Hubby and I have just got back from Parliament Square celebrations (stayed longer than planned as the atmosphere was electric!) - We all made so many new friends (both leavers and remainers) - Hellllllo to the "Backing Singers"! grin And Tenby Angels Helllooo - Hopefully we will see some new members joining GN. (I've warned them about the welcoming committee, don't worry). wink
There is definitely a wonderfully, optimistic buzz in the UK!
I love this British wave of positivity.
Reminds me of the Berlin Wall coming down.

april Perhaps we could continue with the church calendar and have ‘the first Sunday after Independence Day’ etc ?
Candlemass today, and hope the weather prediction is spot on.

Kandinsky well said, and had a laugh reading it.??

The rise of any extremism, right or left, is a worry. All of us would be happier in a world where we occupy a centre ground but human nature dictates differently. I would say that the constant arguing on Social media, including here, is just feeding it.

I’ve very much enjoyed the clips online which show people being interviewed whilst celebrating, who have absolutely NO IDEA about what they are actually celebrating.

When asked - what are you celebrating, they reply - we’ve taken back control. They are then asked - you’ve taken back control of what, they reply - of our country. They are then asked - what does that actually mean and there is a lot of umming and ahhing - and they have no bloody idea!!

It would be very funny, only....it isn’t. ?‍♀️

I don't see this as positive. And I was always taught that intelligent, well mannered people did not celebrate and crow when they won a victory

Oh so you are not allowed to punch the air when you win the race? Tell that to the athletes then. You are not allowed to run and jump together with your team mates when you score the winning goal? Tell that to the footballers and the rugby players then.

You dont stand on the top space in the podium and pop the champaigne cork when you win the grand prix? tell that to the racing drivers.

You dont kiss the cup and raise it in the air at Wimbledon when you win the finals . Tell that to tennis players.

Winners are always allowed their celebration.

I’m a bit late coming to this thread, but in all fairness, the picture you posted showed a chap who wasn’t shirtless, and he wasn’t bald. He looks to have some tattoos, and has a beer glass in his hand, but you can’t tell if he is saying anything, and I don’t think he was at Parliament Square.

If those celebrating Brexit don't realise the threat from the far right, and how they have legitimised views which are totally abhorrent to most people, they are either closing their eyes, or in some way complicit with those views. The far right is on the rise.
I don't see this as positive. And I was always taught that intelligent, well mannered people did not celebrate and crow when they won a victory, but were gracious and modest. I suppose all these posts just illustrate that those who voted to leave have none of those qualities.

" When candlemass be clear and bright , winter takes a second flight"

Today, as well as being the second day of independance is also Candlemass. Its a bit dull and damp here and not at all clear. So the winter will not take a second flight and we are over the worst I think. Now let us also be over the worst of the rejoiners too. Look forward to the better times to come.

Candlemass has always been one of those weather verses I have always known to work by the way.

I'm not quite sure what this thread is about, Brexit celebrations, epilepsy or homelessness.
Yes, it does seem as though 'rent-a-mob' was out in full force on Friday night, but these types often take over big gatherings because they make the most noise.
It seems they were far right activists who wanted to make an impact.
Bad language and dire dress code essential!
I seem to remember last year extremely annoying pro-EU demonstrators in Parliament Square causing mayhem for several weeks.
There are undesirables on both sides.

vegansrock Sun 02-Feb-20 09:48:33

None of the triumphalists on here are condemning the thugs - they are just a minority "celebrating".

vegansrock Sun 02-Feb-20 09:47:21

One of the main songs on the Farage platform contained many obscenities which I wont repeat- wasn't just a minority thing.

vegansrock Sun 02-Feb-20 09:45:34

We all know the alt right is a danger all over the world. Maybe you and the Brexit supporters should disassociate yourselves from the ones who make the headlines then. Funny no-one seems to. They are not just "idiots" they are dangerous idiots.

SirChenjin Sun 02-Feb-20 09:43:16

I didn’t know this was a clinical setting, don’t be silly!

It’s not Joelsnan it’s GN - don’t be silly! Those of us who work in the NHS are aware of appropriate terminology and use it automatically in all settings, including online forums.

Firecracker123 Sun 02-Feb-20 09:43:08

Well said Kandinsky ?

Kandinsky Sun 02-Feb-20 09:40:31

Maybe you should stop focusing on that tiny minority - the vast vast majority of leave voters are just ordinary people, but it suits your agenda to focus on the idiots.
Plenty of idiots on the remain side as you well know.
And if you love the EU so much, you’ll know only too well that many EU countries have a very strong Nazi movements. Funny how that always gets overlooked.

vegansrock Sun 02-Feb-20 09:28:58

But if celebrations include tell anyone who doesn’t agree to “f***ng do one” , nazi salutes and charmingly one poster “ if you love the EU so much then fuck off back to Africer “( sic) then 8 think we have aright to be “ annoyed” , or rather horrified and disgusted.

varian Sun 02-Feb-20 09:28:55

How long will it take for some people to realise we ALL lost?

Kandinsky Sun 02-Feb-20 09:22:29

Why do remainers get so annoyed when leavers celebrate leaving the EU?
Some of them have been waiting years for this moment, of course they’re going to celebrate! Why shouldn’t they?
And all this ‘we’re not going away, we’re going to hold you to account’ crap, just makes these remainers sound so bitter & twisted I actually feel sorry for them. Have they really got nothing else to worry about?
And who are they going to keep reminding of their terrible decision?
Anonymous posters on the internet who honestly couldn’t give a toss. grin

You lost. For your own sanity, please get over it.

Firecracker123 Sun 02-Feb-20 09:17:41

I see my post fell on deaf ears, carry on with the insults then who cares, we've left so all your ranting and raving won't make any difference.

I'm proud that I voted leave and proud to be English. ??

NotSpaghetti Sun 02-Feb-20 09:05:59

I just cannot comprehend how the OP can say that leaving the EU reminds me of the Berlin Wall coming down. As Callistemon said, it feels distinctly like a wall going UP.

I just feel tremendous sadness and loss.

And I hope we won't have Independence Day plus two, three, four threads...
I know I can just skip on by (and will on future if they pop up).

Also, I think those of us who are feeling pretty "down" about leaving the EU are not all pessimists as ananimous thinks. If anything, I'm a realist, often an optimist and comfortable with that. Some people who voted remain are definitely optimists (my daughter is one). These facts don't mean you stop thinking though! If you are an optimist but accidentally chop of your arm with a chain saw and it can't be sewn back on you would be very odd to think, "great, I can have a shiny new prosthetic arm", you will grieve the loss of the arm you once had. This doesn't mean you are a pessimist! Just think about it!

Elegran Sun 02-Feb-20 09:00:25

I am waiting a while before celebrating or despairing. On 31st Jan we began the biggest change in policy this country has faced for decades. It will takes months for the snagging to be accomplished and years for the ultimate evidence of the direction the country's fortunes and ethos will take.

The pound was bound to rise - it goes up and down like a tart's drawers on the least provocation. The test is whether it stays up.

As the actress said to the bishop.

Greymar Sun 02-Feb-20 08:56:47

Ah, OK thanks. I'm glad we have cleared that up. I'm off to refill my cafetiere.

dragonfly46 Sun 02-Feb-20 08:48:48

There is no point to this thread!
No doubt we will have another one on Friday entitled ‘A week after Independence Day’!
unanimous is just a windup merchant!

Greymar Sun 02-Feb-20 08:41:23

Good morning, may I ask what exactly is the point of this thread?

Nezumi65 Sun 02-Feb-20 08:37:20

If it was genuine then I apologise joelsnan - I should have only responded to ‘still no meds problems’ anamanious who was clearly shit stirring.

No I won’t shut up about the issues around medication or things like cancer treatment isotopes. The government doesn’t even seem to understand the issues. If I had any confidence that they are capable to negotiating a deal in 11 months then maybe I would feel more confident. No deal would be a disaster and would lead to deaths.

And I won’t shut up about the rise of the far right either. Unfortunately there seems to have been a lot of unpleasant racist and xenophobic incidents in London associated with Brexit celebrations - even if the media were out looking for them - they didn’t have to look very far.

MaizieD Sun 02-Feb-20 08:33:19

I'm fed up off all the negative posts and insults from the Remainers...

Well, that's tough for you isn't it.

'Leaving' doesn't alter a thing. You'd love it if we'd all shut up so that you don't have to face up to the consequences of your choice. But some of us will be there to keep reminding you of them; however much you would prefer not to know.
