Rather than erasing the injustices of the past I would have thought that the prime objective of BLM and any progressive society should be to address the present day injustices.

George Floyd Protests in Hyde Park
(1001 Posts)There are 1000’s of protesters in Hyde Park as I post this, no social distancing.
When in two to three weeks time the UK Covid-19 figures go up and more people die these protesters will be responsible!
These protesters are going to cause the next wave of coronavirus, only hope they are the ones who get it
Already the R number is up in Bristol
As for pulling the statue down i think that was wrong,
Maybe it should be or have been removed, but also could serve as a reminder of what happened in the past re the slave trade, ,you can't change history, only try to make sure it doesn't happen again, but not like this
The protests are in disagreement with the killing of the black man by a white policeman, and although of course it was wrong and the policeman should be punished, the man was a violent criminal, and is being glorified now
So the protesters are putting their own families at risk for something that happened in America
Quite, anniebach.
Critical thought seems to be fine as long as it suits the agenda.
Anniebach whilst I agree with the last paragraph of WWMK2 post of 09.56 and your subsequent post, there is more chance of Prince Andrew becoming the King of The United Kingdom.
I think that people were, of course relieved when hostilities came to an end and perhaps they knew that Churchill was the right leader at that time. He did ask leaders of the other parties to serve in the Coalition Government. Perhaps none of the other leaders had the strength of character required at that time.
His popularity rating at the end of the war stood at 83%.
That meant nothing by the time of the GE. I would think that people were thankful for his leadership that had brought victory over the Nazis but now wanted something different; a new way of life as proposed by Attlee.
Whitewavemark2 going by your last post I assume that you are happy to see The Coleseum, The Pyramids and any other world heritage site that was constructed by slaves destroyed in the name of "rejection of the previous historical narrative"
I would prefer to leave them for future generations to see in person rather than a clip on Utube!
Whitewave - seriously, it wasn't pointed at you. So many people have commented abut their grandparents, including myself.
‘Nothing is ever black and white and I would be grateful if some could remember that when criticising’.
I too would be grateful if some could remember that Whitewave regardless of the subject being discussed
iam64 as I had posted about my grandparents I am not sure what I was supposed to think of your sentence?
For those advocating education of the population, I think you are beginning to find out that that is exactly what is beginning to happen. Thence the removals of the symbols of white privileged power, and the rejection of the previous historical narrative.
So Covid-19 is now not a problem for anyone wishing to protest in vast numbers with little or non existent social distancing in support of BLM.
I do hope that they inform all of us who are in the shielding / vulnerable groups what magic/medicinal protectant they have discovered?
Well whitewave I wasn't pointing at you with the grannie comment.
"nothing is ever black and white and I would be grateful if some could remember when criticising"
I agree.
Please try not to be snide jabberwok. Grandad 1943 made the sweeping but succinct generalisation that Churchill was highly regarded by all. I made the factual succinct point that he wasn't.
iam64 I quoted my grandparents and parents of examples of those who did not hold Churchill in the highest regard. Please don’t belittle their opinions, honestly kept by sentences like your last one.
They were not the only ones of that opinion, and to suggest they were is just wrong.
However, you are also making the assumption that those critical of Churchill did not respect some of his strengths like his powerful oratory skills, his ability to stiffen his sinews when required to do so.
Nothing is ever black and white and I would be grateful if some could remember that when criticising.
Please try to not be snide jabberwok. Grandad 1943 made the sweeping generalisation that all held Churchill in high
Yes Callistemon there can’t be many European countries that didn’t want to colonise where they could.
The African tribes had slaves themselves and did trade by capturing those from other tribes, as you say.
Callistemon regarding Who do you think you are, it has been interesting.
Educate the population so that they are not repeated
That is the best thing that we can do.
Spain and Portugal were the first colonists I believe, lemongrove and the first to trade slaves.
What people fail to mention, or perhaps do not realise, is that many African tribes were themselves slave traders, capturing people from other tribes and selling them to the highest bidder.
Perhaps the ancestors of many of today's protestors were involved in some way or another.
It s a shameful period in history but many people alive today will have no idea if or how their ancestors were involved of whatever ethnic origins.
Who Do You Think You Are has thrown up some shocking facts for some who cherished their heritage.
How did your Nan imagine that a war could be won without loss of life Nanee49? I think Grandad was referring to people who survived the fighting, not those who stayed at home!
Not sure that every history book has been written by those in power WWMK2
You do know that not all the ills of the world are the fault of British White men? Go back to the Egyptians, Genghis Khan, Attila the Hun along with the Romans and the early day Popes are the BLM going to destroy these artifacts?
I am not responsible for acts committed years ago and I will not be an apologist for them. Educate the population so that they are not repeated.
Iam64 your last sentence is a valid one.....and made me smile too.?
Blimey jabberwok that was a massive assumption!!
Grandad was shot and seriously wounded in the Dardanelles, left on the beach for 3 days. He never recovered sufficiently to take any further part in the First World War.
He was a fire watcher in Plymouth throughout the Second World War.
My father was in the RAF during the Second World War in India. He was injured and spent many months in hospital in the Indian foothills before returning to work.
My uncle was captured by the Japanese put on board what was called a “hell ship” and spent the war just outside Nagasaki
Mum was of course in war work.
Why that precludes them from either intelligent thought or the right to critical debate I don’t understand?
Apologies if my quote wasn’t spot on, it could be ‘the past is another country ‘etc. But you get the gist.
If its true that only those in over write the narrative of history, how come so many of us on this thread have been able to develop our own views.
Of course Churchill made some tactical errors in WW2 - who wouldn't? He was scared by Gallipoli and desperate not to repeat the errors made there.
I may have grown up in an unusual family, if so, it sounds as though Grandad did as well. My parents admired what Churchill did for this country in WW2 but, they grew up with fathers who fought in WW1 and returned to the poverty and deprivation we all know faced those young men. WW2 confirmed in the next generation, a determination to live in a fairer society, where no one went hungry, where decent housing and health was available for not just the wealthy. Hence the Labour government. Churchill's tories didn't stand a chance.
Just because somebodies grannie hated Churchill doesn't mean he was not generally held in high regard for his war effort.
