Meghan's Speech

I would have applauded this speech had Meghan been an A list celebrity in her own right and not used her marriage to a member of the RF as a leg up on to the platform she now occupies.

Now she's back in LA where she always wanted to be, she's in the thick of massive racist issues involving violent demonstrations. It seems it was ever thus in the USA.

I couldn't help thinking back to her self pitying comments about racism in the UK. Now we're caught up in the turmoil caused by an act of racist violence in her own country where she fled to 'escape' her unfair treatment over here. hmm

Why is it ok for trisher to be accused of having a crush on Meghan ?

Oldwoman70 Sat 06-Jun-20 13:53:32

However, according to Harry on Radio 4. Meghan had a marvellous time with his family Christmas 2017

My colleague laughed and went along with the hair rubbing - later when we were alone I asked him how he really felt about it and said he was embarrassed and annoyed but felt he had to pretend it was OK. Perhaps Meghan did the same and Harry was saying what was expected of him.

We have no idea how the RF act in private

True.

However, according to Harry on Radio 4. Meghan had a marvellous time with his family Christmas 2017

He went as far to say that the Royals were the 'family she'd never had'.

Which obviously caused some consternation amongst her relatives

In fact that was when her family all kicked off

These Meghan threads all end up exactly the same. The same people saying the same things.

I would bet my house that H&M aren't eagerly perusing tGN for any good news.

Social media and forums are just areas where anyone and everyone can vent their feelings

Not everyone has t he same opinion. Which is what people want. A forum where everyone is a nodding dog would be rather boring.

There are many types of racism - it doesn't have to overt. I knew people who were adamant they were not racist yet still said and did things which showed their true feelings, like encouraging people to rub a black colleagues hair - surprised at how soft it was, when another black colleague started something they would take over because "you won't be able to do it"

We have no idea how the RF act in private - as I recall Philip isn't exactly careful about what he says, has he passed those views on to his family. I don't often agree with trisher but in this instance I do - no-one has any idea what sort of welcome she really received.

If you're looking for the truthmaddyone please dont think you'll find it on BBC or Sky news .The BBC wouldn't know the truth if they tripped over it and Sky is as right wing as it gets .
Find some unbiased media ..its not easy but there are some available .The new Director General of the BBC is a failed Tory candidate and chair of a tory association

trisher Sat 06-Jun-20 13:10:25

I've no idea maddyone because I didn't spend every minute of her time in the UK with her. Nor I think did you. If she felt racially abused she has the right to say so. She and other black women believe the British press were racist. You can read aout that here www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2020/01/10/british-tabloids-drove-meghan-away-theyll-never-learn/
You may beleive it wasn't racist, but just as a man should not insist a woman has not been sexually harassed when she says she has been, you should not insist there was no racism.

maddyone Sat 06-Jun-20 12:57:36

How was Meghan racially abused?

trisher Sat 06-Jun-20 12:45:51

Incidently all those people who supposedly "know" about MM and racism and how it never happened, you do realise that exactly the same statements have always been made about women and sexual harrassment, and women and domestic violence, don't you? You don't "know", You can't "know" because you were not the person who felt racially abused. You could try understanding.

trisher Sat 06-Jun-20 12:40:44

Isn't it funny that so many people who allegedly know that what they post is true and not just biased condemnation somehow identify with my statement about GNers "to prove we are not all embittered old crones"?
If a woman has chosen to speak out about her personal experiences, refused to live with her in-laws and taken her family to live in her home country, all she is doing is asserting her independence and I will stand with any woman, even one I dislike personally, and her right to do that. Not to do so is to return women to the position of goods and chattels to be disposed of and used as the patriachy chooses.

maddyone Sat 06-Jun-20 12:28:35

Incidentally, I would never claim that racism doesn’t exist, it clearly does, but Meghan was not subject to racism from the Royal Family or the British people.

maddyone Sat 06-Jun-20 12:26:54

trisher
All women are not saints, lots of women commit crimes or are dislikeable in some way. The same with men. I will not stand shoulder to shoulder with people who are in some dislikeable in some way, simply because they are women. That includes Meghan because she is a hypocrite in my opinion and also in my opinion she is dishonourable in the way she has behaved. I know this because of what has been reported regularly, not because of gutter press, which I don’t read. I get my information from mainstream media, ie BBC, SkyNews etc. On the other hand you know nothing about the women on Gransnet apart from what they write. You don’t like what they write, and so you are rude and nasty about them. However they know far more about Meghan and her behaviour than you could ever even hope to know about any Gransnetter.

Jabberwok Sat 06-Jun-20 12:17:28

Meghan was not subjected to racism in the UK! She was made more than welcome both by the RF who bent over backwards to welcome her and make her part of the family. The public and media went overboard to welcome her, where does anyone think those cheering crowds came from? She was a 36 year old divorcee and a working actress, hardly a young innocent abroad! She must have been perfectly aware of what joining the RF would mean, and if she didn't she should have made it her business to find out and that no one would or could change their way of doing things particularly while the Queen was alive! Perhaps her husband should have made that clear to her!, You'll get luxury, privilege, servants bowing and scraping, in fact a life that the rest of us could only dream of, some at taxpayers expense!! BUT, and there is a but, in exchange for this charmed life, you also have royal duties and hierarchy within the family to cope with, some of which must be crucifyingly boring, and tedious. This is what Meghan couldn't or wouldn't cope with, nothing to do with racism.

Furret Sat 06-Jun-20 12:06:17

So what? Many catholic clergy supported Hitler. You’ll always get some.

Exactly what point are you trying to make?

MaizieD Sat 06-Jun-20 12:01:04

Has anyone seen the YouTube clip of a black lady named Candace Owens talking about George Floyd

You're perhaps not aware, Grannyjay that, despite being black herself, Candace Owens is a leading light in US extreme right circles, which tend to be white supremacist, and a fervent Trump supporter.

Furret Sat 06-Jun-20 11:44:13

So people like Meghan are to be disbelieved when they claim they have been subjected to racism?

Is this the same way that children are not to be believed about sexual abuse or women about being raped?

Disbelief! That’s the attitude that perpetrated so much evil over the years.

trisher Sat 06-Jun-20 11:35:17

If you consider "to prove we are not all embittered old crones" is aimed at you Annie I suppose that is something. I didn't call any single poster that, unlike your attacks which are always personal. If it makes people think about the things they post about MM, job done.
There have always been women who have undermined and condemned other women they saw as not conforming to their prescribed ideas of the ways women should behave. Mostly this involves them keeping quiet, behaving themselves, and not disrupting anything. Generally all the things that MM is condemned for.

Anniebach Sat 06-Jun-20 11:01:04

thank you kitty I was shocked that a poster who posts much
on ‘women standing shoulder to shoulder’ launches a vicious
verbal attack on women she disagrees with.

The definition of Crone is ‘ugly old woman’,

I suppose comparing me with Megan trisher is right, but I am not nasty or embittered.

Nanna58 Sat 06-Jun-20 10:59:13

I don’t think anyone is ‘bashing Meghan’ just honestly pointing out that her comments that she was exposed to racism in this country were unfair, and that maybe removing herself back to a country where racism is, and always has been, endemic, was possibly not the wisest of moves!

Furret Sat 06-Jun-20 10:51:55

I too find it offensive that anyone can exhibit so much venom towards a women they only know through the filter of the media.

Led by the nose like a bull with a ring.

kittylester Sat 06-Jun-20 10:47:28

I agree Annie.

Anniebach Sat 06-Jun-20 10:30:29

trisher I don’t care what names you call me, but I do care
you call other posters on this thread ‘nasty, embittered , old
crones’ . That didn’t offend ?

Those who have come on this thread to support you and
attack me have no problem with your offensive description of
other women .

I think it hypocritical.

trisher Sat 06-Jun-20 10:13:56

Annie shall I explain? Choosing to accuse women supporting each other of attachments which are purely emotional or sexual has long been the way men have chosen to denigrate women. If you fail to understand the true implications of your accusation then I am sorry for you. Many of us active in women's politics have suffered such acccusations for so long we assume that everyone knows this. It is one of the constant refrains of the patriachy. You didn't just offend me, you offended every woman who has stood shoulder to shoulder with other women, from the suffragettes to the pink pussy movement.

Grannyjay Sat 06-Jun-20 10:08:47

Has anyone seen the YouTube clip of a black lady named Candace Owens talking about George Floyd and her refusal to accept this hero worship of a criminal which is putting black people to shame. It is long but what a intelligent young lady she is telling it as it is for many black lives in America and how disgusting the media has projected it to go along with the black communities using it to their advantage. All I can say about this beautiful young being is WOW.

BlackGrannie Sat 06-Jun-20 08:22:43

Furret, I'm glad she spoke out too, racism is real, can't be ignored by banning the word, racist acts large and small are with us every day here in the UK

Eloethan Sat 06-Jun-20 00:17:24

Your capacity for sneering innuendo is in full flow today Anniebach - suggesting that someone craves conflict ("feeding the need") and has a "crush" on Meghan Markle is a very passive aggressive and cowardly way of maligning a person's motivation, character and mental health.

I find it irritating that you can start threads on the religious forum and piously quote the scriptures while at the same time see no incongruence with the nastiness youcontinue to demonstrate towards the few characters you despise, even those - like Diana - who are dead? Do you malign so fiercely the characters of other members of the royal family, such as Andrew? No. Your response to the criticism of his behaviour towards young, vulnerable women was "Surely it’s girls who need moral and social education to save them from becoming victims".
