This 'Jimmy Cranky ' trope is so offensive and blatantly sexist. Women in the public eye suffer this kind of attack and worse constantly. It is a way of silencing women in the public sphere. What is so demoralising is that on this site, used primarily by women, it is just the same. So much for the Sisterhood.

Call this thread went far far beyond was the dress appropriate or not and I think you know that. For me it was about some posters allocating a whole range of motives to her quite unreasonably , generalising about her character and suitability to be an MP and so on. There were a huge raft of thoroughly nasty sexist misogynistic and quite frankly stupid comments made. I don’t belong to the camp that thinks the dress was appropriate - but I put the wearing of it in its context( previous engagement, unexpectedly called to the House, in plaster upto her knee )and took into account previous ‘good behaviour’.

This lady is not a book, she's an MP who should adhere to standards of work dress. Then people would take her seriously and listen to what she says without all this distraction.

I don't feel distracted and take her message very seriously because she has serious things to say. I could care less what she wears. On the other hand I rarely take your post seriously Chestnut and can't even see you. Perhaps you have priorities I just don't share. You may not share mine or hers either put what either of us wear will make any difference to that.

NS is a politician. In fact First Minister for Scotland. She dresses smartly and appropriately for her position.

However, I do read what most posters have to say and think about their sensible and considered posts even if I don't always agree with them. It's usually good to listen to another view and perhaps re-evaluate.
