Jeremy Corbyn suspended from Labour Party

Starmer has shown that he, and those around him, have complete contempt for all those on the left of the party. Therefore those having left views are leaving the party in very large numbers every month.

At present, there is no alternative party for those people to join and therefore the formation of a new party of the left is the only alternative. That may mean it will split the left of centre vote in this country, but, that cannot be blamed on those who were pushed into a position of having no political party which accommodates their views.

If anyone wishes to point the finger at who has brought this about, look no further than Starmer and the Tory lites that surround him. He has turned out to be the worst leader the Labour Party has ever had in its very long history.

Tories forever ... simple. And certainly a disaster.

Oldtimer60 you can definitely join Unite community which welcomes retired people. It probably depends where you live, but my local branch is quite active. Membership also means you get a vote as an affiliate in any leadership election. Howard Bennet is looking set to take over when McCluskey retires

Many thanks bmacca as following your post I emailed the Unite Union via there website and explained my position. Within two hours I received a return email from the secretary of the retired member's branch in my area. Apparently they hold regular monthly meetings, online at present, and the retired members are represented at every level throughout the union. So having paid a three month subscription upfront I am now signed up and even will be able to vote in the forthcoming General Secretary and National Executive elections.

I am not going to pay what they call the political levy as that would go to Starmer's Labour Party and I feel I have paid to much for too long to the to finish up with a leader like him. I will pay the levy if the Unite Union stops funding Labour, but that may well be decided by whoever is elected General Secretary it would seem from all the bumf that has been coming from Unite in the last few hours.

No Fennel....much more likely that he has his sights on Boris Johnson’s job in four years time, which is exactly the right thing to be doing.

Thanks for that Grany. Would any of the people who have posted their support for Starmer like to tell us what they thought of it? I know I am biased so I'm willing to listen if you can explain why Howard Beckett isn't right.
I do wonder Starmer is clever, so why is he taking this stance? It would be so much easier to admit he had mistakenly judged the issue and looking at the EHRC report he has decided free speech is important and so he restores the whip.

I have resigned my membership of the Labour Party by email to our District Party Secretary, but have been told that my subscription has been paid until February so they will maintain my membership until then. I have seen in this thread however mention of the broader or wider labour movement and affiliate organisations but I do not understand fully what it all means.

Can people just join these organisations as being separate or different membership to the Labour party? I am retired and not working, so could I join something like the Unite Union, do they accept retired people into their ranks, does anybody know.

If not, is there an organisation that represents and speaks up for people with left wing views outside of the Labour Party. If anybody could post information and advice I would be very grateful. I am sure there are many such as myself that are leaving the Labour Party but would still wish to maintain activity in politics.

Someone in my anti brexit group blanked me because she was also a member of extinction rebellion and I said my family, pre COVID, wanted to do lots of travelling which involved using planes. Even though we do pretty much everything else we can to protect the environment. I think I just want to live in the middle of nowhere with my dog and just read books.

I really can't see what it's got to do with it but I was a confirmed remainer. Brexit is yesterdays news anyway.

I highly doubt that trisher because the pro-European businesses will back it, and there are plenty of them.

And the centrist party will fold because it will have no funding.

They will - the problem will be that the party won’t be electable because there just aren’t the number of left wing supporters in the UK to enable that to happen.

Oldtimer60 of course there will be a new left wing party and you will be able to uphold your principles, but with Starmer in charge the centrist view of the majority will prevail, and the centrist right will join them because they can’t stomach the right wing policies the current government is pursuing. It’s actually really exciting times.

But following the launch of a new party all with left views will have a choice when it come to the ballot box. Perhaps more importantly those who join the new party will be able, within the party, to discuss all that is going on.
