Hubby and I have just got back from Parliament Square celebrations (stayed longer than planned as the atmosphere was electric!) - We all made so many new friends (both leavers and remainers) - Hellllllo to the "Backing Singers"! grin And Tenby Angels Helllooo - Hopefully we will see some new members joining GN. (I've warned them about the welcoming committee, don't worry). wink
There is definitely a wonderfully, optimistic buzz in the UK!
I love this British wave of positivity.
Reminds me of the Berlin Wall coming down.

I don’t think anyone is crowing about anything. I know leavers who are completely horrified by what appears to have been unleashed. They didn’t like the EU - they like the populist rising even less.

That is the most worrying thing.

Although I see today that Johnson is going to say he wants freedom to relax employment rights & food and environmental standards. And yesterday it looks as if Gibraltar is going to cause problems. Irish peace is fragile.

I have genuine concern about all the above. That’s not crowing.

I also think it is really important that everyone calls out racism - before it becomes normal.

Personally I’m quietly happy today. Somehow it seems like Boxing Day IYKWIM? Still Christmas but without the pressure. Just a nice day to enjoy. I’m off out now to spend time with the grandchildren.

Enjoy the day everyone. However you voted. x

It's true to say that any far right activists would definitely have voted leave. But more than half the voters in the country voted leave and they all had their own reasons. Remainers are very keen to jump on these images and crow about them representing the typical leave voter, ignorant and foul mouthed. It makes them feel better about losing, superior, more intelligent and more civilised.

Nezumi65 Sun 02-Feb-20 11:26:25

Sorry shouting about the third reich, although they probably equated that with the EU hmm

It was horrible, ignorant stuff.

Nezumi65 Sun 02-Feb-20 11:24:53

Oh god don’t ask people to post the obscenities - I saw loads yesterday & have tried not to post them (I think they are exploitive). I did post two links (1) because I thought it was sort of funny in a what the? way (people in a pub swearing at the EU) & (2) a clip from Irish TV where the yobs had approached the cameras rather than the other way round.

But people stamping on EU flags, people shouting about the EU reich, people shouting at an Italian journalist, people pouring beer on an EU flag. And so on and so forth. It was shameful behaviour.

vegansrock Sun 02-Feb-20 11:24:46

If you want to defend such obscenities just by whataboutery it says quite a lot.

vegansrock Sun 02-Feb-20 11:23:46

I don't think there have been any similar obscenities directed to anyone on here. If there had been they would be removed.

vegansrock Sun 02-Feb-20 11:22:23

As said before - click on the link to the Independent article on page 1 of this thread if you want to see pictures from the night. Plus read the words of the song which I wont repeat here.

Firecracker123 Sun 02-Feb-20 11:17:10

Vegansrock if there where so many Nazi saluting thugs at Parliament Square why haven't you posted pictures. Also the songs with obscenities at the Farage Brexit rally what exactly were they singing, nothing more than the obscenities some Remainers have expressed in the last few years on GN I expect. I personally never swear.

Callistemon Sun 02-Feb-20 11:10:47

Calendargirl, yes I saw your post and should have referenced it because that is what made me take another look.

Surely no-one has the right to take that photo and link it to the groups suggested, especiallg Nazi groups.

Nezumi65 Sun 02-Feb-20 11:04:31

If that is a hate crime (there are strict definitions as to what is chargeable as a crime and what can just be noted) then the author of that note needs to be charged.

SirChenjin Sun 02-Feb-20 11:04:13

shock Nandalot. Absolutely disgusting, filthy, racist behaviour - it’s stomach turning.

Greymar Sun 02-Feb-20 11:03:16

Why doesn't HQ just shut dowm this destructive and unpleasant nonsense?

Shelmiss Sun 02-Feb-20 11:01:39

But you do of course?

No aprilrose I’ve got absolutely no idea either! But I’m not a parrot who will just repeat what I’ve heard ad infinitum without understanding what it actually means.

Nezumi65 Sun 02-Feb-20 11:01:28

The OP is just stirring

Nandalot Sun 02-Feb-20 11:01:20

What about this poster from a block of Norwich flats?
www.theguardian.com/politics/2020/feb/01/police-called-in-after-poster-tells-residents-of-flats-to-speak-english?utm_term=RWRpdG9yaWFsX0d1YXJkaWFuVG9kYXlVS19XZWVrZW5kLTIwMDIwMg%3D%3D&utm_source=esp&utm_medium=Email&CMP=GTUK_email&utm_campaign=GuardianTodayUK
Brexit seems to have legitimised racism for some people. I am glad the police are dealing with it

GrandmaMoira Sun 02-Feb-20 10:56:48

I don't know how the OP can say there is a spirit of optimism in the country. There is a great deal of anger and bitterness in this divided country.

Calendargirl Sun 02-Feb-20 10:56:25

Yes Callistemon that was what I commented on a few posts ago. I saw that chap on the news, he was in a pub either in Boston or a village nearby. It was used as an example of a big majority ‘leave’ area certainly, but no he didn’t fit the profile that was suggested.

vegansrock Sun 02-Feb-20 10:54:34

Perhaps if you clicked on the link to the Independent article I posted earlier Calistemon you would see more pictures and read about the behaviour at Parliament Square. If you want to see pictures of the nazi saluting shirtless ones theres plenty of them. You seem to be trying to accuse people of racism or some sort of illegality in order further your own agenda but it doesn't detract from the facts.

vegansrock Sun 02-Feb-20 10:49:53

Since when did two wrongs make a right? The fact that you don't distance yourself from the sheer xenophobic, obscene and intimidating behaviour shown by some speaks volumes.

Callistemon Sun 02-Feb-20 10:49:44

The man in the photo looks as if he is in a pub celebrating quietly, probably the day after the referendum.
I wonder if he knows his photo is being used as typical of a tattooed, bald, shirtless, foul mouthed lout giving Nazi salutes?

I may not agree with him but linking his photo to those thugs you allege were in Parliament Square is treading on dangerous ground.

Perhaps you should be careful what you post, vegansrock.

aprilrose Sun 02-Feb-20 10:32:02

You can celebrate a win but should you treat those who have lost with obscenities and threats?

What about all the obsenities, threats, assaults and insults that remain activists have been slinging at leavers f or three years or more now? They dont count I suppose?

We could make exchanges like this forever.

I often think that if those ardent remainers had just put a sock in their megaphones ( that does not mean you are not allowed to voice your opinion, it means you accept the decision of democracy and move democratically to make any changes, not hijack it and insult others), then maybe this would not have continued in the vein it has.

As for those who oft demand that those like myself explain beyond " the sound bite" what I mean. Look to yourselves. Have you ever explained beyond the soundbite of why you feel so European? What is that exactly? Where is that country? Where is that unified culture? Which bit of Europe are we talking about there? Or even the idea that we have all benefitted from being in the EU. That the EU is the sunny uplands- have you ever explained that beyond the sound bite?

I know why I voted to leave the EU. The research shows most of us did. We also know what we mean by taking back control ..... but the thing is, most of us just want a quiet life and are sick of the click baiting by remain activists who just want to make an argument for the sake of one.

If I offered remainers an olive branch here, they would try and use it to beat me over the head and across my back. Thats why I for one will not engage beyond the "soundbite" now.

vegansrock Sun 02-Feb-20 10:28:38

Does tennis player when winning Wimbledon tell his/her opponnent to "f***ng do one"?

vegansrock Sun 02-Feb-20 10:22:30

You can celebrate a win but should you treat those who have lost with obscenities and threats?

aprilrose Sun 02-Feb-20 10:21:31

When asked - what are you celebrating, they reply - we’ve taken back control. They are then asked - you’ve taken back control of what, they reply - of our country. They are then asked - what does that actually mean and there is a lot of umming and ahhing - and they have no bloody idea!!

But you do of course?
