A bra not for the easily offended it seems.

Callistemon Sat 15-Aug-20 14:22:34

I'm unfollowing this thread now as I'm finding it deeply upsetting
Laughing or virtually pointing at me will hopefully stop now

confused
I didn't realise this thread was about you.
I thought it was a debate about whether or not offence-taking, taken to this level, detracts from some very serious issues.

lemongrove Sat 15-Aug-20 14:19:11

Though for all I know, God does post on GN.

lemongrove Sat 15-Aug-20 14:18:28

?Good!

lemongrove Sat 15-Aug-20 14:18:04

God posts POGS and Chewbacca.

Callistemon Sat 15-Aug-20 14:17:39

Well said, Elegran.

People are still enslaved today and we should be trying to right these wrongs.
We can't undo what has been done in the past, only try to ensure it is not repeated.

Good post too janeainsworth.

Should we change the name of the colour Hooker's green in case it offends someone?

How else to describe the colour tobacco? Sienna?

A lot of firms are going to have to think again, then, as it's a very widely used and recognised description of a warm orangey brown colour.

Ah, another GNer who has to have lace on her bra ?welcome to the club Stans
I do buy the ‘nude’ colour now and then, to wear under white or very pale shades, so as not to show through. My DD says this is very old fashioned and I should just wear a red or purple bra or whatever ( I just nod sagely when she comes out with such wisdom.)

Chewbacca Sat 15-Aug-20 14:16:16

I'm sorry that someone has obviously reported your post Elegran, hence it's deletion. You raised a perfectly valid and justifiable comparison but it was obviously too much for some to comprehend. As janeainsworth said earlier the stifling of debate and free thought and speech is an increasing problem, especially when trying to communicate with those who can't see any one else's points of view except their own and therefore they want to close it down. The shame is on them, not on you.

POGS Sat 15-Aug-20 14:13:29

Elegran

The deletion of your thread sums a lot up about the ability for debate being seen through a prism of cancel culture which this hooha cannot escape from as part of the issue.

Stansgran Sat 15-Aug-20 14:09:09

But with lace. It has never occurred to me to look for a bra to match my skin colour. Is this a thing these days?

Stansgran Sat 15-Aug-20 14:07:29

When I was at school the correct colour for our uniform shoes was ox blood . I’ve always thought that was a weird choice for a name for the colour of leather. So now I would like a brown bra.

Elegran Sat 15-Aug-20 14:02:09

I hope that no poster on this thread finds your name upsetting Chewbacca???

Chewbacca Sat 15-Aug-20 12:57:21

It’s about the vindictive victimisation of an individual for daring to express an opinion which falls foul of some strands of popular thought, and about the stifling of debate and free thought and speech.
Like what happened to JK Rowling recently.

Excellent post janeainsworth; we're on a very slippery slope and the curtailment of open and free discussion is caused precisely by those who shout loudest about injustices and see "reasons to be offended" at every turn.

Chewbacca Sat 15-Aug-20 12:51:58

The world seems full of unexpected opportunities to be offended and those who spend a good deal of time looking for them Jane10.

janeainsworth Sat 15-Aug-20 12:51:24

Why is some one stating that tobacco wasn’t picked by free people ok and then my comment, that neither was cotton, is not ok. If tobacco (colour/substance) has racial connotations, then so does cotton!
Quite so, Pantglas. And rice. And sugar.
Starblaze ‘Cancel culture’ isn’t about racism and eliminating any cultural references to slavery.

Pantglas2 Sat 15-Aug-20 11:57:05

No Starblaze- you don’t get to choose what is racist and what isn’t and then swan off in high dudgeon!

Why is some one stating that tobacco wasn’t picked by free people ok and then my comment, that neither was cotton, is not ok. If tobacco (colour/substance) has racial connotations, then so does cotton!

Starblaze Sat 15-Aug-20 11:49:47

pollyperkins exactly.

People just don't get it and I feel like they are not getting it on purpose.

For example, naming a sports team Redskins (racial slur) is racist. Naming a helicopter an Apache (a tribe) is not.

People are so worried about "cancel culture" but they just don't get that some culture was a bit racist and actually we don't have to lose anything, just stop being racist about it.

Its also a huge insult to people that they might think words like cotton or black or some of the examples in deleted comments on this thread is wrong. It's very ignorant to suggest they would. It's also belittling a serious issue.

Anyway I'm unfollowing this thread now as I find it deeply upsetting.

pollyperkins Sat 15-Aug-20 11:33:28

I think the point is that tobacco has negative connotations. Probably ‘black bra’ would be fine, as simply descriptive.
I think anything with a negative association eg giving a black mark, or putting someone in your black book is potentially offensive. But in my opinion blackboard & black coffee are ok. After all we have whiteboards these days, and white coffee.

Pantglas2 Sat 15-Aug-20 10:29:32

Ha ha Lemongrove! Joking aside, it brought the following to mind

‘First they came for.....’.(choose any group)

Callistemon Sat 15-Aug-20 09:32:46

I just wish they stocked the ones which I've been buying for years!

There are lots of complaints but there's probably no demand for them hmm

lemongrove Sat 15-Aug-20 09:28:24

Pantglas2

I recently purchased two white cotton rich bras from Marks.....given the hoo-ha, should I be on the ducking stool?

Yes, you certainly should!
White/rich/cotton all in the same sentence.Shame on you.?

Smileless2012 Sat 15-Aug-20 09:17:27

FarNorth re your post yesterday @ 14.00 I don't find the trivialization of racism trivial.

Starblaze Fri 14-Aug-20 20:26:29

Ah well, I cannot comment on that, ive tried their bra fitting and bra's, first woman left me very uncomfortable, second was a star. Everything in life depends on who quite often and some just don't care

Callistemon Fri 14-Aug-20 20:22:16

vegansrock

But if M and S had given it any thought they might realise tobacco is not a great product to associate a brand with.

No, it's not.
