It has been proved through the last census that lei ester has a minority white british population.
My mum and Dd4 and brother and partner all live within the bounds of this lock down.
DM has only been out once since the 23rd march and niw is stuck in again. She has seeen many people from her windows not related not social distancing and comibg and going as they wish. She lives in tje west of. The city and these are predominantly white people.
I grew up in belgrave and yes asians do have a more family centred way of living so there are often more vulnerable people in their house holds.
teetime the market has been and still is open.
Soulsby was having visits to his girlfriend all through lock down and we're supposed to listen to him.
This is a situation we have not lived through before so we arenall learning as we go along. I wouldn't want to be in government right now. Who does have the right answers?

Not sure how this can work. It’s a recommendation.
Just like I believe those 500,000 on Bournemouth beach received the same recommendation. Worked well.

Especially as the people who came to Bournemouth were not local residents. Same had driven from as far as Peterborough.
Personally I would like to see a travel limit so local residents are not afraid to go out.

It was reported that a lot of people flying in from Pakistan go straight into hospital here.

Presumably they are a mixture of those who live here and are returning, as well as those visiting their relatives here.

Either way it sounds as if they were ill before they started the journey here yet it’s been said on here that there are no health checks at our airports.

Will we ever see the end of this virus if situations like this are permitted to continue?

Well, Illte I can see that I'll be locked down until Christmas if flights start to increase from COVID hotspots anywhere in the world.

But never mind, eh, as long as your pc sensibilities are not offended.

How about the USA? Any flights coming in from that hotspot?

This is something I read on the King's College app website. I'm posting it here as think it's pertinent. The "Anna" is a research scientist from Nottingham:

^Several studies have also shown that people of BAME (black, Asian, and minority ethnic) descent are at increased risk of the deadly effects of COVID-19.

Ana believes that this may be due to differences in glucose metabolism between different ethnicities. For example, African Americans are 60 per cent more likely to be diagnosed with type 2 diabetes than non-Hispanic white people. And people from South Asian communities are up to 6 times more likely to have diabetes than the general population.^

Here's the link. It's way more interesting than this above:

covid.joinzoe.com/post/covid-blood-sugar-inflammation

Nottingham Uni has been working on the "sugary" coating of the coronavirus spikes, in co-operation with Oxford Uni.

Diabetes is a major risk factor for becoming seriously ill with Covid-19 (although not being infected in the first place). South Asians and some others have a genetic predisposition for T2 diabetes. It's still not 100% certain whether it's genetic or environmental - very probably both.

Non essential travel does not include driving to a country pub to meet up with family and friends. The cluster is in an area of Leicester which has a high proportion of Asian families and a temp. testing station was set up there last week as a result of an increase in test requests from the community. The Mayor was on the news last night talking about not being aware of the increase in numbers, that people could just leave the city and go anywhere they pleased either into the countryside or Birmingham . What he should be advacting is for people to stay at home but then he was caught visiting a lady friend on more than one occasion during the lock down. Its no wonder the people of Leicester think he's an idiot. Thankfully there are no reported increase in hospital admission yet.

I assume you do realise that the 50% being reported is actually only 30 people and there's no indication that they have anything to do with the flare up in Leicester.

Far more people from Spain, Italy and France (most coming back as tourists) have brought infection with them.

Logistically to put a cordon around Leicester to prevent all movement in and out would prove to be impossible unless the armed forces were to be deployed.

I would not have a problem with this, but I guess that I am in the minority?

I would agree with you. The only one to stop the spread at the moment is to isolate areas of high risk.

So it's all the fault of Asians, is it? Well, who'd have thought it?

Illte Tue 30-Jun-20 11:07:25

Me? I seem to be one of the few posters who is still staying at home and not galloping off to see friends and hug grandchildren!

I would have listed our borders and still would. Essential travel and quarantine is my stance.

But given that we're not doing that we need to be accurate about what is happening. Nothing suggests that the Leicester spike is anything to do with the Pakistani community.

At the moment they're not amongst those infected.

Illte Tue 30-Jun-20 11:07:58

Closed not listed

mcem Tue 30-Jun-20 11:12:48

So I assume no-one will be offended if Scotland's borders are closed so that we can continue our apparently successful approach.

Madbird37 Tue 30-Jun-20 11:13:43

grows tuff I didn't say it was the fault of 'the Asians' as you put it but just stating a fact the the spike is in the Spinney Hill area of Leicester which is home to any Asian families.

Madbird37 Tue 30-Jun-20 11:15:01

Sorry type error that should read growstuff

Smileless2012 Tue 30-Jun-20 11:17:30

I wont be offended mcem

The percentage of people showing symptoms in Barrow-in-Furness is almost as high as Leicester and has been consistently high for weeks. The 2011 census states 96.9% of Barrow's population as White British, so I wonder who can be blamed for the high infection rate.

Lancslass1 Tue 30-Jun-20 11:24:43

Boris can't win with some folk.
If he hadn't done anything he would be criticised .
He had to do it.

The mayor of Leicester agrees .
I would agree if I still lived there.
Will it happen in Liverpool (crowds celebrating their team's 'deserved 'success ?
Will it happen in Bournemouth or London where there were unthinking , selfish people gathering ?
Don't blame Boris.
Blame the idiots who don't listen to advice.

Good idea mcem
Unfortunately the Welsh border will be opened and the 5 mile restriction in travel lifted shortly.

Don't all rush at once

Illte; please can I reassure you that I didn't mention the flights due to racism of any kind on my part. Right from the start of the pandemic it was obvious that BAME people were disproportionately affected by covid, especially in the NHS but [as Maw pointed out] it seemed to be ignored for fear of it appearing racist/politically incorrect. It just reminded me of the way this country allowed Italians to enter from known hotspots right at the start of the pandemic and lessons did not appear to have been learned from it. Dr John Campbell is still convinced that BAME need to be given VitD supplements as a protection but this is still something being largely ignored in this country. It's beyond me that people from anywhere are still flying into the country without proper checks and I, too will be self isolating way into the future and not seeing my children or grandchildren, even outside in gardens. By doing so I hope to protect both myself and others. But we can't let political correctness get in the way of protecting people. Certain things have to be eliminated to get to the bottom of these outbreaks. Meat processing plants have been hotspots throughout the world; I do hope that they are being studied carefully.

MayBee70 Tue 30-Jun-20 11:40:38

Lanclass; is this the Boris who told people to go out and 'enjoy themselves' which is what, unfortunately, they now seem to be doing. The one who cited 'herd immunity' as a way of defeating the virus? The one who thinks gastric bands are the solution to the countries obesity problem even though it was his party that ignored Jamie Oliver's healthy eating campaign for schools.

Gwiz5 Tue 30-Jun-20 11:49:18

Seems to me that some people are just hell bent on doing what they want , sod everyone else who they might make sick and might die. We are not all safe , but herd immunity Also has its place. What I don’t understand is if you medical/scientific evidence to show without doubt that you are more at risk of death or complications why the fudge are you not taking steps to protect yourself , family ,community ??

There is no cure for idiocy, ignorance, complacency and self entitlement and selfishness.

5 schools closed in Leicester area last Tuesday.
www.leicestermercury.co.uk/news/leicester-news/5-leicester-schools-closed-after-4255473
Why has it taken so long to act?

MayBee70 Tue 30-Jun-20 11:58:36

Because this government is totally ineffective. And too busy with Brexit....[and still probably going along with Cummings herd immunity' plan....]

annodomini Tue 30-Jun-20 12:02:07

mcem. What about returning natives? Not that I'm thinking about it for the time being. hmm

LinkyPinky Tue 30-Jun-20 12:33:18

It’s not herd immunity unless having had the virus definitely confers immunity. That is not yet known. And viruses mutate, so immunity, if indeed it exists, is short-lived, as it is with colds and flu. There is already mutated form, according to today’s Washington Post. It’s Darwinism - survival of the fittest.
