Won’t do a virtual debate - should be empty chaired. Good news

I too would like to see Trump barred from ever taking office again but time is short.

It seems that the far right have infiltrated the Republican Party, just as UKIP members infiltrated the Conservative Party here, driving it further to the right.

Unfortunately it is very unlikely that enough Cabinet members plus Pence will press for the 25th amendment and it would be the "old" Senate who would have to give a two-thirds majority vote in favour of impeaching him. I don't think enough Republican senators would change their minds, though it would be worth a try.

This sorry saga has shown that the American system needs radical reform - for example, to just let the Presidential election results go forward without requiring the ceremonial endorsement of both Houses and another look should be taken at the abuse of Presidential pardons as Trump will be dishing them out like confetti to all his corrupt friends as well as himself.

The saving grace was that when Trump found out that Pence wouldn't overrule the vote of both Houses to endorse the election results he was prevented from sacking him and putting in his own puppet Vice President because Pence was elected and together with Trump on the election ticket.

What we can look forward to is the state of New York pursuing him or his companies for tax fraud and numerous other lawsuits against him that could not be taken forward while he was president.

So if Melania wants to secure her own financial future she should start divorce proceedings ASAP.

There’s a video doing the rounds on Twitter of the Trumps celebrating the “invasion” watching live on TV. I hope its fake news. If not it’s really scary.

Even if it is a fake it won’t be far from the truth. Trump, his two older sons, older daughter and son-in-law will do anything at all to stay on the gravy train, the Trump organisation has made tens of millions of dollars during the last four years. If anybody thinks Trump’s latest words condemning those who invaded the Capitol are sincere they haven’t been paying attention for the past few years, it’s all part of the game he’s been playing and his desire to save his skin.

Trump must not be allowed to take public office again and unless he is impeached it will happen within the next four years. Even if he doesn’t take public office somebody will offer him and his family some sort of media presence, even a reality show The Trump Family. Somebody who knows him well was interviewed and said before the election he told Trump if he lost he would become the biggest media star in history. The interviewer asked him if he still would after what has happened and he replied that it is still likely. Being banned from Twitter has made no difference as he is using the Twitter of somebody described as ‘a media guru’ who is in fact hIs ex golf caddy, he has moderated his Tweets but the real Donald Trump will emerge after he leaves The White House. There are numerous Trump supporting FaceBook Groups spouting conspiracy theories and his supporters are just blind to the truth. I saw two elderly ladies interviewed on BBC news yesterday, they were outside The Capitol the Interviewer asked them want they thought about what was going on and they replied that it was great. When the interviewer pointed out that there had been four people killed they still claimed there had been no violence, the response ‘fake news’ obviously deeply embedded in their brains.

It goes without saying that anyone at all would be better than DT though!

I suppose the thread is getting rather long now.

Life's too short Callistemon.

It's sort of fake news, in that the video is of Trump and his entourage watching people arriving for his rally.

By the time the storming of the Capitol was happening Trump was back in the White House. The WH is a lot smarter than the obviously temporary structure featured in the video.

I have absolutely no doubt that he would have been watching his storm troops, but I doubt if any video of that would emerge...

Whitewave, over the course of the last 4 years the Republicans marched behind the president in lockstep. They are the guilty party. From federal to village representative. They fracture and mend.

Lindsey Graham, a Republican, said he wanted no part of the insurgence. But that doesn't mean he doesn't want any part of his party. What he's really saying is that he doesn't want to be held accountable for supporting the president who not only supported those that breached the Capitol but professed his love for them during his brief speech while they occupied the building.

Pence chose not to bend to the presidents wishes. But only at the 11th hour. Less than 2 weeks before Biden's inauguration. Prior to that he was Trump's shadow puppet. No different than the rest of the Republicans.

They showed up with MAGA hats, their grampas, banners, bats, tats and buffalo horns. They are the new face of the Republican party. Quite a departure from the Tea Party facelift they got in 2009 ..

Excellent
Also seen on FB:
"I'm particularly loving the Atlantic Ocean right now"

I think everyone is frantically distancing themselves right now, already embracing the Biden administration.

Regarding those resigning, it's like watching sailors staging a mutiny just 2 cubits from the dock after 4 years at sea.

While the Capitol was under siege a message was sent from the campaign fundraising site of Republican senator Ted Cruz:

"Ted Cruz here. I'm leading the fight to reject electors from key states unless there is an emergency audit of the election results. Will you stand with me?"

The message was sent at 3:33PM and was discovered by Democratic representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. She's calling for his resignation.

This is far from over.

No I don’t believe it is. What I’m hoping is that the Republican Party splits between the anti-democrats and those prepared to uphold the constitution.

Those not prepared to accept that there is another way to rule other than the way they want must be defeated.

These anti-democrats exist in every democratic country, but usually in a small minority, but we have seen how they have grown in this form of populist nationalist political culture that we see today.

It isn’t as highland says over. Biden has a real fight on his hands.

Luckygirl Fri 08-Jan-21 09:40:35

I am torn between wanting DT to be impeached or got rid of under Amendment 25 so as to prevent him from standing again, and not wanting him to become a martyr and fuel his supporters wrath.

The point is even we had been told by an American poster that something was going to happen, along the lines that “you ain’t seen nothing yet”

So either America has the most ineffective security service ever (which I don’t believe) or they were complicate. I can’t see that there is an6 other explanation.

Whitewavemark2 Fri 08-Jan-21 09:19:35

I don’t see how on earth they are going to mend what is there in stark relief, which is the way the police react to the white mob and the black protesters.

It was absolutely startling. I even watched as a policeman helped a women down the steps, if that had been a black women he would have pushed her, well she wouldn’t have got near the steps. It was appalling.

Iam64 Fri 08-Jan-21 09:03:18

NoI don't think its odd sadly, hylandsivy. Trump has constantly talked about the need to support the 'boys in blue' and the military. Not including any black or hispanic in his umbrella support I'm sure. His appeal is to the extreme right.

hylandsivy Fri 08-Jan-21 08:59:07

And T. For thief. How long before they take inventory of everything that was stolen? Government property and personal?

Is it odd that among those that participated in the breach were off duty police and members of the military?

No Republican has suddenly discovered they've a conscience. They do understand the damage they've done by supporting Trump. In no way, shape or form are they turning over a new leaf. They are attempting to save face but failing miserably. Their resignations this late in the game are shady at best.

What occurred at the Capitol didn't suddenly erupt. What was witnessed is a hundreds of years old festering infection that the government has done no more than slap a band aid on one administration after the next.

Both parties have been largely absent during this pandemic. That and their centuries old history of neglect left them vulnerable and open to attack.

Out of the majority of white, male insurgents a woman was shot in the neck and killed since there was no person of color there to target-

Mea culpa.

They have a large S written on their chests and this should never be forgotten.

Now, I’m not sure about this so am happy to be told I’m wrong but I always thought that it was Blair and Clinton working together that helped to bring about peace in Ireland. Along, of course, with many other people.

America were responsible as much as the U.K. for bringing about peace in Ireland, that is why they were so appalled at Johnson’s government attempt at breaking the law.

Bidens speech wow!

Who was it said they thought he was passed it? lemon? There isn’t a single member of the government who give such a speech.

Yes I found it very moving. I don’t know about the speech he made yesterday but the one he made after the result of the election was completely without autocue. His years of experience in politics are evident.
