Can you think of a Prime Minister worse than Johnson?

I don’t mean whether you agree with certain political policies, I am talking about competence, knowledge and integrity.

I truthfully can’t think of a single one.

All PMs have a weakness, no doubt but this goes beyond anything I’ve every seen or read.

I still believe David Cameron to be the PM who has damaged this country most, by putting his party before country and allowing this brexit disaster to happen. If the fraudulent referendum of 2016 had never happened we would almost certainly now be in a much stronger position to deal with the pandemic.

The two most admired Prime Ministers of my, time in my own regard, are Clement Atlee and Harold Wilson.

Atlee along with his whole administration was undoubtedly the greatest peacetime government that the United Kindom has ever possessed.

Wilson was great at maintaining stability when the country was undergoing great change. Despite several upheavals, Ted Health also played a large role in transforming Britain from an imperial power into a large industrial and commercial power.

Tony Blair in the first few years of his premiership demonstrated that he had the capacity to bring about greatly required change to Britain. However, he went on to discard the core principles of the Labour movement he was supposed to represent and sold the soul of the Labour Party to the Bankers and arms manufacturers.

And we all now know how that ended.

I agree with you Foghorn and nanny re Blair but which Labour prime ministers have you admired and respected and do you think Johnson is doing a good job?

newnanny Thu 04-Jun-20 23:39:07

Tony Blair was the worst by far. He lied to us all and dragged us into a war he knew was unjust. I still cringe whenever I see him on TV.

FoghornLeghorn Thu 04-Jun-20 22:40:13

Well if we’re talking about integrity, or rather the lack of, top of the list has to be Tony Blair who lied to take us into a war. He caused the deaths of so many mother’s sons while his own and the ghastly Cherie’s were safe and sound.

I was reading a Spectator article about an ICU doctor in London and it said how when events started to unfold in China his hospital began holding meeings to plan for the virus outbreak. Johnson of course did nothing. Goodness knows how bad things would have been if hospital staff hadn't done this.

Just a little reminder of our failing government

“Boris Johnson & his ministers were so full of Brexit swagger they simply couldn't recognise that a disease already wreaking havoc in other countries could possibly be a threat to Britain.

Self-inflicted ideological blindness.

British exceptionalism at its worst.“

The pride of Johnson’s vote leave government

MissAdventure Wed 03-Jun-20 22:06:30

Oh, yes.
Allegedly, of course.. sniff.

growstuff Wed 03-Jun-20 21:45:39

MissAdventure I thought that was Gove (allegedly).

Furret Wed 03-Jun-20 21:18:32

I’m doubled over with that post Kapitan - love your sense of humour. Made me laugh for the first time in days. Thank you ?

trisher Wed 03-Jun-20 20:51:57

I think it's hilarious when someone tries to stand up for Johnson and has to resort to Brexit to do it. As if the last 12 weeks had never happened!!

Callistemon Wed 03-Jun-20 20:39:41

MissA grin

MissAdventure Wed 03-Jun-20 19:18:05

I'm not sure anyone's nose is safe from him.

Kapitan Wed 03-Jun-20 19:16:33

Johnson is one of the best Conservative leaders ever, After Churchill and Thatcher I will concede. I love how he still gets up the noses of defeated remainers.

growstuff Tue 02-Jun-20 22:32:33

Johnson has no leadership qualities. He's totally unfitted for his post. He was good at being the upper class twit raconteur on HIGNFY, but he's carried on with that image and been found sadly lacking.

As with so many Conservative leaders, I suspect his own careerist backbenchers will bring him down. He's already beginning to be a liability to the party. Most of the half-decent Conservatives have been hounded out, so I sincerely hope that Starmer and his new team can exploit that.

growstuff Tue 02-Jun-20 22:25:58

Dinahmo If you speak German Die Tagesschau has been laughing at the UK, and especially Johnson, for months. The programme also laughs at its own government and Merkel. I think it's ironic that a German programme has become so good at satire, which used to be a British strength.

Lucca Tue 02-Jun-20 21:26:34

Dinahmo. Excellent post.

Pantglas2 Tue 02-Jun-20 20:56:12

Why ever not Greta? What’s good for the goose.....

You can’t ask the question in the thread title and then expect every answer to be in agreement- or can you?

Greta Tue 02-Jun-20 20:20:47

Kapitan : Yes. Every Labour Prime Minister.

Shall we also include every Conservative Prime Minister?

Kapitan Tue 02-Jun-20 19:27:02

Yes. Every Labour Prime Minister.

Gajahgran

I completely agree with Growstuff'spost of 11.04.

I live in France and have done so for the last 12 years. Ever since the referendum our French friends have talked politics with us. They enjoyed John Bercow's pronouncements (especially Order!Order! which they would mimic). They were shocked at Johnson's attempts to prorogue Parliament but most importantly they were bemused by and shocked at the decision to leave the EU.

They are even more shocked at the way in which the British govt has dealt with covid and are now beginning to laugh at the UK.

Despite living here I am English and will always be so. Like many others I will have to seek French residence now that we have left the EU but I will not be applying for French nationality.

We came here as a project for our retirement. I used to think that we would return to the UK at some point but now, with the state the country is in and the divisions, I'm not sure that I want to.

Can any of you who voted to leave the EU see Britain becoming great again?

I apologise for turning this towards Brexit but I think that some people are wearing blinkers when it comes to the state of the country (and I don't mean the ravages of covid)

Apologies, I misspelt your name Gajahgran, that was quite unintentional.
