Tweet from Lord Sugar

I can’t say I’m a massive fan of Lord Sugar but I find myself agreeing with the sentiments in his tweet.
I too, am sick to death of all the negativity re: the handling of Covid19 by the Press and TV News.
This Pandemic had been a Global disaster but we are going to come through it and the Government are, obviously, doing their very best in unprecedented recent times.

NfkDumpling Sun 17-May-20 07:10:53

Why should the Government not be doing their best Hetty?

MaizieD Sun 17-May-20 06:54:29

I thought we'd seen it on here before.
Thanks, Hetty ?

Hetty58 Sun 17-May-20 06:50:06

A repeat of 22nd April, Mamissimo, Are the media misreading our mood?

Hetty58 Sun 17-May-20 06:46:25

Why drag this up again. I remember well, a few weeks ago, the post about negativity and the press not reflecting the 'mood' of the nation.

I said at the time that I don't want to live in Cloud Cuckoo land with rose-tinted glasses on.

Nothing has changed. The government 'doing their best'??

Sparkling Sun 17-May-20 06:45:21

There are obviously a few posters on here that could have handled this better than the extensive team of scientists and experts that have been. In future it might be better in a national crisis to save money and come on here and choose one. Just whom do you consult, certainly not your neighbour, the milkman or Joe Bloggs, just stop knocking this country all the time it's just adding fuel to the fire.

MaizieD Sun 17-May-20 06:27:39

Correction, I confused your daily figure with weekly figure. The excess death rate is still pertinent.

MaizieD Sun 17-May-20 06:24:16

@notanan Quoting 'normal' weekly death rate is a completely spurious argument. According to the Office of National Statistics (primary source) there have been deaths in excess of the 'normal' weekly 1400 in England and Wales to the tune of some 50,000+ since mid March to early May. 'Excess deaths' were running at 10,000+ for some weeks.

Comparisons of 'excess deaths' with those of other countries show us to be among the world leaders in this field. How you can spin this as being the helpless victims of a 'smart' virus is, quite frankly, breathtaking. It's as though we just have to take it on the chin because we're totally outwitted by it.

I suppose, in view of the fact that other countries have contained its spread and effects more effectively, we've just been subjected to a more virulent, smarter version. Oh, and of course, other countries, being full of cheating foreigners, lie about their figures, don't they?

notanan2 Sun 17-May-20 03:10:27

According to a preliminary google, on average 1400 die in England & Wales every day normally.

England is still counting covid deaths as "Died WITH covid" rather than died FROM covid" and Englands numbers also include people who die WITH suspected covid too so people who never tested positive

That means that if you were on your death bed with cancer or HIV etc with just weeks/days to live from that, you could still be counted in our Covid numbers.

notanan2 Sun 17-May-20 03:04:38

Its not a positive situation. But our press make out as if its all our own fault! As if the rest of the world is barely touched.

Viruses are smarter than us.

Nobody is "beating" it.

But there is good being done here still its not a totally forsaken hellish island in a world thats otherwise calm.

GrauntyHelen Sun 17-May-20 02:55:37

468 people died yesterday- positive news- NOPE CAN'T PUT A POSITIVE SPIN ON THAT

notanan2 Sun 17-May-20 01:42:51

What people dont realise about our VERY critical press (and its good to be critical but there should be balance) is that we are not the only ones reading it.

I'll say that again: we are not the only ones reading it!

Friends from abroad think that people here are close to riots. That nobody is complying with lockdown. That our health service is a shambles etc and that its generally the worst place to be on earth right now.

So what?

So when we try to recover from this and want people to visit again, study here again, do business here again. They wont. Because OUR press has been telling EVERYONE (not just us) that this is the worst possible place to be.

The return of the unicorns. Sweet!!!

NfkDumpling Sat 16-May-20 22:56:56

This appeared on my Facebook feed last week and, since I agree with the sentiments, I was going to post it on here.

I'm so glad I didn't bother.

So many armchair politicians here who could do much better than the government, but haven't managed to get voted into parliament.

MaizieD Sat 16-May-20 22:35:52

I seem to recall it was even posted somewhere on Gnet a while ago.

I think it is quite important that people are made aware that not everyone agrees with the content of the piece. Isn't that 'discussing' it?

If it isn't, then I'm so sorry to have disappointed your expectation that everyone would agree with it..

Buffybee Sat 16-May-20 21:19:47

MaisieD the tweet may have been doing the rounds on social media for a few weeks but perhaps others haven’t seen it and may be interested in discussing.
That is why I posted the re-tweet.
As the silly thing (re-tweet) doesn’t speak for you or anyone you have ever met in all your life and quite possibly the next and all of the www,
I think we get the point, it obviously holds no interest for you but others may want to have the chance to read it.

MaizieD Sat 16-May-20 20:09:50

It was vile, tickingbird. What an objectionable conclusion to jump to when all that SirChenjin said was that she didn't like him.

MaizieD Sat 16-May-20 20:07:23

Another disgusted here.

That silly thing Sugar retweeted has been doing the rounds on social media for a few weeks now. It doesn't speak for me at all, or for most of the people I have any contact with, either online or in real life.

MayBee70 Sat 16-May-20 20:04:20

I've rarely hear a good question from the press in the daily conference; even rarer is an answer from the politicians or so called scientific advisors. The latest word used by the latter appears to be 'granular'. What on earth does that mean? Eg today there was a question about how many diabetics were dying rom the virus. Science woman kept saying diabetics had other co morbidities. But wasn't asked for a break down of exactly how many diabetics had co morbidities. Reporters are very rarely allowed a come back question. It's just a waste of time. As for hope getting us through this; I'm afraid it's going to take more than hope. Having a proactive government rather than a reactive one might give me hope.

tickingbird Sat 16-May-20 20:02:37

*Objections to racism, etc but don't mind being anti-Semitic ?
It doesn't make sense*

I believe it’s called hypocrisy. Calling another poster vile too. No more than I’ve come to expect from that quarter unfortunately.

I’m with you dontmind and growstuff
Too disgusted to comment any further in fact.

growstuff Sat 16-May-20 19:54:44

No, you're not the only person dontmindstayinghome - and I'm not Jewish.

growstuff Sat 16-May-20 19:53:26

Most of us prefer the truth, but if you only seek positive answers maybe it is time to resort to fairy tale books.

SirChenjin Sat 16-May-20 19:47:40

I'd take the Huffington Post with a good pinch of salt too

I conclude from that you didn't actually open the link to view the screenshots of his less than polite and predictable responses.

dontmindstayinghome Sat 16-May-20 19:46:19

Am I the only person who is absolutely disgusted by EllanVanins post?
At What point did anyone mention Alan Sugars religion?
I don't like the odious little man at all. It has nothing whatsoever to do with his religion. I am Jewish myself.
