A morale booster for the nation

The country is on its knees. People are struggling with illness, bereavement, job loss and poverty. We are facing a long lasting economic crisis.

Can’t afford to feed your family? Lost your job? Can’t pay your mortgage? Worry not because here is the answer to our problems.

Lord Digby Jones has worked out the top priority during this lockdown period and is leading a campaign, along with Tory MPs, to spend £100million on a new royal yacht. He said it will boost the morale of the nation.

He suggested small businesses could contribute £5k each.

I can’t comment because I’m speechless!

b1zzle Mon 08-Jun-20 10:23:00

Words fail me too ...

25Avalon Mon 08-Jun-20 10:26:35

It used to be that the Royal yacht was a great trade spinner and could be useful in promoting trade with other nations and a new one would thus maybe pay for itself? Not sure now is the right time. I guess it would boost the Royal Family’s morale. Pity the original was scrapped in the first place - was that something else down to Blair?

This is "LORD" Digby Jones who tweeted about Nicola Sturgeons hair ? Who tweeted about Ian Blackford going HOME to Skye who it seems is desperate to get publicity .Is he bored or just a headcase ..he certainly needs some therapy .Spending a huge amount of TAX PAYERS cash on a new yacht for Lizzie and her parasites while children are going hungry is vile .IF theres £100 MILLION going spare it should be spent where its needed .Digby Jones is a first class clown !1

Elegran Mon 08-Jun-20 10:33:15

I can't see Lizzie thinking it a good idea either. She was very attached to Brittania, but she has more sense than to welcome the notion of £100K being spent on a new Royal yacht in the current circumatances.

wendyann23 Mon 08-Jun-20 10:33:24

It certainly would not boost my morale! Quite the opposite.

silverlining48 Mon 08-Jun-20 10:39:16

Shockingly insensitive if this is true.

Jabberwok Mon 08-Jun-20 10:48:47

I don't think so!! I would think the Queen would be horrified and hopefully veto it!

GillT57 Mon 08-Jun-20 10:53:47

Desperately insensitive is the most polite way I would describe it. Who does he think is going to bob around drumming up business? Prince Andrew? I see that stupid little man Francois is pushing this too. 25 Avalon it was John Major who announced the future decommissioning of Britannia in 1994, good try.

Namsnanny Mon 08-Jun-20 11:02:50

25Avelon ... you might be on the right track. After all his background is in business.
Until I know more I cant make a more informed comment.

Namsnanny Mon 08-Jun-20 11:06:23

GillT57 ... nice try?? Childish comment.
We just want to hear all sides dont we?

EllanVannin Mon 08-Jun-20 11:09:59

I had to laugh, but I think it's hysteria. Must've been the name-----Digby. Elmer Fudd would have been best suited.

Grannynannywanny Mon 08-Jun-20 11:12:57

silverlining48 I’m afraid it’s true. I read it online during my breakfast news update. I posted it here once I picked myself off the floor.

But I’ve since seen the buffoon on tv this morning shamelessly touting his idea. He suggests funding could be a 3 way split between tax payers money, small businesses ( are they not also tax payers?) and lottery funding.

I suppose the fees he’ll now receive for tv and radio interviews and newspaper articles will keep him ticking over till he gets back to the House of Lords for his £305 day signing in fee.

GillT57 Mon 08-Jun-20 11:16:17

Namsnany, I don't understand your point? 25Avalon was making a political point about Blair and I posted the facts. Not sure why you dived in. Anyway, this whole idea is bonkers, does anyone seriously think that it is a good idea?

merlotgran Mon 08-Jun-20 11:36:02

Has it not occurred to him that the taxpayer might be a tiny bit miffed about this?

We're still angry about the money wasted on Frogmore Cottage.

Namsnanny Mon 08-Jun-20 11:37:25

GillT .. didn't dive in, made a point. If you dont understand fair enough

quizqueen Mon 08-Jun-20 12:17:44

If any money was be spent on a boat, it should to be spent on a navy one, which will protect our fisherman's rights when the EU try to fish illegally in our waters after 30th Dec 2020!!!!

JenniferEccles Mon 08-Jun-20 12:21:44

This is not new as there has been talk of building a new royal yacht for years.

The timing is all wrong though as most people won’t think about how it would be utilised, as Britannia was, to host trade deals and generate millions of pounds worth of business for the country.

Instead it would just be seen as a lovely new holiday home for the royals which probably wouldn’t go down too well!

Parsley3 Mon 08-Jun-20 12:26:05

I have just been reading about this in the Express. Phillip, it says, has not forgiven Major for the decision to scrap the Royal yacht and that it would be a fitting birthday present for him if a new yacht was commissioned.
Unbelievable! Surely there won’t be many Tory MPs who will get behind this bonkers idea.

25Avalon Mon 08-Jun-20 12:27:55

Actually I wasn’t making a political point about Blair. I honestly couldn’t remember who decommissioned it which is why I asked. Should have googled instead.

MaizieD Mon 08-Jun-20 12:30:01

I know what would boost my morale and it has nothing to do with royal yachts. grin

More to do with the sharp exits of some people from No 10 Downing Street....

This utterly bonkers idea (the Royal Yacht) has been mooted before. It'll die down again...

MaizieD Mon 08-Jun-20 12:31:25

Why TF would 'the nation' want to give Prince P a birthday present? Can't his family afford to give him one?

Grammaretto Mon 08-Jun-20 12:47:04

He is a known idiot. Take no notice.

BlueBelle Mon 08-Jun-20 12:52:44

I haven’t heard this its abysmal I have no words for it
If the Queen accepts it then she’s as bad as the rest
