Who will be left in the Labour Party?

MayBee70 but what those on the left really fear is an administration like Blair's which tinkers a little but does nothing to really change anything, which in effect is so similar to the Tories it is difficult to see the difference sometimes. They think that it is those policies which ultimately are responsible for the very real poverty in the UK now and only a radical change can stop that happening again. It's possible to see in Blair's failures to build social housing, to support the unions and repeal anti-union legislation, his acceptance of zero-hours contracts and his falure to introduce real socialst policies the roots of today's poverty. And the left wing want to stop that and change things.

I’ve never said that the influence of the left should be eliminated. I agree with good, socialist principles. Wouldn’t support the party if that wasn’t the case. What I don’t want the extreme left of the party to do is constantly undermine a new party leader and shadow cabinet that are holding this government to account far more than the previous leader did in the whole time he held that position. And acknowledge the fact that the new leader that the left are trying so hard to get rid of is actually electable. And you can’t achieve anything if you can’t get elected.

I was pleased to see that Keir Starmer thinks it is appalling that UNICEF is feeding children in our country. This is the sort of issue he should be highlighting.

Retiredwell, if, as you seem to indicate quite strongly, and you do give the impression of being in the 'know' about these matters, that this pressure group is going to emerge as a new political party exclusively for the left of the party who were in the Corbyn court, then I personally believe they should come clean about that now. It does matter to people whether they are signing up for a political party or a pressure group. I would have preferred to see this launch done, without having to sign up, on a platform such as YouTube where anyone could listen to it. I don't like my data out there until I know it is an organisation I want to be associated with. Many members in the Party are to the left, but not in the Corbyn mould. I expect many of those will remain in the Labour Party.
It is quite usual, with their connections and influence, for retired leaders to take on projects but they don't normally try to replace their own Party. If the real purpose is a new party they should have the guts to nail their colours to the mast from the very start.

Ever since Starmer's election as leader we have seen posts on this forum and throughout social media stating that the influence of left needs to be eliminated from the Labour Party. Now through the startup of the Peace & Justice project, the left in the Labour Party will have a new rallying point to place their views.

Should it be that Peace & Justice becomes a full-blown political party in Britain those of the left will undoubtedly transfer their energies to that organisation along with the trade unions affiliations.

Surely Starmer and all who support him will have all they could wish for in having the present Labour Party entirely in the hands of the right and through that draw in financial donations from commercial interests and very wealthy private people.

However, throughout social media since the announcement of the formation of Peace & Justice, there are numerous posts and tweets downplaying and regretting the formation when it would be expected that the right in the Labour Party would have been encouraging such a move. The right in the party will have achieved their wish with a successful launch in seeing the departure of left and trade union influence in the Labour Party.

Therefore I cannot understand the reluctance of seeing the formation of Peace & Justice by those of the right in the Labour Party and the lack of enthusiasm to see it succeed.

We can talk to groups without calling them friend's can't we. No one can accuse Jeremy Corbyn of being against peace or a terrorist, though you can accuse him of being a poor leader.

Perhaps he was referring to the terrorist wings of the organisations Annie. And anyway that's all the better, if you only talk to people you consider your friends you can never reach a compromise, and peace always involves compromise.

Yet he said he was wrong to call Hamas and Hezbollah his friends.

Exactly Annie the political wings of all of those organisations have developed and grown. They brought peace to N. Ireland and they have the potential to bring peace to Palestine. By talking to them peace comes one step closer.

lemon I don't think you can accuse Corbyn of inactivity or lack of involvement in Peace activism. He has a long history of talking to those who are sometimes excluded from negotiations. Hence 2 Peace prizes

It looks exactly like the sort of thing that Corbyn enjoys, am guessing there will be lots of earnest discussions and a committee or two and that nothing much of a practical nature will ever be done before it quietly folds.

Thank you Grany and prestbury for taking the time to clear up those issues. I take it the donations, at this stage, would be voluntary and not part of the process of joining the launch. All will be revealed in the New Year.

I should add, with the above link that if you were to go through the donate process (without actually completing it) it also asks you to signify if you are a tax payer so that additional tax relief can be gained.

No Devorgilla paid no subscription just signed up to the Peace and Justice project launch as has thousands of others too.

Grany on page 9 states that she has joined but does not indicate whether a subscription was required. Perhaps she could shed light on that side.
Perhaps Lisa Nandy knows it is a new political party and is planning to stand for them, or perhaps she is unaware that is its purpose, in which case she should, for the time being, imo, err on the side of caution.
If it is to be an umbrella organisation worldwide to forward the course of peace and justice then there is merit in that. There is clearly much to be achieved.

Devorgilla, there is much I can agree with in your above post. Regarding funding, you may recall that Len McCluskey a few weeks back informed the Labour Party General Secretary that the Unite Union was to reduce its financial support to the party by 10% in the current financial year. He added that the reduction had been agreed within the Unite General Executive Committee and finances saved would be put towards new political initiatives brought forward.

Therefore it is probable that Peace & Justice have received that funding to initiate its startup and finance the organisation until its status and structures are finalised prior to the full launch on 17th of January. I have not seen the new organisation calling for additional donations publicly, but others may have different information.

However, there is obviously "much water to flow under the bridge" between now and the middle of January" with many individuals and organisations to take up their stance on the developments brought about.

As I side matter, I read that Lisa Nandy has stated she will be backing Peace & Justice. Could she be about to desert Starmer or just backing both horses?????

Retiredwell, I think it is not entirely honest to encourage people to join up or subscribe to the Corbyn Project, currently referred to as the Peace and Justice Movement, before it is decided whether it is a new political party or not. You can't belong to two political parties at the same time as there is a conflict of interests. People who wanted to stand for Council or Parliament who joined this would then be excluded from standing for Labour, and rightly so. Better for this new enterprise to sort itself out first before asking for donations via subscribers. Organisations which currently affiliate to Labour should have all the information before deciding whether they affiliate to this new one or not. It is a case of 'watch this space' I feel.

From all I have read, it has yet to be decided if peace the Peace & Justice movement is to be a pressure and lobbying organisation or a full British political party. Jeremy Corbyn announced the startup of the movement this week and between that event and the 17th of January it's basic status, structures and core policies will, without doubt, be formulated.

Many organisations who at present affiliate to the Parliamentary Labour Party will prior to that date have to decide their approach to the new movement which will also encompass the TUC who have been at the core of support for the PLP within the wider Labour movement in Britain since the party came into being.

At this time many would hope I am sure that Keir Starmer will contemplate how he has led the party since his election as leader and take action to change and try and create some unity within the organisation. Should he not change tack it will quickly come about that matters will develop that are beyond his control or even influence, which will be disastrous for the present Labour Party.
