I am not trying to be controversial, but...........

Much has been written universally about the appalling murder of George Floyd and the subsequent global reaction. I wholeheartedly agree that not only black people, but other ethnic minorities have been, and still are experiencing unacceptable discrimination, which must stop.
The removal of the statue of Edward Colston in Bristol has resulted in demands for all statues of those connected with the slave trade being removed. This has now escalated to calls for this to be extended to road signs etc that incorporate their names.
My question is what about the hospitals, schools and charitable institutions that were endowed by those who benefited from slavery and bear their names? Where does it stop? For example Guys Hospital was founded by Thomas Guy, a philanthropist who had made a great deal of money from the South Sea Company. Will public opinion demand that it’s name be changed? Discrimination and slavery are abhorrent, but as to the rest, I don’t know, but would be very interested to hear what Gransnetters think.

Mmm. I wonder what these wanton idiots would call you EllanVannin. I am still trying to find out why some people indulge quite so much in name calling. I imagine it's much the same explanation as why some people swear.

Grammaretto Re your comment about the German girl and our constant remembering about the war and repeatedly showing war films. I have to admit however that I thought the recent films to be generally very good.

I live in the Dordogne which you will know was occupied by the Germans and there are many sites of Nazi atrocities in the area. We have few German tourists but I have noticed that plaques on many buildings where atrocities were committed have been altered and the word Germans replaced by the word Nazis. Driving around one sees many small memorials dedicated to one or more who were killed by the Nazis.

There are still divisions between those whose families were collaborators and those of resistance members. It's 75 years since the war ended and I suspect those divisons will not be healed for some years yet. I just hope that the divisions that are occurring in the UK may be healed more quickly.

It is wanton damage carried out by protesters/ idiots who just want to create mayhem, nothing else, GGumteenth. They're only there to rid themselves of their angst, without a thought what anything stands for.

GGumteenth Fri 12-Jun-20 13:27:13

Are you now suggesting that those who protest are by that very fact "idiots" EllanVannin? Why? Because they don't agree with you?

Damaging property is covered under the law and can be dealt with by that. Why the name calling? Just as you suggest than the particular protesters you are decrying are there to rid themselves of their anxiety and dread, I might be tempted to think that is the reason behind your constant name calling.

If it is anxiety and dread that drives them, wouldn't it be better to find out why they are anxious and what they dread and do something about it?

Davidhs

Manhole - Operative Aperture, has been for years

So if anyone dislikes the word manhole, they now know where to tell someone to stick it.?

Iam64 Fri 12-Jun-20 13:38:39

ExD - there is a poster called blackgran. I hope she doesn't find your entire post as offensive as this white gran does.

I don't know which is worst---far left or far right, there's NO middle ground whatsoever and it's totally wrong.
It's alright those getting their own way but what about the other millions to be considered in this country ?

I'm not personally bothered about statues as I don't know who half of them are but Churchill who saved this country from a fate worse than death is there because we can have this discussion so let's not forget that.
I'd be happy to see General de Gaulle left alone too in London.

Obviously there is a middle ground. The fact that you don't recognise it does not make it disappear.

EllanVannin Fri 12-Jun-20 14:17:59

Where does the statue of Oswald Mosely stand ?

Whitewavemark2 Fri 12-Jun-20 14:19:08

???

EllanVannin Fri 12-Jun-20 14:19:25

It might be obvious to you but it isn't to me.

Whitewavemark2 Fri 12-Jun-20 14:21:23

James O'Brien
@mrjamesob
My favourite politicians are the ones who vote to close libraries but claim that statues of slavers are of immense educational importance.

EllanVannin Fri 12-Jun-20 14:25:26

All that's happening now will feed the far right. It'll see Tommy Robinson dusting off the moth-balls.
It's going to happen !

Even the blacks don't want this---ripping the country apart.

Whitewavemark2 Fri 12-Jun-20 14:26:06

A colour bar introduced by Winston Churchill prevented Manchester boxer Len Johnson from becoming a champion – now a new campaign wants to recognise him with a statue in the city.

Glad this idea is catching on! Long overdue...

EllanVannin Fri 12-Jun-20 14:26:52

Where in London is the statue then, WWM2 ?

Whitewavemark2 Fri 12-Jun-20 14:28:07

Which statue?

janeainsworth Fri 12-Jun-20 15:12:33

I've just been reading that it was because the major made racist comments about the West Indian cricket team
Yes growstuff that’s what I read too.
But John Cleese and Connie Booth were actually calling out racism, not condoning it.
If anyone should have been offended, it should have been retired army officers of a certain age who were being portrayed as bumbling, racist bigots.
Private Eye have a column in which the current Prime Minister is portrayed in an unflattering but nevertheless amusing light.
It doesn’t mean the magazine supports them or their policies.

Grammaretto Fri 12-Jun-20 15:34:36

Dinahmo thanks. That is rather sad but interesting.
I had thought we were the only country in Europe who kept triumphalist views.

Years ago probably 1980s a young German teacher living here in Scotland told me he didn't object to Germans being portrayed as evil (which they often were) but not stupid, as they were in all the boys' comics at the time. It was tongue in cheek but it was then I began to notice these things.

growstuff Fri 12-Jun-20 15:40:33

Exactly janeainsworth. I wonder if some people have a sort of parody bypass.

growstuff Fri 12-Jun-20 15:43:18

Apparently, Tommy Robinson is organising some kind of protest in London tomorrow. BLM have called on people not to attend.

EllanVannin Fri 12-Jun-20 15:46:43

Oswald Mosely, WWM2.

EllanVannin Fri 12-Jun-20 15:47:27

His name hasn't been mentioned once ?

EllanVannin Fri 12-Jun-20 15:48:33

I doubt that he'll be there Growstuff, but his followers will be.

growstuff Fri 12-Jun-20 15:49:14

How do you know?

Loislovesstewie Fri 12-Jun-20 15:51:13

A manhole cover is an inspection cover, self explanatory.
