An assumption is being made, both by the woman who complained and by those who have written in support of her, that the brown bras were intended to be worn only by women who have brown skin.
If that were the case, then calling the colour after a plant which in the past had connections with slavery could be considered offensive.
But brown bras aren’t exclusively worn or marketed to women (or men for that matter) with brown skin.
Nor are women with brown skin compelled to wear a bra whose colour they take exception to, or indeed any bra at all.
I have in my personal bra collection ivory coloured bras, nude bras, deep pink bras, a burgundy coloured bra, a teal blue bra, a slate gray bra, and several black bras. I don’t at the moment have a brown bra, but that’s only because my favourite brand doesn’t stock them.
Naturally I have matching knickers.
I’m sure that offence could be taken if necessary about any of those colours being used for items of underwear, if one was really determined.
