Oh dear, it's not going well is it?

Ellianne Mon 12-Oct-20 09:06:46

PS sorry .... Malala is a young lady now, not a girl, though that is how I will always see her!

PECS Mon 12-Oct-20 09:06:14

I have a "mixed" roots!
I look very White European and people who meet me respond to me assuming that I am 100% English.
If I looked more Arab my experience in British society would have been different. I always put Anglo/ Arab on forms that ask because it is important for me to acknowledge both my parents . Life was less easy for my father & grandmother because their cultural/racial roots were more obvious.

I've just watched the video interview with Malala. What an amazing young girl she is, so articulate and so committed in her work.
Meghan obviously supports all her causes and was able to give some insightful answers, if a bit long winded. Poor Harry, he was so out of his depth twiddling his fingers, staring at the floor and giving some rehearsed answers with no meaning. There was even an occasion when Malala said something about boys taking longer to grasp things, Meghan giggled and poor Harry well and truly squirmed on the sofa.
Even we he talked about Archie it was a quick reference without great enthusiasm before he got back to his rehearsed spiel which wasnt even asked for at that point.
I do feel for Harry, this isn't going to end well and unless he can find himself more of a rôle for himself I fear he is lost.

I feel that he has deserted his country and his people Just leaving the country when he was needed most

I appreciate that may e he just wanted to li r a normal life but he is not a normal person, the country has put alot into him, he has lived a privledged life and he can not just shrugg off his responsibility

I guess perhaps he may ha e left due to stress on him by his wife on one side and The Monarchy on the other, obviously he has to side with his wife

As well as being a little upset with his action I also do feel for him because he is not a bad person

Sorry I dont see how what you have posted undermines what pecs says.

PECS

How Meghan chooses to identify is her business alone. She has probably spent her life being seen as
a black person, being responded to as a black woman. Mixed race/ dual heritage/ of colour are just words..what matters is how her skin colour influences other people's response & attitudes to her.

Quite agree that it's her business and I don't really care one way or the other

However if you read the article posted above you will see that she was seen as white by many and never wanted to put just black in boxes when asked ethnicity.

Fast-forward to the seventh grade and my parents couldn't protect me as much as they could when I was younger. There was a mandatory census I had to complete in my English class – you had to check one of the boxes to indicate your ethnicity: white, black, Hispanic or Asian. There I was (my curly hair, my freckled face, my pale skin, my mixed race) looking down at these boxes, not wanting to mess up, but not knowing what to do. You could only choose one, but that would be to choose one parent over the other – and one half of myself over the other. My teacher told me to check the box for Caucasian. 'Because that's how you look, Meghan,' she said. I put down my pen. Not as an act of defiance, but rather a symptom of my confusion. I couldn't bring myself to do that, to picture the pit-in-her-belly sadness my mother would feel if she were to find out. So, I didn't tick a box. I left my identity blank – a question mark, an absolute incomplete – much like how I felt.

So no, Galaxy, PECS" explanation doesn't sum it up perfectly at all.

Galaxy Sun 11-Oct-20 21:28:24

Thanks PECS that sums it up perfectly.

Mixed race friends of my children refer to themselves as mixed race. They don't want to be called black as this negates the white parent.

It appears that Meghan was the same. Not sure if it's the media calling her black but in this article she explains she is bi-racial/mixed race.

In South Africa Meghan described herself as a woman of colour.

It's no wonder well meaning people without a racist bone in their bodies get confused.

Pantglas2 Sun 11-Oct-20 19:50:50

And this is where we get into ‘how we identify’ isn’t it? Male, female. Black, white.

I have a black friend who told me that my other friend with a black father/ white mother has no business identifying as black ‘when it suits’ (her words).

Meghan has disowned her white family so has chosen to identify as black - what will she do if Archie chooses to disown own side or t’other similarly?

I'm not upset by Megan calling herself, I simply stated a fact. She is not black, she is mixed race. Why does my stating the truth upset you summerlove?

Because she is Black? That’s how she identifies.

Why does that bother you?

biba70 Sun 11-Oct-20 19:18:07

'herself' of course.

biba70 Sun 11-Oct-20 18:51:15

Maddyone ''Megan is not black. She is mixed race. She is no more black than she is white, and no more white than she is black. She is mixed race so let's not call her black.''

who are you to decide how she should feel, and how she should identify yourself. Next you are going to say Obama wasn't black either.

Lexisgranny Sun 11-Oct-20 17:51:07

Galaxy

“l’m told that in 2019 I was the most trolled person in the entire world, male or female”.

And you think this is a turn of phrase. Hmm, well I’m afraid in that case we must agree to differ and move on.

maddyone Sun 11-Oct-20 17:42:12

Meghan calling herself back......

I should preview.

Galaxy Sun 11-Oct-20 17:24:46

I mean that her saying she is the most trolled person in the world is a turn of phrase.

Galaxy Sun 11-Oct-20 17:23:38

Oh for goodness sake that's just a turn of phrase. She will receive constant racial abuse and constant sexualised abuse because that is what happens to many women of colour.

Summerlove Sun 11-Oct-20 17:23:00

maddyone

Megan is not black. She is mixed race. She is no more black than she is white, and no more white than she is black. She is mixed race so let's not call her black.

Why does her identifying as black upset you so?

Surely it’s her skin, her body, her choice?

Ellianne Sun 11-Oct-20 16:38:09

Megan is not black. She is mixed race. She is no more black than she is white, and no more white than she is black. She is mixed race so let's not call her black.

That's interesting you say that maddyone.
I was just watching Formula 1 this afternoon and Lewis Hamilton self identified as black. (White mum, black dad).

Lexisgranny Sun 11-Oct-20 16:22:43

Not at all Galaxy, what a ludicrous suggestion. I am well aware of abuse not only to women but to men and children, all of which I find abhorrent, I do not need you to point it out to me.

However, instead of just saying that it was well documented that she had experienced trolling herself, in itself deplorable, Meghan had to say that she had been trolled more than anyone else in the world - which was untrue. Just as in Africa, against a background of incredible poverty she had to talk about the fact that no one asked her if she was OK when she was pregnant.

Lemon grove. Agree and never a more mismatched couple.
I hope Harry is given the strength to face what lies ahead.
