Big Ben Can Bong For Brexit

I see in my Sunday paper that the new Speaker, Sir Lindsay Hoyle, has said he would allow Big Ben to ring out to mark Brexit on January 31st, ‘If MP’s wish to do that’.
How refreshing that this Speaker seems keen to do his job impartially, so unlike the bombastic Bercow, who did everything in his power to force his own views about Brexit at every turn.

If Help For Heroes don’t accept the money, I’m sure another worthy charity will benefit.

MaizieD Tue 28-Jan-20 10:20:50

That's not the point, cg. It's the lack of preparation and forethought that is very worrying.

Lovetopaint037 Tue 28-Jan-20 10:28:01

I’m closing my eyes and ears to it all. Just given up. I certainly don’t think our iconic Big Ben should be used to “celebrate” a precarious future.

Maizie D / Labaik

Reading your posts I have to ask :-

Are you both of the opinion Help For Heroes will refuse the money? You seem assured in your posts that there was a stupidity in naming Help For Heroes in the first place.

Labaik who / what / where is behind Scram News?

Labaik Tue 28-Jan-20 18:12:12

I have got no idea who is behind Scram news but did check that what was said in the article said is actually correct before I posted. Which it is. Personally, I don't think ex servicemen should rely on charity; this country should provide for them. Mark Francois, who seems to think of himself as some sort of soldier is, I believe, just someone who has been in the T.A. for a while. The whole thing has been a PR disaster, imo but I wouldn't expect anything less from Francois.

Labaik

Perhaps the sources of information you ' checked ' with before posting what Scram News said could be of interest.

I had never heard of Scram News but I don't post or read anything nor give credence to sites/forums etc. that I know nothing about. The fat man in a chair/St Petersburg bot syndrome.

I am not saying the story is misinformation but I am interested if Help For Heroes refuses to take such a large sum of money.

I would be very surprised if they refused a sizeable donation from the British public.
Am not fussed about Bongs ? just a glass of Bolly will do nicely, and better the money goes to such a good charity.

Roger McGough sums up my feelings perfectly:

When Big Ben bongs
And some sing songs
I’m staying in.

I leave the cheers
To the Brexiteers
I’m staying in.

What’s done is done
So have your fun
But I wish we were staying in.

Lack of preparation and forethought is Brexit in a nutshell.

Meanwhile a large group of MEP's were photographed with a sign saying "We'll leave the light on for you" in reply to Alan Smyth's speech telling them Scotland didn't want to leave. There have been numerous comments from representatives of the remaining 27 countries saying how much they love Scotland and look forward to our return and that they too will "leave the light on"

We WILL be back !

Oh I like Roger McGough’s poem

POGS; this is from the BBC2013
' Help for Heroes has announced it will not accept donations from the far-right English Defence League.
EDL leader Tommy Robinson started fundraising after the murder of soldier Lee Rigby in Woolwich on Wednesday.
But a Help for Heroes spokesman said a fundraising web page set up by Mr Robinson would be closed, and no EDL donations would be accepted.
The charity said it does not accept donations from any political party.
The charity spokesman added: "He's the only one that's come to our attention but tonight we'll be doing a cross-count to make sure that anyone else that's saying they're EDL will not be allowed to fundraise for us.
"It's the same for any political party, we don't allow political fundraising. As a charity, we're non-political."'
...as I pointed out I had googled the information for verification but the SCRAM article was the easiest one to post. I hope you find this information satisfactory.

I expect all you lovely people will be buying one of these (not available till February 10th).
?

vegansrock Wed 29-Jan-20 07:51:00

Talk about tacky. It’s not even grammatically correct.

Sparkling Wed 29-Jan-20 08:04:35

But it's true. If it helps a charity why not.. I never thought the day would come, so I am grateful to Boris. There will be things that he does I don't agree with, that is true of anyone. But well done Boris, good bye Bercow. Whoever votes after Boris. We will still be out, that is what matters. Let the bells ring.

Sparkling Wed 29-Jan-20 08:05:32

Prescriptive text.. Whoever comes after Boris, not votes.

growstuff Wed 29-Jan-20 10:53:07

I really wouldn't ever have believed how childish so many people are.

Labaik Wed 29-Jan-20 13:12:52

Anyone else sickened by the way people refer to Johnson as if he were a personal friend [I mean, as if...….]?

suziewoozie Wed 29-Jan-20 13:20:16

I am Labaik.

JenniferEccles Wed 29-Jan-20 13:50:20

I suppose you mean because he is often referred to as Boris?

How about all the idiotic calls some months back of. “Oh Jeremy “ ?

growstuff Wed 29-Jan-20 13:51:22

Labaik I'm just relieved he isn't.

growstuff Wed 29-Jan-20 13:51:58

Whataboutery at its finest! grin

Ginny42 Wed 29-Jan-20 13:58:40

I'm with Roger McGough. It will quietly pass me by.
I cannot celebrate a worsening of conditions for my family. We will just have to cope as best we can.

Johnson wanted to go down in history as the man who signed the documents. Now he's featured on a tea towel. Classy eh? I truly wouldn't have one given to me.

He's got a problem now with the rash decision over Huawei and MPs possibly voting against the whip, including IDS apparently.

suziewoozie Wed 29-Jan-20 14:00:01

Actually JE I believe it was Oh Jeremy Corbyn. Facts eh?

Labaik Wed 29-Jan-20 14:29:02

I think there was a survey done recently that found that many people regard Johnson as some sort of personal friend. Apologies in advance for not finding it, copying/pasting it and putting all the commas/italics etc in the right place.
