A thorough investigation of 8 newspapers journalism regarding Jeremy Corbyn representation in the British Press by LSE.
www.lse.ac.uk/media-and-communications/assets/documents/research/projects/corbyn/Cobyn-Report.pdf
I know Labour lost out Tories won. We will soon have a new Labour Leader

But should press have so much power to influence shouldn't they be curbed investigated?

And no mention of the countrywide strikes demonstrations in France or very little coverage. If it wasn't for videos on social media you wouldn't know what's happening in France.

Why isn't all this reported here?

NotSpaghetti Mon 27-Jan-20 09:55:26

Because no one is bothered enough about truth, maybe?

Greeneyedgirl Mon 27-Jan-20 10:09:22

I try and access world news these days because of this kind of reporting, and for a wider picture of what is happening.
It is well known that the press influence elections, just look how party leaders have sucked up to the Sun.
Our Press is infamous abroad, and this report just shows the British Press for what it is.
Thanks for bringing this to our attention Grany.

lemongrove Mon 27-Jan-20 10:21:29

Grany you would do better to concentrate on the real reasons that Corbyn lost the GE so badly for Labour.
Voters don’t want either him or his brand of old fashioned socialism. If R Long Bailey is a mirror image of him that she will be also roundly defeated at the next GE in five years.
Many LP members still don’t get it.

Anniebach Mon 27-Jan-20 10:27:42

Labour lost the election because of ‘The Sun’

McClusky said yesterday labour lost the election because of
Brexit.

Blinko Mon 27-Jan-20 10:32:28

Thank you for sharing this, Grany. It is a thorough piece on the power of the press systematically to present a distorted picture. The press in this country resents and fights back when this power is brought into question or disrepute.

Look at Levinson. How many of those recommendations have actually been implemented?

It is a national disgrace. I am not at all sure what can be done to educate us all on just how sceptical we need to be when reading anything delivered by the British press.

For one thing, shouldn't critical appraisal of newspaper articles be included somewhere in the school curriculum.

Grany Mon 27-Jan-20 11:38:30

Lemon Labour's polices are transformative not old fashioned. Labour polices are regarded mainstream in Scandinavian countries they are doing very well. The Green Industrial Revolution to tackle climate change. What is Johnson doing about this? Lots of young joined Labour because of Jeremy Corbyn thousands attended the rallies up and down the country.

Though the power the press have to influence is well known.
And Brexit at this time played a part too, people believing Johnson ha. There was postal vote fraud not surprised.

I am just showing the corruption in our press MSM

And what about the selling off of our NHS Branson paid no tax on 2 billion NHS deals

Johnson claims privatisation in the NHS isn’t happening but the Tories have opened the door for profiteers to rip us all off.

This outsourcing has to end — the NHS should begin the process of in-sourcing these services instead

Richard Branson's Virgin Healthcare has paid no tax on £2billion NHS deals.

Very well said Blinko And For one thing, shouldn't critical appraisal of newspaper articles be included somewhere in the school curriculum Agree.

And Well Said Greeneyedgirl

paddyanne Mon 27-Jan-20 12:13:58

Nothing on MSM about Emily Thornberry at hustings saying "I HATE THE SNP IHATE THE SNP they are tories wrapped as nationalists" Hmmm Tories ? So thats why the Labour party were aping SNP policies at the election? Policies already in place in Scotland .Does she hate the SNP party? The SNP membership (over 150 thousand) or the people who voted for SNP 8o% of Scottish seats .Or is it sour grapes that SNP have managed to unseat labour in an area they felt they were entitled to?
Maybe IF labour had opposed the tories instead of enabling them by abstaining for 10 years they could have clawed back some support north AND south of the border .We'll never know but Ms Thornberry's bile and obvious hatred from her expression will have alienated people who were lending their vote to SNP ,in fact I know a few who now say they will never vote labour again .

Iwastoldtheredbecake Mon 27-Jan-20 12:19:09

I’m fed up with reading Newspaper Headlines that say that the British people are ‘Outraged’ , or no one has ever asked me if I’m outraged or not.

About anything.

Although I’m often fed up.

Iwastoldtheredbecake Mon 27-Jan-20 12:19:40

Oops an ‘or’ slipped in there unnoticed.

growstuff Mon 27-Jan-20 12:22:35

The OP wasn't just about Corbyn. It was about media bias in general - or, rather, what it omits (which comes down to the same thing). For example, I have read almost nothing in the British press about Modi and Kashmir, although the press in other countries has loads. There has been infinitely more coverage about a couple of minor royals.

growstuff Mon 27-Jan-20 12:24:45

McCluskey is a dinosaur Anniebach. I really can't take anything he says very seriously.

MaizieD Mon 27-Jan-20 12:44:15

It's to be hoped that McCluskey's members don't take him seriously, either. Thank goodness the unions no longer have a block vote in leadership elections...

sarahellenwhitney Mon 27-Jan-20 13:04:01

Lemongrove
Spot on.

Urmstongran Mon 27-Jan-20 13:21:39

Nothing on MSM about Emily Thornberry at hustings saying "I HATE THE SNP IHATE THE SNP they are tories wrapped as nationalists"

Actually yes there is paddyanne I’ve just seen it reported in the Mail on Line.

MerylStreep Mon 27-Jan-20 13:40:54

Grany
This is maybe an explanation why. It is also written by Professor Charlie Beckett of the LSE.
firstly if you are a self avowed anti-establishment, anti-capitalist party with the most left-wing program seen for generations with media policies that threaten the press with constraints, what do you expect
Don't forget press censorship can work both ways.

Grany Mon 27-Jan-20 14:00:11

Yes well the press need to be constrained Levinson no recommendations been implemented.

My choice would not be for Emily Thornberry she would be ending her political career by how she was speaking.

Massive protests everywhere, Macron has capitulated on Pensions, but this has turned into a REVOLUTION against the new aristocracy - the billionaires impovishering the French

Sharpen the guillotines !
Vive la revolution

Johnson doesn't want UK citizens to see this in case you get any ideas massive crowds out on the streets of #France against #Austerity

"Marches of Light" in every of the 10-15 largest cities of France (video #Lyon) yet @BBCNews blackout #r4today cover up

quizqueen Mon 27-Jan-20 14:09:36

paddyanne, maybe Emily Thornberry hates the SNP voters because she thinks they all have white vans!

lemongrove Mon 27-Jan-20 14:13:55

Grany.....the French are always revolting ?
They man the barricades at the slightest provocation, it isn’t anything new, nor is their government giving in to demands, they always do that too. There will be no revolution, either there or here ( sorry if that disappoints.)

Grany Mon 27-Jan-20 14:57:43

Well good for the French standing up to their government against austerity.

A Revolution has got to start somehow

I suppose most English people haven't a clue what's happening in France, happened.

varian Mon 27-Jan-20 15:53:27

80% of newspaper readers read newspapers owned by foreign millionaires or tax exiles who belong to that tiny minority who will profit from brexit - which they persuaded their readers to vote for.

In time these readers may realise that they were misled because brexit will make them poorer but by the time they see what was always obvious to those who voted Remain it will be far too late to change anything.

The unscrupulous enemies of the UK have won and the rest of us have lost big time.

M0nica Mon 27-Jan-20 17:23:39

Surveys of voters after the election showed that they found the manifesto far too long and promising far too much and they feared it would cause another financial crisi. They also did not like or trust Jeremy Corbyn.

It is worth remembering that Boris Johnson had an equally bad press during the leadership election and during December's election. He was openly and frequently called a liar, a man who had cheated wives and employers and generally as crooked as a corkscrew.

So there wasn't much to choose between the press either leader got.

It is just they decided that a noisy bombastic lying leader was better than creeping disloyal antisemitic one.

MaizieD Mon 27-Jan-20 17:44:46

It is worth remembering that Boris Johnson had an equally bad press during the leadership election and during December's election.

Not in the Daily Telegraph, the Daily Mail, the Express, the Times, the Mail on Sunday or the Sunday Times.

Guardian, Independent & Observer hardly register as far as circulation goes.

M0nica Mon 27-Jan-20 17:48:58

Well, all I can say is that we cannot read the same pages in those papers. T he message I got loud and clear about him was just that - and online as well.

Perhaps as I am not committed to either party, my view was less tinged by party partisanship.

GagaJo Mon 27-Jan-20 17:53:48

This report says exactly what a Radio 4 programme said, about a week after the election.

The British MSM is little more than the British version of the National Enquirer. Totally fake news.

Read it if you will. Or Viz or some other comic.
