Scottish government Covid briefings on the BBC

A thread on another topic kept straying into people's opinions about the Scottish Government's Covid briefings being dropped from the BBC schedules. It seemed to raise a lot of comment so I thought I'd start a new thread.

So, what does everyone think? Feel free to diverge into what you think of NS's performance smile Do you think the WM government should have more briefings?

Marydoll fed up as I am with SNP's mismanagement of so many important issues here in Scotland, my objection to her unnecessary constant appearances on TV is that it seems impossible for people to understand that there are other, less partisan ways for relevant information to be shared.
We will not agree on this.

Marydoll Sat 12-Sept-20 13:10:27

Of course we won't Jane, but will hopefully respect each other's views.

The most important issue for me presently, is that eventually we will beat this virus.
It will be a very long journey and I hope I get to the end unscathed.

How delightfully North Korean/Russian/Belarusian/English

Oh Alegias the term sheeple has been used a number of times on GN to describe those who don’t agree with the Nationalist agenda. I’m simply using their term in reverse.

I’m still baffled as to why people think NS has done a good job when she hasn’t, rather like her government’s dismal record in health, education and the economy.

No wonder Shetland is considering independence for themselves.

Alegrias Sat 12-Sept-20 13:31:52

SueDonim I'm going to drop the discussion about NS/SNP etc, I'm going to learn from the good advice of Jane10 and Marydoll who say that there are things we will not agree on.

But the sheeple term is unforgiveable. Its insulting and intended to imply that the person you are addressing is not capable of understanding, is foolish and easily led. It compares people to sheep because they don't agree with what you say. If you weren't aware of the connotations of this insult, maybe think about it now and don't use it again? Just because others use it doesn't make it acceptable.

Marydoll Sat 12-Sept-20 13:56:38

Good decision, Alegrias.
We can agree to disagree, with insulting each other.

I don’t believe not paying the tv license is a nonsense let’s take a stand if we’ve got an opinion at all. At least that cash will go into my pocket and not the high end salaries which the BBC pay out angry

varian Sat 12-Sept-20 17:37:53

In spite of the fact that the BBC has been over recent years, blatantly pro-Tory and pro-Brexit, I still think that we need the BBC.

SueDonim Sat 12-Sept-20 18:24:19

Thanks for the lecture, Alegias. Norty step for me, unless I support the SNP. ?

Jane10 Sat 12-Sept-20 18:28:54

Don't worry SueDonim we'll never be daft enough to support SNP. We can move to Shetland after they get their independence or the Borders and Dumfries and Galloway too now I hear. There won't be much of Scotland left for them.

SueDonim Sat 12-Sept-20 18:32:50

Hahaha, Jane10! My dd is thinking of declaring herself her own private breakaway state within Scotland! grin

I.m so excited (not) to learn that the briefings are to be replaced by - wait for it - Repeats of Bargain Hunt. That will surely help to control the virus, while giving solace to Car Booters who have been deprived of their special interest due to Lockdown.

paddyanne Sat 12-Sept-20 18:44:45

Neither Sheltland nor Orkney are considering Independence ,this is just regurgitated nonsense from 2014 In fact recent polls show a swing to SNP for next years vote...with The Liar Carmichael losing his seat
.Thought your daughter was leaving once she had finished her FREE education SD Wasn't that what you said a couple of years ago..."all heading back to the Home Counties" ,Enjoy Boris' Government when you get there ,then you'll truly know a shambles when you see it !

varian Sat 12-Sept-20 18:56:34

Orkney and Shetland are far more likely to consider UDI from Scotland than they would ever be likely to vote SNP.

The SNP threw all their resources and money behind attacking popular Liberal Democrat MP Alistair Carmichael at the last election and still ended up a miserable 10% behind.

NS is doing her best in a difficult situation. I’m not sure though that broadcasting to her country 5 nights a week is essential.

I have no axe to grind but am of the opinion that they are starting to seem political rather than public health related.

Callistemon Sat 12-Sept-20 20:03:46

I am inclined to agree although our "kindly headmaster" Mark Drakeford does not seem to make any political capital out of this situation.

SueDonim Sat 12-Sept-20 20:11:17

The news about Shetland is Thurday’s news, not from 2014. uk.news.yahoo.com/shetland-council-votes-overwhelmingly-to-explore-independence-from-scotland-131214602.html

I have more than one daughter, Paddyanne and yes, she’s taken her skills, acquired for free, down to England, where she’s being paid more and taxed less.

I am Scottish and I am so angry that, yesterday, I signed a petition against the BBC action. The report states that the BBC are withdrawing coverage of the First Minister's briefings after "pressure from the Tories". And that would be about right. Boris Johnston's new lap dog in Scotland, Douglas Ross, most likely can't stand seeing Nicola Sturgeon speaking to us every day and giving us the facts and announcing and changes in the rules and regulations re Covid-19. We wouldn't know the rules we have to live under if we were depending on BBC News which reports these matters as it relates to England not us. The Westminster government has made such a hash of their communications with the public that they probably hope they won't look so bad if they remove our First Minister from TV screens. Not only do we hear from our First Minister but also from our Medical, Clinical and Nursing Directors and so all our top people are willing to give us the information we need "straight from the horses mouth" and not from leaks, memos and underlings. Roll on next year's election.

varian Sat 12-Sept-20 20:27:04

No-one should be surprised that the Brexit Broadcasting Corporation takes its orders from the Tories. They always have. Why else would they have so many Tories like Laura Kuenssberg, Andrew Neil and Nick Robinson employed as political commentators?

Callistemon Sat 12-Sept-20 20:28:25

Roll on next year's election.

Roll on the next Scottish independence referendum.

Elizabeth1 Sun 13-Sept-20 08:06:11

I agree wholeheartedly with you * jayt* these professionals are very good at putting their point over clear and concise there’s no fumbling going on there

Elizabeth1 Sun 13-Sept-20 08:08:50

Now why didn’t jayte come up bold in my first reply silly me I must have made a space between the * and the name not much to worry about if that’s all-it is me I’m pedantic

Urmstongran Sun 13-Sept-20 08:40:13

You jest varian surely?

What about Naga Munchetty, Andrew Marr and can any of us ever forget the shocked look on David Dimbleby’s face as the referendum results confirmed a Brexit win at 5am - after most Remainers had gone to bed thinking staying in the EU was in the bag?
?

Urmstongran Sun 13-Sept-20 09:03:52

Just been reading that Alex Salmond is seriously thinking of setting up a breakaway party of his own. That will split SNP supporters somewhat and dent NS’s grip next May if he does.

That election might be especially interesting!

What do the Scottish grans think?
