The parallels are that the same people behind Johnson and the leave campaign were also behind Trumps election campaign. Bannon, Farage etc. And used the campaign to divide the country, their main tool being nationalism and xenophobia. You can be nationalistic without being racist but that didn’t suit their purpose. Those of us that marched peacefully against brexit were attacked both verbally and physically at times, something that was dismissed at the time.

Fox News has been the biggest supporter of Trump.

Heard it said that if Mr Trump was ousted immediately his deputy would take over and, using the inexplicable pardoning rule, might just select Mr Trump for the privilege. If that were so, I'd rather sit out the next two weeks albeit with much trepidation.

It has been obvious for a long time that Trump is deranged. It might just be the beginning of Alzheimers. Why haven't they noticed this in America? Why has he not been subjected to some sort of psychiatric treatment? I suspect it will not be long before this happens.

I can remember when holidaying one year in Florida my husband was doing 35mph on a 30mph road which was completely empty of traffic (yes I know it was wrong!). He was stopped by the police and treated like a criminal. So why then hasn't Trump, who would have appeared to incited all this with the rhetoric that spews from his mouth, with the riots resulting in the death of 5 people, not been arrested. It would appear the he is above the law as I thinks that if it were "Mr Average America' he would have long since been arrested.

I am surprised to hear, when interviewed, a couple of American spokespersons saying that although they did agree that Trump incited violence, nothing should be done at the moment (charge him, etc), as his supporters would be even more inflamed! The man is deranged, and hell-bent on revenge, a very dangerous combination. If nothing is done to contain him, God knows what he has in mind for his last days in office- chilling.

It's time that incitement became a serious criminal offence. Trump is guilty, hate preachers are guilty, and if they felt the full weight of law for inciting others to violence they might, just might, think twice. Currently it is an offence under common law only. This time last year would any of us have believed where we would be today, and what we would be reading in the newspapers? America's situation is like a disaster movie right now - ordinary people must be so afraid.

I always thought that Trump would make waves and refuse to go but never in my wildest nightmares did I expect this!

I agree that he should be arrested and put away before he can do any more damage. Glad to see that Twitter has cancelled his account.

What worries me is that one of his mad supporters might try to assassinate Biden. Wouldn't put it past them.

Maidmarion my thoughts too - the Inauguration will be another flash point for Trump's fanatics. Presumably his security team/police will be discussing this very topic today. Pity if it has to be held with no audience, but small price to pay to avoid President Biden or Kamala Harris being assassinated. What a dreadful place America is at the moment. So sad.

I saw on tv the other day when Obama totally humiliated Trump about Trump questioning his birth certificate. I think that event triggered something in Trumps brain and he was prepared to do anything to get revenge. I remember seeing from afar the war in Czechoslovakia and thinking to myself how easily society can break down in a supposedly civilised country.

My daughter, who lives in USA, said last night that she is extremely worried that if Biden is inaugurated publicly there’s a huge chance someone will try to assassinate him. Look at the numbers of guns carried during the riot, not to mention pipe bombs...!!!! Terrifying ....

Obama suffered from what could be seen as a fatal flaw in the US constitution which allows for the head of the Executive (the President) to be elected without their party having a majority in the Legislature (Congress & the Senate). So their proposed reforming legislation is mostly voted down.

Biden doesn't have that problem. It'll be interesting to see how he does. Though, as Americans are very right wing in general, I'm not hopeful of anything radical.

Thing is - these divisions in American society didn’t start the moment Trump was elected - they’ve been there for ever. yes he hasn’t helped, but locking him up & throwing away the key will not make everything wonderful.

The Republican leaders should invoke the 25th Amendment before he does any more damage. They are the ones who have enabled and supported his damaging actions and words. Thanks to their silence almost half a million americans are dead because they didn't contradict that man's irresponsible dismissal of the illness.Thanks to their self serving ambition there is an insurrection because they did not speak out to contradict Trump's lies about a stolen election. The death toll from yesterday is four, only it won't end there. Think of all the covid transmission that will have occurred to police officers and others just trying to do their jobs from Trump supporters who were shamed into not wearing masks by Trump and his toadies. I hope they take their shame and guilt with them to their graves.

I feel afraid for the inauguration of President Biden. So many weapons have now been delivered by this invasion that perhaps the Capital will be destroyed on that day by rocket launchers, machine guns, various grenades or dropped by drones. How awful, what a mass delusion.

It looks unlikely but for the safety of the world, I hope Trump's cabinet will use the constitution to remove him from office - apparently they do have that power. It may prevent him from sending missiles to the middle East. This is a time when we hope elected representatives in the US will step forward to protect democracy and peace. Have courage now! I doubt that they read GN! But I wish they would heed what is being said here.
