This in response to the PM being hospitalised with this dreadful virus.

beverly10 could you be a little more circumspect with your wording please. I find funny farm somewhat inappropriate

POGS Sat 11-Apr-20 15:44:03

trisher

I see you are off again on the Tories are vermin again.

You are another gift that keeps on giving.

'I’m so sorry you seem to be taking the flack for the link that I posted POGS . How on earth anyone could defend this disgusting man (and plenty more like him it would seem) or try to dumb down his words by attacking government policy is beyond me.'
----

Thank you very much.

As we know we have at times different political views but I also know we conduct our disagreements with respect.

The point was I was being attacked by those who took my comment to be personal against them because they obviously had not read your link or they would have understood to what I was referring.

The irony transpires as we see on this thread they probably took it personally because it touched a nerve, irony or what.

'But you seem to imply still that we must all cease any negative comments about the conservative party'
----
NO I DO NOT.

M0nica Sat 11-Apr-20 14:15:28

maizie That is the answer I expected, still at least you didn't ignore it completely for once.

trisher Sat 11-Apr-20 13:06:34

Oopsminty I looked at the best and worse efforts. Portugal being the best, ours being the worst. The interesting thing is what was the best resulted in the best outcomes. Strange isn't it? And it seems still is producing the best results. No comments on that?

Whitewavemark2 Sat 11-Apr-20 13:05:55

The doctors are pleading. They are afraid. My niece is still a student but has been asked to work (free) she is in one of the London hospitals, she says it is desperate.

MaizieD Sat 11-Apr-20 12:51:02

No one seems to understand that the government were warned in 2017 and were aware then of the shortcomings in the NHS. They did nothing

This cannot be repeated too often, Wwmk2. They did nothing. They knew that a pandemic would be a disaster and the did nothing.

As for 'couldn''t afford it'; read the thread on 'Billions of pounds'. They could afford it, they could always afford it. Austerity was completely unnecessary. Austerity broke the economy, ran down all our public services, brought more people into poverty. Austerity was ideological. Tories wanted to destroy public services so that they could claim they needed to be privatised.

Just other countries are doing badly are absolutely no justification for our mess. Some other countries are doing well - how about looking at them?

Could you give me a link to the 1,000 specifically named individuals, or even specific groups of people that Boris specifically condemned to death?

Almost a comment to ignore, MOnica.

The UK government KNEW who the most vulnerable people would be. The government deliberately chose a policy that they KNEW would kill them. Only public outrage prevented them from carrying on with it overtly. As head of the government making that decision Johnson carries full responsibility.

A disturbed individual without a doubt.Funny Farm next stop.

Oopsminty Sat 11-Apr-20 12:45:20

Just picked the bits you like, Trisher?

Austerity caused huge problems across the EU

I'm sure you must have read about the riots? Record rates of unemployment? Banners claiming that Austerity Kills? Millions of people engaging in protest?

Here's a refresher

lemongrove Sat 11-Apr-20 12:43:18

Thanks for your sensible posts Chewbacca and of course all
Countries have had problems with coping with this virus in many similar ways.
It’s just another way of government bashing for some, and boringly predictable.

Anniebach,

Really interesting, hope the link works

trisher Sat 11-Apr-20 12:38:45

Oopsminty thanks for posting that link. I read all of it and found it interesting the UK's actions were amongst the most draconian and whereas other countries targeted the rich and increased taxes for them, we didn't. Portugal is an interesting country to look at both for its economic recovery and for its dealing with the Covid crisis. www.google.com/search?client=safari&rls=en&q=Portugal+and+covid+19&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8
It has of course a left wing government.

Anniebach Sat 11-Apr-20 12:35:45

No one knew this pandemic would happen.

Whitewavemark2 Sat 11-Apr-20 12:26:59

No one seems to understand that the government were warned in 2017 and were aware then of the shortcomings in the NHS. They did nothing

Whitewavemark2 Sat 11-Apr-20 12:25:43

1000 people a day dying, we are on a bigger trajectory than Italy. Clinicians dying because of lack of protection. A couple of weeks ago we were reporting Italy as if it was the worst case possible.

Think about it.

Chewbacca Sat 11-Apr-20 12:23:10

I wasn't trying to deflect or excuse anything trisher; where the issue of savage NHS funding cuts are concerned, you're preaching to the choir where I'm concerned. I'm just trying to illustrate that we, along with a many other countries were caught unawares of the magnitude that this virus would be and the amount of equipment and resources that would be needed to cope with it. Just trying to show some global perspective.

Oopsminty Sat 11-Apr-20 12:23:05

Here is a link about austerity measures implemented across the Eu.

It wasn't just the UK

www.europeaninstitute.org/index.php/112-european-affairs/special-g-20-issue-on-financial-reform/1180-austerity-measures-in-the-eu

The reason other countries have better health services than we do is due to the fact they pay for it quite differently

Our NHS is going to find it nigh on impossible to cope. No matter how much money is thrown at it. The last Labour government appreciated that as well

We have changed a great deal since 1948

I would love to see us now adopt a different way of funding. We should look to Europe for ideas.

Maybe this pandemic will see change

But I am not optimistic

trisher Sat 11-Apr-20 12:17:51

Annie the post can stand as can your lack of any evidence to your claim that I have ever supported racism. I never have.

trisher Sat 11-Apr-20 12:15:26

Chewbacca trying to deflect by posting other country's experiences just won't wash. The Tories have systenatically under funded the NHS for the last 10 years. They have refused to pay staff properly, withdrawn bursaries for nurse training, and forced staff to run on a restricted budget. Had they not done so we would have been better prepared in ALL areas for this crisis. PPE is just a small example, but vitally important for the staff involved. As for the US had the Tories been able to progress privatisation a little further than they managed, I think we would now have a situation similar to theirs, where states are bidding against each other to buy equipment, and would have hospitals and trusts behaving in a similar way.
How anyone can excuse the mess the NHS is in and pretend to support the staff coping with everything I don't understand.

Anniebach Sat 11-Apr-20 12:15:07

trisher I never hated Lord Robens, never wished him dead ,
would never have rejoiced in his death .

My anger which I still hold for the betrayal of the parents and community of Aberfan is against the unions who kept him in
his job knowing the enquiry into the deaths found
-he was economical with the truth’.

Report my post , I don’t care so no need to ‘be noble’

Oopsminty Sat 11-Apr-20 12:14:00

Yes WW2, it's a nightmare for all. My son is a doctor. I know all about the issues. I must point out though that the hospital where he is has sufficient PPE

But this is a worldwide problem

As was austerity. Read up about it.

Whitewavemark2 Sat 11-Apr-20 12:06:54

BMA reporting that doctors lives are at risk because of the PPE shortage.

That’s our doctors, members of our families, my cousin and my niece.

I worry for the world but I can only be influential in my own country atm

The government new the score from as far back as 2017, but their obsession with austerity ensured that people are dying.

Oopsminty Sat 11-Apr-20 12:04:27

It's pointless, Chewbacca

Everything that's happening is our government's fault apparently

Chewbacca Sat 11-Apr-20 11:54:58

trisher do you honestly believe it's only the UK's NHS that's struggling to get enough PPE equipment? Don't you read news from around the world about how medical staff and health professionals are dying because of a lack of protective clothing and equipment?

Here’s How Some Of The Countries Worst Hit By Coronavirus Are Dealing With Shortages Of Protective Equipment For Healthcare Workers Forbes.

The U.S.: Healthcare workers on the front lines have, in some cases, taken to creating PPE using office supplies, or reusing existing supplies more times than the CDC recommends in order to stretch supply. Doctors, nurses and medical workers desperate for more protection are protesting, while the New England Journal of Medicine has warned that “no matter which estimate we use, there are not enough ventilators for patients with COVID-19 in the upcoming months” in the U.S. Donald Trump ordered General Motors to make ventilators, but this week suggested that they could also be sent to Europe.

Italy: Now the worst-hit country by number of deaths linked to COVID-19, healthcare workers accounted for more than 8% of national infections between March 11 and 17, 2020, according to one study. At least 61 Italian doctors have died after contracting the virus, with the threat to front-line staff caused in part because of a lack of PPE. “So far, the outbreak-related global PPE shortage has forced the use of lower-protection PPEs,” including masks for infection control procedures on hospital patients, one study found.

Spain : Spain is the third-worst-affected country in terms of cases, and a severe PPE shortage has contributed to at least 12,000 healthcare professionals contracting the virus, or 14% of total infections, the New York Times reports. Some staff at Madrid’s La Paz hospital are left with little choice but to reuse gowns when treating different patients, and doubling up on flimsy masks in the absence of more sophisticated respirator masks. The shortage of PPE and its effect on the number of infections among medical professionals, is having a knock-on effect on the availability of medical staff.

France : Authorities have seized tens of thousands of face masks being hoarded by individuals seeking to profit from online price gouging. France’s health minister over the weekend said the government had ordered a billion masks from China, while 40 million are consumed there each week—around ten times precrisis levels, Reuters reported. French luxury brands Chanel and LVMH have pivoted their facilities to produce PPE and hand sanitizer.

India: Doctors are using raincoats and helmets in place of N95 masks, as Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the government is trying to get access to a bulk shipment of PPE from South Korea and China. Ambulance workers in one state are on strike, while one anonymous doctor told Reuters: “We won’t work at the cost of our lives.” India’s 1.3 billion residents are on lockdown, while there have been 1,250 confirmed cases to date.
