Big Ben Can Bong For Brexit

I see in my Sunday paper that the new Speaker, Sir Lindsay Hoyle, has said he would allow Big Ben to ring out to mark Brexit on January 31st, ‘If MP’s wish to do that’.
How refreshing that this Speaker seems keen to do his job impartially, so unlike the bombastic Bercow, who did everything in his power to force his own views about Brexit at every turn.

inkcog it might in the eyes of those looking down the wrong end of a telescope....if you get my drift!

Thank you Firecracker123. You may not believe this but yours is the first greeting of Christmas I have had from anyone.

Thank goodness that silly idea has been nipped in the bud. The country is so so divided and it would cause unrest and a massive demonstration.

I second that jura2.

Leavers....you've won. Remainers...you've lost. Which ever way you voted it's time to start the healing process. We cannot continue to be a divided country. That's the way extremists take over and none of us want that. The vitriolic comments on this thread help no one. We may not all agree with each other but surely we can be civil when we're discussing things.

The bonging of Big Ben would have seemed like a thumbing of the nose to almost half of the population.

Tooting29 Fri 10-Jan-20 16:42:30

Good grief what a load of vitriol over 11 bongs Australia is aflame, tensions ramping in the middle east, children in the world are starving and women are still abused.

And it didn't take long for a Nazi reference to creep in.

I give up - Bong and be done

jura2 Fri 10-Jan-20 17:02:22

vitriol, where ???

MerylStreep Fri 10-Jan-20 17:58:36

This not quite true. No request has been made yet, from the ministers. The House authorities make the decision.
Sir Lindsay Hoyle ( chairman of the authorities) wont block the request
Don't get too excited, yet.

I don't see "bonging Big Ben" as very healing.

The country is leaving the EU - I get that. Let's get on with starting the whole process in a mature way, without the jingoistic triumphalism.

jura2 Tue 14-Jan-20 16:27:30

bang a bung for Big Ben bong - he says sad

So so divisive and jingoistic - and a flipping the bird to the EU and to the vast majority of UK people who did NOT vote for this.

merlotgran Tue 14-Jan-20 16:33:03

'Bung a Bob for a Big Ben Bong!'

Boris's crowd funder. grin

GrannyGravy13 Tue 14-Jan-20 16:42:05

I guess it’s better than spending tax payers money confused

jura2 Tue 14-Jan-20 16:43:41

much better not to do it at all - considering the huge divide in the country. If half a million can be raised by his mates- he could be put to much better use, for sure.

Dinahmo Tue 14-Jan-20 17:00:52

It will cost £500,00 to fix Big Ben in order to make it bong. BJ just ain't gonna get his money. Hoorah!!!!

CraftyGranny Tue 14-Jan-20 17:18:56

For goodness sake, the vote has been cast. just accept it and get on with your own lives. I have.

jura2 Tue 14-Jan-20 17:23:42

So should they, no?

And esay to say when it does not affect you and your family massively, perhaps?

BlueBelle Tue 14-Jan-20 17:32:37

Such disrespect and such childishness is incomprehensible
I m so so ashamed of this country now I don’t even want to be associated with it I m mortally ashamed of the people who think this is a way to behave I really really am, hold your heads in shame

Grandma70s Tue 14-Jan-20 17:46:41

If they really do this, which I can’t quite believe they will, it will sound like a death knell to many of us.

I’m ashamed, too, BlueBelle, but I don’t know anybody personally who thinks like this. All my friends and family, of whatever age, are Remainers and pro-European. Reading this thread seems surreal to me.

vegansrock Tue 14-Jan-20 17:52:50

Who is going to hear the bleeding bongs? I’ll be tucked up in bed and won’t be anywhere near Westminster.

Grandma70s - like this?

Urmstongran Tue 14-Jan-20 19:16:04

The guy who owns Wetherspoons (Tim somebody) has donated £5k to kickstart the crowdfunding. Nick Ferrari from The Pledge has donated £1k.

MawB Tue 14-Jan-20 19:21:56

£500k needed - is this a good use of that money ? hmm

Barmeyoldbat Tue 14-Jan-20 19:27:33

Well I won't be celebrating, can't see anything to celebrate, just something to mourn. Why are we celebrating people who have lost jobs or are going to lose them, why are we celebrating losing our trading partners, for what? and also why are we celebrating going backwards instead of forward. Lets see how all the leavers feel in 5 years time.
