Does anyone know?

We are the United Kingdom. News from all of the united countries should be of interest to us all and should be equally reported on the national news. We need a new kind of reporting. England is the most populous country but we are all equal in importance surely. Time we spoke out about this.
After being ignored like the other small countries in the UK, Scotland is now getting airtime. This is new and I wonder why. Unfortunately, this is causing resentment but it could be a used positively as a precedent to demand more airtime for all.

Some people just like to snipe.

He is was following the “expert” Dominic Cummings initial edict to protect the economy are all costs. He is now more like Neville Chamberlain than Winston Churchill. He’s not as bad as Trump but that’s not hard.

Reading some posts on here it appears that a few GNers expect miracles!
The situation is fast moving and the government ( including Johnson!) are dealing with it well and with ‘humanity’.
To those posters saying all should be shut down and policed, it needs new laws to be passed to do quite a bit of that ( which no doubt will be done as soon as possible.) We are not China
( thank God.)

Greeneyedgirl Mon 23-Mar-20 13:21:13

I think China actually managed this epidemic quite well, and we did not heed their warnings.

They are now sending their experts to Italy.

We have been far too slow to react, as many many scientists and doctors have testified.

When this virus is eventually under control, which will not be for quite a while I suspect, I would think a public Enquiry will be called for.

Surely it is time to have a war time type coalition government now.

lemongrove Mon 23-Mar-20 13:28:27

Since this awful pandemic started in China ( the ghastly wildlife markets!) I would hope they did manage it well,
Until people there stop eating bats/ snakes etc (where the cross infection came from) there could be other terrible virus pandemics in the future.
Plus, China is not a democracy and people there can be ordered to do anything, at the drop of a hat.

Nicola Sturgeon spoke clearly and the message was appropriate to the rest of the United Kingdom. Wales has their own tv channel. Doesn’t it have news then about Wales in Welsh?

Brunette10 Mon 23-Mar-20 13:47:13

I'm Scottish but def not a Nicola Sturgeon fan at all however I think she has handled her reports very well over the last few days. Does not mince her words, very practical, down to earth in every day language so we ALL understand what is required of us. I was appalled to see that on Saturday evening some pubs in Scotland had remained open, I think this is absolutely dreadful and should have their licence taken away and never returned to them. They are putting lives at risk. She has made it very clear that she will take action for those who do not adhere to the advice given, I think she will.

Jabberwok Mon 23-Mar-20 14:03:31

I think we ALL understand what is expected of us, the problem is getting selfish morons to adhere to it!! If it puts a stop to those appalling wild life markets, yulin festival and other charming cultural (torturing animal )events that the Chinese are so keen on, then at least something good will have come out of this tragedy

Greeneyedgirl Mon 23-Mar-20 14:31:35

Gosh I know nothing of the animal torturing events, but this virus has made me seriously question my meat eating habits, and I don't eat much meat. Ethically why can it be OK to eat a cow or sheep, but not a bat, cat or dog I wonder.

Jabberwok Mon 23-Mar-20 14:39:27

Its not the eating of animals that is the issue but the care and respect shown to those animals during their lives. I find it hard to believe that anyone is unaware of the appalling cruelty to animals in the countries of the Far East, from dolphins in Japan to dogs, cats and many more besides in China! A quick look at Google will inform! Hopefully you have a strong stomach or hate animals!

Jabberwok Mon 23-Mar-20 14:40:37

...during their lives and at their demise.....

Whitewavemark2 Mon 23-Mar-20 14:42:16

I wish I hadn’t read the last couple of posts.

GrannyGravy13 Mon 23-Mar-20 14:43:17

I think the Coronavirus Bill is being debated in H of P today, hopefully it will pass unhindered.

Happy to be corrected, but once it is passed then the Government can initiate stricter lockdown procedures.

Greeneyedgirl Mon 23-Mar-20 14:46:37

I did not know of the specific animal torturing events that you mention Jabberwok but am not so naive that I don't realise that cruelty to animals happens all over the world, which is clearly abhorrent.

However I understood that in Chinese markets some animals which are kept in close, insanitary conditions, are sold for meat. This is how the current epidemic started isn't it?

Jabberwok Mon 23-Mar-20 15:16:50

Maybe! Its not jut the unsanitary conditions but the capture, and pitiless way these creatures such as highly endangered pandolins, for example are ruthlessly pursued and sold alive for meat. Google Yulin Dog Festival! this may give you an inkling of Chinese mentality towards helpless animals!

Pikachu Mon 23-Mar-20 15:16:54

I think Johnson is doing better than expected (not that that is saying very much) but at least his syntax and vocabulary is appropriate unlike that moron in the White House who cannot string a sentence together or master words of more than two syllables.

Did you hear he was suggesting they sterilise fact masks so they can be used again.

Pikachu Mon 23-Mar-20 15:20:16

Greeneyedgirl I think you should look into the particular kind of cruelty to dogs and cats, sold for meat, and the way they are killed. This goes beyond cruelty.

J52 Mon 23-Mar-20 15:20:30

I don’t think all the pubs in Scotland have refused to close!

Pikachu Mon 23-Mar-20 15:21:11

Yes, it’s only a handful who have not.

J52 Mon 23-Mar-20 15:26:21

Police Scotland have the powers to shut down licensed premises for 24 hrs, which they are doing for the rogues. After 24 hrs they can repeat the process.

Whitewavemark2 Mon 23-Mar-20 15:31:03

For those who are satisfied that Johnson is giving out clear and concise messages, I recommend you watch the Piers Morgan interview with Matthew Hancock. On Good Morning

Greymar Mon 23-Mar-20 15:32:03

Gosh, I never watch that programme but I caught it this morning. Fireworks!

Dinahmo Tue 24-Mar-20 20:19:04

Good article in the Guardian this evening by Marina Hyde - subject - Johnson and Churchill. Entitled Johnson's 'fight them on the beaches moment' true grit or more shifting sands?

Pikachu Wed 25-Mar-20 08:50:06

Whitewavemark2 John Crace on Matt Handcock

Very witty and perceptive.
