Sensible discussion on Labour Leadership hopefuls

Just read Kier Starmer’s leadership pitch and was impressed. He’s calling for a return to a broad-church Party, but warns not to lurch too far to the right as a knee-jerk reaction.

It appears he was not allowed to speak during the election campaign which is a shame as he is a powerful speaker and powerful advocate of socialist values.. He is not a fan of McCluskey so unlikely to get his nomination.

Could we perhaps open up a sensible discussion on the likely candidates from those interested, and no just one-sentence put downs?

Ilovecheese - when you look at the history of the current leadership of the Tories, it's hard to imagine that there's anything the press could dig up that would make an impact!

Emily Thornberry had a very hard upbringing. On free school meals at one point, and worked as a cleaner. Her father, a high flyer, deserted the family I think.

Ilovecheese Wed 18-Dec-19 14:55:17

I think Caroline Flint has put paid to Emily Thornberry's chances.

My POINT Yehbutnobut, was about educational level. Being a northern graduate may not help Starmer, whether he went to Leeds or not. Being a non graduate didn't help Corbyn.

I thought you WANTED sensible debate? Make your mind up.

What would concern me about Keir Starmer's leadership would be his previous career as a barrister with an interest in human rights.
I would be concerned that the right wing press could find something in his previous career to try and discredit him, depending on who he has defended in court.

Daisymae
I too can see that a southern barrister would be a hard sell.
They like their leaders to be Eton/Oxford educated.

memories.....not a good day for punctuation or spelling here.

Yehbutnobut Wed 18-Dec-19 14:47:52

Gaga Corbyn is yesterday’s news. Move on,

pinkquartz Wed 18-Dec-19 14:47:19

oh coincidence that my post followed on from Anniebach's I got interrupted halfway took me ages.

But the working classes do have memory's.

pinkquartz Wed 18-Dec-19 14:46:20

Thornberry who doesn't much like white working class people?
that Thornberry. Oh dear.
Labour need to learn the lesson still then.

I think Jess Philips looks good. She seems to have her own mind.
Anyone O'Donnell likes will not be good if Labour ever want to get back in power.

Anniebach Wed 18-Dec-19 14:45:59

I hope not Thornberry , too much baggage,

Mocked white van man. London MP. Lady Nugee.

GagaJo Wed 18-Dec-19 14:43:35

The thing is, Corbyn wasn't a graduate and that did him no favours with Northerners, so...

Yehbutnobut Wed 18-Dec-19 14:39:10

Daisy I read he studied at Leeds Uni. That might give him some street cred with northerners?

Daisymae Wed 18-Dec-19 14:36:06

Starmer! Auto correct!!

Daisymae Wed 18-Dec-19 14:35:41

I think that Statement would be a good bet. He seems articulate and is well known which would seem to be a good starting point. I did hear on the radio that a southern barrister may be a hard sell in the north but they need someone who can move things forward quickly. He might be a good interim leader but maybe they need someone else's to lead into the next election. However whether those in charge will think with their heads remains to be seen.

Yehbutnobut Wed 18-Dec-19 14:32:02

PS there are plenty of other threads where no holds are barred. Why not use them to get your point across instead.

Yehbutnobut Wed 18-Dec-19 14:28:09

FFS why can’t we have a decent discussion on a thread, even when asked for, without it disintegrating into a fight.

Annie I appreciated that you got back on track.

As far as a couple of other go, including infantile accusations of policing the thread, what I was trying to do was have a grown up, forward facing discussion, without dragging B***t into it, or a re-run of the election.

Is that too much to ask?

Opal Wed 18-Dec-19 14:27:35

No, right photo!

GagaJo Wed 18-Dec-19 14:25:44

Wrong photo!

As opposed to a terrorist supporter and racist!

EXACTLY!

Opal Wed 18-Dec-19 14:19:15

Anniebach Wed 18-Dec-19 14:19:05

Emily Thornberry will stand for the leadership

GagaJo Wed 18-Dec-19 14:13:59

Not at all. You assume all LP members are stupid. If you check earlier in the thread, you'll see I support Starmer now.

I think the Conservative voters on here need to check themselves. They voted for Boris. He may be PM but he's a liar and a cheat.

kittylester Wed 18-Dec-19 14:11:11

gaga and the more members that think that Corbyn was the way to go the less likely they are to vote for an electable leader but rather someone in his mould- which lost them the election!

GrannyGravy13 Wed 18-Dec-19 14:03:26

I know a few people who joined the Labour Party and voted for Corbyn, their reasoning he would never be acceptable to the general public as PM, thereby enabling a Conservative Government,
