Won’t do a virtual debate - should be empty chaired. Good news

Sorry, but I'll pass on this one.

Anyone seen Trump introduce Farage as the most important politician in Europe - and Farage pouring ridiculous praise on Trump, with supporters- who haven't got a scoobidoo on who he is, going hysterical. Bucket- please.

The US Supreme Court dealt a blow to Donald Trump’s campaign on Wednesday by granting North Carolina an extended deadline to count mail-in ballots, giving the state until 12 November to calculate its total and overriding Republican objections in a win for state Democrats who are thought to be more likely to vote by post.

Yes this was what my thread “wish I hadn’t seen that” was about. Horrendous ! Toe curling, nauseating.

"Regardless of the outcome of the United States’ election, democracy as we know it is already imperiled. However, it is not too late to turn the tide.

Whether Donald J. Trump is a fascist, a post-fascist populist, an autocrat, or just a bumbling opportunist, the danger to democracy did not arrive with his presidency and goes well beyond November 3rd, 2020.

While democracy appeared to be flourishing everywhere in the years following the end of the Cold War, today it seems to be withering or in full-scale collapse globally. As scholars of twentieth century authoritarian populism, fascism, and political extremism, we believe that unless we take immediate action, democracy as we know it will continue in its frightening regression, irrespective of who wins the American presidency in early November."

More damning information about Trump's very shady dealings come out

A historian called Mark Mazower has written about the 20thC. He suggests that democracy was/is not a done deal. I studied it about 4 years ago and felt rather sceptical.

How times have changed.

Trump is planning to declare himself the winner on Tuesday night before all the results are in and if he looks to be ahead, which early on he will be as the a Trump supporting votes come in first.

Expect a complete level of chaos If Trump loses.

I can’t wait for this to be all over. I don’t like either of the candidates and if I were American I don’t think I’d bother to vote.

Blimey! People have died for the right to vote.

maddyone Mon 02-Nov-20 13:30:14

That’s what’s so sad Whitewave. I agree. I was brought up having it drummed into to me that I should, as a female, always vote, because women died for my vote. You are so right Whitewave and I feel it’s not a great position to be in. I do normally vote, but thankfully I don’t have to worry about who to vote for in America as I’m not American. Maybe that’s why I felt able to say I don’t think I’d vote if I lived in America.
Anyway, rest assured, I do normally vote in British elections.

maddyone Mon 02-Nov-20 13:32:55

The reason I said I can’t wait for it to be over is that I’m a tad fed up of seeing/hearing about it, when there are momentous events happening here in the UK. I realise that whoever wins (I expect it to be Biden) will affect Britain.

Allan Lichtman (13 Keys) is convinced that Trump won't win-

Nate Silver (fivethirtyeight) gives Trump a 10% chance of winning-

Other models follow the 10%-

rosecarmel Mon 02-Nov-20 20:41:34

Biden added a last minute stop in OH to his schedule- The remainder of his day will be spent in PA-

Maine and Nebraska are permitted to split their electoral college, the rest are winner take all-

MaizieD Tue 03-Nov-20 00:10:07

@rosecarmel

We're hearing a lot about the possibility of violence, even civil war, if Trump loses. We've seen footage of civil disturbances in some places. But the US is a huge place, though. Is this a relatively isolated possibility or is a common fear in all the states?

rosecarmel Tue 03-Nov-20 02:37:10

MaizieD, I just got off the phone with one of my children and we were discussing exactly that- Together we came to the conclusion that perhaps something could go down in Portland, Oregon-

Despite all the talk of civil war or unrest, we all work together and shop together day in and day out without issue-

It's a common/shared fear, but has been long before Trump came along- And it's not the first time guns sold out during an election year-

However, anything is possible-

Oopsminty Tue 03-Nov-20 04:56:10

The thing is this won't be decided today. Ot tomorrow. Or next week even.

It can take weeks for some results to be counted.

It's doubtful either will concede

So it could be months.

Whitewavemark2 Tue 03-Nov-20 08:20:51

Oh I don’t know Trump reckons he will be declaring this evening.

He wants all the votes not counted to be binned.

Whitewavemark2 Tue 03-Nov-20 08:29:39

This is such an important election for the U.K. and we can’t vote☹️

Should Trump truly lose and refuse to concede it could be a good thing- The more effort and energy he puts into throwing a tantrum the less energy and interest he will put into getting anything else done on his watch-
