you have to look a “statesman” and have sensible policies to head a government.

During the election results the Labour activists looked visibly shell shocked by the scale of the defeat, they really had been believing their own propaganda. If you really want to get into power just use your brains, elect a credible leader with sensible policies- they probably won’t!.

He is playing a high risk strategy with enshrining the Brexit date in law, banking on the fact that the EU wants a deal as much as the UK. The EU never actually tookMay seriously because of her weak position and underlying Remain belief. Maybe putting the end of 2020 into law will concentrate the EU's mind - or then again maybe not tchgrin

They haven’t been back since Gordon Brown actually, not TB, and there were 10 years of a Labour Govt before this current 9 years of a Tory govt, (five of which were under the Tory/Liberal coalition)

How long Boris is in charge all depends on who the next Labour leader is, if they pick someone like Emily Thornberry or any of the other Corbynistas then he will be in power for a very long time

Oopsminty Wed 18-Dec-19 13:38:26

Labour hasn't been back since Tony Blair was in power

50 odd years and Blair was the only Labour candidate to get victory

Bizarre that Labour are treated as a direct opponent to the Conservatives

The only time they've ever won was when they had a 'I'm Tory Plan B' in charge

*deprived areas up north

It's like one giant Hovis advert here. Trouble at mill.

SirChenjin Wed 18-Dec-19 13:35:40

He won’t fulfill them and Labour will be back - such is politics.

Firecracker123 Wed 18-Dec-19 13:34:00

He'll last 5 years because of the fixed term parliament and if he fulfills his manifesto promises Labour will never get back in power again. Labour are finished as a party.

SirChenjin Wed 18-Dec-19 13:27:27

Endless - why does anyone else need to tell you this? Presumably you understand how the EU operates and the UKs position within it?

JenniferEccles Wed 18-Dec-19 13:21:22

Boris is aware that the Tory vote from northern people may only be on loan.

To me that is the answer to how long he will remain in power.

Once Brexit is done, if he fails to deliver for those in deprived areas up north, then the next election in 5 years time could be a different story.

Of course there is always the aspect of Labour and it’s leader and policy then.

At the moment they seem to want to cling to the same idiotic policies which lost them this one.

Do the Labour Party have a death wish?

It would be difficult to think of a worse choice than Rebecca Long-Bailey.

Lilyflower Wed 18-Dec-19 13:14:09

Sorry, should read:-

Labour seem to be about to pick Rebecca Long Bailey, who is the Corbynista Mark Two candidate, to replace Jeremy Corbyn, so when people work this out they could be routed again.

Lilyflower Wed 18-Dec-19 13:12:40

Boris has always and only wanted to be PM. He is clearly enjoying it and I don't see him relinquishing power just yet.

Labour seem to be about to pick Rebecca Long Bailey to replace Jeremy Corbyn, who is the Corbynista Mark Two candidate, so when people work this out they could be routed again.

Isn't Einstein's definition of madness doing the same thing over again and hoping for a different outcome? If so, Boris is safe.

quEEEniE Wed 18-Dec-19 13:12:12

I have been disappointed with Boris espically over Nazrin , however as long as we get out of Europe l am happy for him to be in power. No more Europeans telling us no!!

Soniah Wed 18-Dec-19 12:47:50

Just don't get ill, fall behind with your rent or have no savings

endlessstrife Wed 18-Dec-19 12:42:57

You tell me then SirChenjin. As you know, tell me for SURE, the outcome of my vote. What voice do we have in the EU?

SirChenjin Wed 18-Dec-19 12:21:08

No Meryl I understand perfectly and I feel desperately sorry for them.

suttonJ Wed 18-Dec-19 12:18:22

So much twaddle talked about B's appalling record as London Mayor...remember the millions wasted on the bridge? And the water cannon costing millions, which Khan had to sell off at a loss, as they were no use to anyone.
Labour could do worse than to lie low for a couple of years, and let the s**t show commence. If given half a chance B will try and blame all the resulting mess on Labour, when in reality it must now fall fair and square on his shoulders. Stay out of it, Labour.
What odds on Carrie producing. cute baby, to distract us from all the horrors?

MerylStreep Wed 18-Dec-19 12:18:21

SirChenjin & Frenchie
If you need to ask why the 2 gentleman in the bedsit voted conservative you really don't understand human nature.
Both of you were probably just as confused when Trump was elected.

SirChenjin Wed 18-Dec-19 12:17:56

You have no idea what you just voted for but you voted for it anyway??

In what ways do you think we’re governed by the EU and what sort of voice do you think we have in that? I’m just really curious as to what you understand by our membership of the EU and how you think places like the north will benefit by Brexit.

endlessstrife Wed 18-Dec-19 12:06:16

trisher, yes maybe, but obviously not enough. I don’t know if I was right to vote ‘leave’. It may have been the worst decision ever. But I don’t like being governed by outsiders. It doesn’t make sense, and it doesn’t seem to be working. I can only go by my feelings, I have no real knowledge of politics, other than NONE of them can really be trusted! I was always a Liberal voter, by elimination. I only voted Conservative to get Boris, as we didn’t have the Brexit party option. I’m sure that’s what these guys in Burnley did too. I don’t like seeing all this animosity. None of us know for sure what will happen, but I do think, of those who voted, it was with the best of intentions.

SirChenjin Wed 18-Dec-19 11:59:34

Exactly trisher It really worries me when people say things like the North hasn’t done well as a result of the EU. The structural funding it receives is to be replaced by the shared prosperity fund iirc but of course, no details about how this will work from the Govt or how it will allocate the funds

Greta Wed 18-Dec-19 11:56:44

I don't think people as a rule are very patient. If the government does not deliver real change quickly to all the northern, former Labour voters who 'lent' him his vote I believe their trust in Boris Johnson will soon turn to anger. More promises will not suffice, they will need to feel and see that their lives are improving.
