Keir Starmer .

Urmstongran Sat 04-Apr-20 15:15:18

Well said Annie!

Anniebach Sat 04-Apr-20 15:13:17

If titles don’t belong to the socialist party how come there are
socialists in the Lords !

trisher Sat 04-Apr-20 15:11:46

Isn't it funny how some are unable to look at a question objectively and assess the realities of the situation but prefer to make it a personal insult or introduce their own status as an answer.
Boris won the Northern seats purely on Brexit. Starmer is a passionate and long standing Remainer So strike one against him. He is a southerner, a Londoner to be exact-strike 2 against him He is a lawyer-strike 3. I'm not saying I think this, I am saying there are many who will. Still let us wait and see. Perhaps I am wrong and the North will welcome him with open arms

Callistemon Sat 04-Apr-20 15:11:19

I wouldn't have thought that any Labour leader would be popular north of the border, though, rather sad as many areas used to be Labour strongholds, resulting in Scottish PMs and Ministers to Westminster.
The rise of the SNP has ensured Tory victories in the UK.

Galaxy Sat 04-Apr-20 15:05:31

The mistake that many made in the last election was thinking facebook and twitter represented the electorate.

paddyanne Sat 04-Apr-20 15:00:28

Going by my FB page a lot of young people are not happy .SIR Keir Starmer !! Titles are something that dont belong in a socialist party ...its definately a throw back to tory light Tony Blair .My take on it is maybe he can be the opposition that been needed for years ,Labour has been a huge disappointment for many of their older voters.Thats one of the reasons they've been voting SNP here .

Mamie Sat 04-Apr-20 14:56:28

Such a shame only 35% of affiliated members bothered to vote. ?

GracesGranMK3 Sat 04-Apr-20 14:53:24

Just thinking about Keir Starmer's skill-set and I would love to be a fly on the wall when he attempts to cut through the waffle about testing etc., next week.

Whitewavemark2 Sat 04-Apr-20 14:53:08

grandad I would hope that the good will is with him. Pointless being in politics if you don’t win an election and division definitely won’t,

Grandad1943 Sat 04-Apr-20 14:51:20

I will Callistemon, I will. ?

Grandad1943 Sat 04-Apr-20 14:49:34

Whitewavemark2, Starmer can set out whatever he likes personally. It can be however selling those personal views to the rest of the Labour movement that can be the difficult bit, especially if they differ from what he has stated in his election campaign.

Whitewavemark2 Sat 04-Apr-20 14:48:31

Tory backbencher are shifting uncomfortably in their seats as they watch the consequence of their leaders decisions. The UKs upward curve has overtaken Italy”s.

Callistemon Sat 04-Apr-20 14:46:50

Lucky you, Grandad
Wave to the pier for me

Grandad1943 Sat 04-Apr-20 14:44:56

Callistemon I and my wife are about to go for our one allowed government daily walk along that nearby referred to Bristol channel coast.

However, it has been nice to get the old brain cells away from CoronaVirus and lockdown etc for an hour or so on here today.

I think we can all agree on that if nothing else.

Whitewavemark2 Sat 04-Apr-20 14:43:05

Starmer is setting out the priorities.

Callistemon Sat 04-Apr-20 14:42:53

Previous!!
I give in

I can't go for my eye test and I need new spectacles ?

Callistemon Sat 04-Apr-20 14:41:39

Not at him, at the precious incumbent
???

Callistemon Sat 04-Apr-20 14:41:04

I think people will sit up and take notice of what he has to say, whereas they may have dozed off previously.

Whitewavemark2 Sat 04-Apr-20 14:39:43

Starmer is wasting no time.

He has been talking to the Chief Medical Officer and Simon Stevens CEO of the NHS

About the covid crises.

Callistemon Sat 04-Apr-20 14:39:28

But it does not entirely consist of Union leaders, it should represent everyone Grandad, including those voted in to represent all those who do not belong to a Union.

Callistemon Sat 04-Apr-20 14:35:49

It's not only people south of that mythical line from the Bristol Channel to The Wash who go to university trisher!
I even know some of them.

Grandad1943 Sat 04-Apr-20 14:33:14

Callistemon, it is the Labour party/movement Annual Delegate Conference that sets out and endorses policy each time it meets. It is then for the National Executive Committee to oversee the enactment of those policies on a day to day basis between conferences.

The Annual Delegate Conference is the supreme policy-making body within the Labour movement and its decisions cannot be overruled.

Anniebach Sat 04-Apr-20 14:28:49

trisher Corbyn was the very opposite to your summing up
of Stammer, Corbyn lost the votes in the north

Galaxy Sat 04-Apr-20 14:27:34

And also demonstrates an interesting view of the North, those of us in the North are capable of voting for a university educated man. As a northerner it is Starmers career experience that appeals to me.

Urmstongran Sat 04-Apr-20 14:27:13

For Nandy to come as close to Long-Bailey as she did, with only a fraction of the resources backing her is quite notable.

Momentum support was likely to be the kiss of death for any candidate, but Long-Bailey was really the wrong horse to back. Nothing going for her other than devotion to her faction.
