Billionaire Richard Desmond, who made his fortune from pornography is a former owner of The Daily Express and Tory Party donor has now turned to property development .

The housing secretary knew that the billionaire former media tycoon had only 24 hours to have an east London property development approved before community charges were imposed that would have cost him over £40m.

Robert Jenrick’s accepted that his approval of one-time Conservative-supporting billionaire Richard Desmond’s project at the Isle of Dogs was unlawful.

Documents related to the consent order for the development show that the minister was aware that a council-imposed community infrastructure levy (CIL) would have been introduced on 15 January this year.

Against the advice of his own planning inspector, the minister gave the go-ahead for the construction of more than 1,500 apartments in a 44-storey complex on 14 January. Jenrick’s decision was made just 24 hours before the Tower Hamlets CIL would have cost Desmond at least £40m.

In the LGC this planning permission was quashed today by the Secretary of State.

Sorry it was yesterday, not today.

How is he allowed to get away with this? It seems so blatant. Just shows how little they think they have to abide by the rules. All sounding horribly familiar.

At least it’s now going to be reconsidered and there are requests in for all the paperwork around the “dodgy” decision making.

Seems a pity to me that Tower Hamlets wasn’t able to claim the penalty fee.

There are so many scandals surrounding the Tory Party that are being conveniently buried by the pandemic.

In the meantime we are headed towards a disastrous no-deal brexit which it seems no-one is able to stop.
