Sensible discussion on Labour Leadership hopefuls

Just read Kier Starmer’s leadership pitch and was impressed. He’s calling for a return to a broad-church Party, but warns not to lurch too far to the right as a knee-jerk reaction.

It appears he was not allowed to speak during the election campaign which is a shame as he is a powerful speaker and powerful advocate of socialist values.. He is not a fan of McCluskey so unlikely to get his nomination.

Could we perhaps open up a sensible discussion on the likely candidates from those interested, and no just one-sentence put downs?

Urmstongran well put, I would be happy to see a more centrist Labour Party with a strong and dare I say it “charismatic” leader.

Who would be good at the dispatch box and therefore keep Boris Johnson “on his toes”

As the Labour Party is at this moment in time in the grip of the far left of the Party who have very successfully ensconced themselves at the heart of Labour in the Labour Leaders office /NEC /Momentum it follows those eligible to vote in a Leadership Contest hold the trump card to vote in a candidate in the image of Corbyn/McDonnell.

Those candidates are most likely Rebecca Long Bailey, Richard Burgon, Ian Lavery given Angela Raynor is in a perceived pact with Long Bailey not to stand but if she wins Raynor will be in a plum job such as Deputy Leader. Long Bailey has been promoted by John McDonnell at every turn for quite some time now and would be the most likely winner.

If, there is a surge in members from centrist new members they would have a small chance to elect the likes of Lisa Nandy, Jess Phillips, Wes Streeting.

At the same time Labour is in the grip of ' splitting' and the party is heading for a tumultuous time as the 2 factions square off against each other, I stress ' POSSIBLY'.

NB

Omitted Stephen Kinnock, I agree he could well put his name on the ballot.

Quite a pragmatist in my opinion.

Anniebach Wed 18-Dec-19 11:31:07

There is no Labour Party , it died when Corbyn became leader.

kittylester Wed 18-Dec-19 11:45:57

John McDonnell has been calling his favourites 'Becky' and 'Angie' - presumably trying to make them more user friendly (or charismatic)

yggdrasil Wed 18-Dec-19 11:50:49

anniebach: so which party did you vote for? And why?

Urmstongran Wed 18-Dec-19 11:54:53

Yesterday I read Angela Rayner calls herself ‘Grangela’ now she is a granny at 39y!

Anniebach Wed 18-Dec-19 11:55:49

Yggdrasil I didn’t vote. There was only Lib. Labour or Tory .

The Labour candidate is a friend so I was very upset I couldn’t vote for him.

POGS Wed 18-Dec-19 12:11:23

Emily Thornberry has now announced she is going for Leader.

I hope she wins!

kittylester Wed 18-Dec-19 12:12:01

Good grief!!!!

POGS Wed 18-Dec-19 12:15:14

I think it's brilliant and it will certainly be a divisive campaign.

yggdrasil Wed 18-Dec-19 12:16:14

Anniebach: why couldn't you vote for your Labour friend? It is the policies that count, not the leader, And Johnson has now such a majority he can do what he likes with the NHS, and all the rest of the country too

Anniebach Wed 18-Dec-19 12:20:55

Yggdrasil yes policies count, so does the leader, they can not
be separated.

If I agreed with the Tory policies I would not have voted for
Johnson .

SirChenjin Wed 18-Dec-19 12:23:13

Perhaps we should be thinking less about current policies and more about core values. After all, leaders come and go with the wind.

There is no Labour Party , it died when Corbyn became leader.

Stupid comment. A lot of us JOINED because of him, thus giving your statement the lie.

Anniebach Wed 18-Dec-19 12:28:58

Yes GagaJo a lot of you joined when Corbyn became leader ,
and brought the tories to power.

Anniebach Wed 18-Dec-19 12:30:57

I joined when Jo Grimond was leader

Riverwalk Wed 18-Dec-19 12:38:22

Jo Grimond?

Anniebach Wed 18-Dec-19 12:47:41

My thoughts wandered back ?, a discussion between my parents about Grimond and Gaitskell , sorry

Oopsminty Wed 18-Dec-19 12:52:33

A lot of people joined Labour to ensure Corbyn became leader

Because he was unelectable

Seems like they made the right decision

Bit childish really and rather odd but it certainly happened.

growstuff Wed 18-Dec-19 13:01:18

Just rejoined this thread. I thought it was supposed to be a sensible discussion about the next leader of the Labour Party.

Granniesunite Wed 18-Dec-19 13:11:13

Annieback your post of12.28Says it all imo.

But I despair that the LP will ever be a party that the people of Scotland will ever trust again. We have 1 labour MP up here.!!!

From all I hear;all I research and all that the various news programs broadcast, I despair of Labour listening to the people. We have shouted out loud to them and still JC and JMCD are spouting out the same old rubbish.

They put Boris In power all by themselves. They should be ashamed.

No excuse.

GagaJo Wed 18-Dec-19 13:36:11

Point is though, it didn't DIE because of him. It GREW because of him.

Be accurate.

kittylester Wed 18-Dec-19 13:49:50

But, it didnt get in with him in charge. Indisputable fact!

GagaJo Wed 18-Dec-19 13:51:01

No, true. But more members.
