Borrowed from a Friend on FB. Just to make people clear of what, as a nation, we have voted for:

In his first four days as Prime Monster of the United Kingdom Boris Johnson has:

Cut the disability benefits of 650,000 vulnerable humans.

Rolled back on plans to address the climate change emergency.

Banned any boycott of Israel and supported their renewed offensive against the unarmed civilians of Gaza.

Removed child refugee legal protections.

Rolled back his pledge to increase nurses for the NHS.

Told us that the NHS is no longer protected from a trade deal with the US.

Told us that future deals will be conducted in secret.

Blocked anyone without photo ID from voting in future elections.

Drafted new constituency boundaries to keep the Tories in power indefinitely.

Dismissed renewed calls for a second Scottish independence referendum causing further disharmony.

Stated that workers rights and Trade Unions are under threat.

Rolled back pledge to increase the national living wage.

Announced an increase in MP’s wages to £82k a year

Scrapped EU directives on holiday pay, sick leave and working hours.

Stated that Brexit is happening by the the 31st of January with the worst no-deal scenario yet.

For anyone looking for sources (thanks Katie Round):

The Final boundary changes were announced in 2018 by the boundaries commission.

MaizieD Tue 24-Dec-19 16:04:18

the economy would nosedive.

It's already nosedived. Last quarter's growth figures the lowest for a decade. Economy is highly dependent on consumer spending and with personal debt at the highest levels ever it doesn't look good for the future.

If Johnson takes us out of the EU with no deal, which he's threatening again now he has complete control of Parliament it's likely to be zero growth for the next few quarters... And complete chaos over trade deals.

I don't think that people have any notion of the implications of Brexit...

Dinahmo Tue 24-Dec-19 16:15:14

MaizieD Admitting one is wrong is one of the most difficult things to do so Leavers will never do it, unless the country falls to pieces, in which case they'll blame the Remainers. They constantly accuse the Labour voters of being Momentum/Corbyn supporters who are also Marxists/Leninists/Stalinists or any other disparaging names that they can of. However, if they read lefty posts on here properly, they would see that whilst several people support many of Corbyn's policies, most lefties are critical of the LP. This of course, is in contrast to the right wing posters who can find nothing wrong with Johnson.

Jane10 Tue 24-Dec-19 16:34:20

I'm not a right wing poster. I voted LibDem tactically to keep SNP out in our constituency. It's too easy to just assume there's only left or right wing posters on GN as it is in the entire electorate there are many other points of view. GN represents a whole spectrum of political opinion.

Davidhs, don't they just! Links may not work because I copied and pasted from a friend.

MerylStreep, if THAT is what you take from this, I pity you. Try having some compassion and READING comments on here from people like MadeInYorkshire. These things affect real people.

OldWoman70, depends what I see online. It isn't anti Boris stuff anymore, is it? They are our government, and if we are continuing to pretend we're in a democracy, I think it's allowable to point out how the things they do affect the vulnerable in our country.

No problem. I was bored and am always keen to present people with facts, even if they choose to ignore them.

If people choose to dismiss dishonesty, it says a lot about them. Unfortunately, there's not a lot anybody else can do, apart from continuing to try and ensure facts aren't hidden and smiling sweetly grin.

Genuine questions that have been asked of disabled people in their assessments by people who are allegedly Health Professionals and are paid bonuses to remove the remove the benefit, so do it any way they can ....

"Why hasn't your leg grown back yet?"

"When did your Cerebral Palsy begin?"

"When did you catch Down's Syndrome?"

A claimant who was suicidal was asked: “And why didn’t you succeed? Why did you fail?”

No fairy tales here unfortunately sad

If you are able to put a pen in a top pocket, you are able to work ....

This is only the start, nothing will come of his promises, he is in power now and he will u turn. It is a sorry state of affairs that we will now have to wait 5 years before we can once again try to get rid of this evil, yes evil, government. One that punishes the most vulnerable in society. Yes its Christmas and shame on the GN who are not thinking of them at this time of year and trying to be dismissive.

GagaJo Tue 24-Dec-19 20:53:05

its Christmas and shame on the GN who are not thinking of them at this time of year and trying to be dismissive.

Exactly. My thoughts are with children living in B&Bs because they're otherwise homeless, with families needing to use foodbanks, with people waiting over a month for money from Universal Credit, with the disabled whose care allowance has been cancelled/cut.

Barmeyoldbat Tue 24-Dec-19 21:29:02

Thanks for supporting my post Gagajo.

Septimia Tue 24-Dec-19 21:33:12

How many of the people commenting on here have actually done anything to help those worse off than themselves this Christmas, rather than just complaining?

Jane10 Tue 24-Dec-19 21:36:04

I feel sorry for you as you blindly miss the points made by thinking GNers. Life is not as black and white as you persistently see it.

Barmeyoldbat Tue 24-Dec-19 21:36:18

Septima, I have been working in a food right up to today despite having a chest infection.

Barmeyoldbat Tue 24-Dec-19 21:44:25

Sorry Jane10 but what point are you making.

GagaJo Tue 24-Dec-19 22:02:55

Given that I still work as a teacher in a state school and didn't finish until Friday, nothing practical. However, on average, I spend between £5 and £10 a week for food for the local foodbank and donate either money (I don't need nagging about what they may do with it, mind your own business) or food/drink to rough sleepers weekly.

Daughter has also donated toys to our local Refugee Organisation and also to our local Children's Society charity shop in time for Christmas.

In the past, we have worked for a local charity to serve and feed the homeless on Christmas Day, but won't for a while now because GC is very young.

I think you assume, Septimia that people who SAY they care just pay lip service. For socialists that isn't the case. We try to do our bit. Hard when I'm working a 60 hour week unfortunately. But given that the government is set on making life much harder for the poor/needy, those of us that do care have to try to do a little to fill the gap.

Chewbacca Tue 24-Dec-19 22:15:10

Do you think it's only people who voted for Corbyn who have a social conscience GagaJo? Do you not think that those who voted for any of the other parties may also have regularly donated time, money, toys and food to charities, helped in food banks and the homeless soup kitchens. In my area, a rather affluent area in the NW think footballer belt that is strongly Conservative, there have been endless posts on our local Facebook page about collecting sleeping bags, toys, food, clothing, toiletries and sweets and chocolates for the homeless, refugees and women's refuges. They've been inundated with offers of help and items donated; far more than ever expected.

Charity doesn't necessarily wear a coloured rosette depicting it's political allegiance.

quizqueen Tue 24-Dec-19 22:24:50

Perhaps the affairs of the UK should be decided by the British people who actually chose to live here.

GagaJo Tue 24-Dec-19 22:24:55

I'm really glad to hear it Chewbacca.

My previous post was solely in response to Septimia comment implying that we were just keyboard warriors, not actually DOING anything to help the vulnerable and needy.

Smileless2012 Tue 24-Dec-19 22:32:51

Can you substantiate the questions you posted that have been asked of claimants for disability benefits MadeInYorkshire?

Unless you can, I don't believe you.

Urmstongran Tue 24-Dec-19 22:50:08

Happy Christmas everyone! Nice to see you back MaizieD
?

Barmeyoldbat Tue 24-Dec-19 22:52:46

Smileless let me first ak you have YOU ever had to do with making a disability claim for either for yourself or some else Have you ever had to appeal or attend a Tribunal?

To claim you fill out about a 12 page form and then on interview they will try to catch you out that you are lying. If you do some research yourself about PIP and the process, you might as I was able to do, get into an official site that gives information on how to conduct the interview. They stress that it must be done with respect and allow the claimant time to answer. It also states that they must ask in depth questions to find out if the any of the information is exaggerated, hence these questions. Some of the examples given might well be untrue but believe me they are in that format of stupidity and this I can tell you from experience but I am to tired to think of any at the moment.

Doodledog Tue 24-Dec-19 22:54:06

Charity doesn't necessarily wear a coloured rosette depicting it's political allegiance.

This is true, or should be, but I have found a horrible trend on my local FB page (which can be really toxic, but still. . .) of people judging who is 'deserving' of charity. A couple of examples for the festive season:
A poster had bought coffee and a bacon roll for a homeless person in our small town. She took a photo of him (I can't do italics, but would like to emphasis this - took an actual photo) and put it on FB, with a virtue-signalling post about her generosity, which garnered a lot of 'UR marvellous, Hon' posts in reply. When it was pointed out that this was a bit sanctimonious of her, someone posted that the homeless guy had a criminal record, and the tide turned to how 'this was typical of the homeless' and 'people should save their money, as giving to the homeless would result in their spending it on drugs'.

Another candidate for sainthood posted that she had some second-hand toys that her children had outgrown, and she wanted them to go to a really needy family who might not otherwise get presents. Someone posted to ask for them for his daughters, and one reply was 'You are buying your house, so can afford to buy presents'. The OP came back with something to the effect that she wanted only really needy people to reply. Okaaay. So not only are you skint, but your children also have to suffer the humiliation of having their mum admit this on social media on a very public page that most people in this town read. That'll go down well at school, won't it? Merry Christmas, used toy-giver.

It's disturbing and worrying that both these threads have appeared since the election, and very few people have posted in disgust. Those who did were told that they were uncharitable, and must want to see the homeless starve, or reminded of the generosity of the 'givers' on the threads. The point was missed, quite spectacularly.

This has nothing to do with the political allegiance of anyone, but it certainly flies in the face of real charity, which should be done from the heart without the need to let everyone know about your generosity, which in the cases I quoted amounted to a fiver's worth of food, and a few second hand toys.

The idea of a deserving and undeserving poor underpinned the workhouse system, and that of the parish relief that preceded it, and has no place in the fifth richest country in the world. Is this really what people would like to see return?
