Yes, it’s only a statue, but it’s the property of the city.No doubt it will have to be hauled out of the river now at great cost to the council/citizens of Bristol.
The scenes reminded me Iraq, where they pulled down the statue of Saddam Hussein, all the hitting of it with shoes as an insult.I couldn’t quite believe that people in Bristol were actually hitting and jumping on a piece of bronze.Not that the statue cared.I did wonder that if a person they disliked had appeared in their midst just then, if they would have torn him limb from limb. Mobs become like that.

Child exploitation in this country is horrendous with last years figure at 19,000. There are 1,800 live slavery operations on-going in this country.

How about setting up a protest for these children who CAN'T speak out for fear of being killed. They are used as drug-runners and sex-slaves.

I think the violence, vandalism, and total disregard for social distancing rules has totally overshadowed what the protest was actually about.
They’ll lose so much support because of this.

I think the Floyd case will be an interesting one to follow. The initial autopsy showed that he had underlying health conditions and intoxicated by Fentanyl at the time if his death. Another autopsy commissioned by the family suggested that his death was likely to have been caused directly by asphyxiation.

My understanding is that he's been charged with murder and not manslaughter.

With family in the police who may well be caught up in this, I switched on the BBC news last night to see how many of the 27 unarmed officers injured in the London protests had been seriously hurt (it was reported earlier that at least two had been). They were not mentioned, so obviously don’t matter, whatever their race or colour.

Furret, yes it is a statue that can be cleaned up, but the action in defacing it demonstrated the mind set of those who carried out that action, and also those who would try to make excuses for them.

Again, they are mindless morons that would deface a monument to a person who saved this nation from invasion by the greatest racist this world has ever known, and that is a criminal act.

In the above, they should be prosecuted to the fullest extent so as that record can remain in existence for all to reference for the rest of their lives.

I confess I had to laugh when protesters pulled down the statue of the slave trader in Bristol, tied it up with ropes and tipped it into the harbour!

Those that defaced the statue of Winston Churchill during the Wesstminster demonstrations yesterday are nothing short of total scum.

Those excuses for human beings were there supposedly demonstrating against racism when they decided to desecrate the statue of a person who saved this nation from an invasion led by the largest and most powerful racist this world has ever known.

If anyone thinks these demonstrations will serve any useful purpose I think they are deluded. No regard for public safety and health, destroying monuments, endangering the lives of the policeman their to control the erupting violence. It's sickening. All this harping back to the past continuously. No mention of the people of colour who have businesses or those at the moment are in high government positions. What happened in America was dreadful, probably 6 policemen will spend 40 years in prison, they are hard places there, can you imagine their treatment once incrarcerated. No right minded person condones what happened or thinks it right. We have had atrocities happen here against policemen, innocent civilians and the military, by people of colour, but no demonstrations. Whatever they sought to achieve I don't know, but it's certainly hadn't worked. Violence to stop violence. Everything twisted.

Jishere, in regard to your post @23:46 yesterday, should there be any medical students who are being drafted into hospitals to help with the Covid crisis find they do not wish to carry that out that work, they can always resign from their degree course.

A slave in that position would have no option but to carry out those tasks.

Perhaps such students as you site Jishere would do well by all in this nation if they did not go on to work in the health service if they are not prepared to give their all in a pandemic.

Many that are employed in the distribution industry have given everything in terms of working very long unsocial hours were social distancing etc has been often impossible so all of us are able to find food in the supermarket when we visit.

Numerous employed people who work in other essential industries have done similar.

In her reign she would have not wanted to even breathe the same air never mind see the poverty with her own royal eyes .

pinkquartz It would be impossible to have a totally equal society, but I don't see why it would be impossible to have a society in which skin colour is irrelevant.

I realise there's more to race than skin colour, but that's a prejudice which still needs to be overcome.

There are some workers, such as cleaners, who work for outsourcing companies, who are paid minimum wage.

Hey Grandad1943 have you read about the 3rd year student nurses who have been brought in to help the front line fight against covid19. They are not getting paid. Does that make them slaves? Although they feel used no doubt like most NHS staff they are dedicated and have alot of compassion and that's why they chose the years of study to become part of the NHS.

Not enough History is taught in schools.
It does matter.

Hull is almost “down South” compared to my little place in the country Calli . We are not “on the way to anywhere” and you would have to take a detour to get here .
