It doesn’t matter what Labour do they can’t influence anything, it’s highly unlikely that the Tories will get 40+ rebel, although you can never say never. Johnson will be replaced fairly soon whatever the outcome he has been a millstone far too long already

I think the ERG are likely to rebel if there is a tiniest hint of compromise and if Labour voted against it would fall I think as there are about 80 ERG headbangers.

Your concern for the French Fishermen is touching, don’t worry their government will compensate them - eventually. Let them create havoc for a few weeks, then pay them off, French hauliers too probably

No support for no deal

Just been listening to John Redwood on SKY news (Adam Boulton wasn’t a happy bunny having to listen to listen to him - he nearly spontaneously combusted especially when Redwood asked him to stop interrupting (!) and let him answer the question - whilst pointing out that the opinions were already 2:1 - only him for Brexit - the tie straightener from Brussels and some high up bloke in the commerce industry were both pro-Eu). Actually Boulton apologised to Redwood at the end of the interviews (somebody in the control centre must have said something into his ear piece!).

Anyway I loved that Redwood was so on top of his facts! Pointed out that the biggest no-no for the EU was the level playing field and the fact that we might choose to do things differently (nimble vaccine roll out anybody?). He said look how it’s okay for the EU to prop up EU airlines etc. when we don’t. Our labour standards are superior, ditto animal welfare.

Look when we joined he said. Fishing had to be less for us, more for the EU. look at industries, less for us tenders out to EU and always more for them. The guy from Brussels looked a bit uncomfortable by this stage, more tie straightening ...

What is the point said Redwood of being hobbled to EU practices when we can once again choose to do things our way?

It is your tendency to make your posts personal that I find silly, it does nothing to further the argument, and yes I do dismiss those sort of posts as not being worth taking part in.

Provide me with evidence that I am incorrect with moderate language and i will be happy to talk.

Agree biba that playing any kind of blame game is beyond silly. If no deal it is, we have got to agree to disagree as each side has red lines they can’t cross. So be it. Time to gear up and move on.

On another note, Covid has decimated the U.K. and Europe. Now the logistics of how to vaccinate millions of people are also on the front burner. And how (for the EU) to share out a €750 billion loan??

Yes Brexit is important but in the big sea of a pandemic maybe not so much. Us politico bods on here find it fascinating. The majority of the general public? Nah. They’re getting on with Tiers, Levels, mental health issues, shielding, loneliness and worrying in some cases about jobs. Christmas. Illness etc.

Life will go on. The world will turn. The sun will shine. The grass will still grow and one way or another people will adapt. It’s what we do.

So you’re saying that the majority of people didn’t pay much attention to the details of what they were voting for in the referendum then? Given that they’re not, in general all that interested in politics. Just Sun/Daily Mail headlines perhaps?

Jaberwok....I realised ages ago that some pro EU posters will constantly trot out condescending and patronising posts and assure anyone who supports Brexit that their posts are
‘Silly’.Look at it this way.....it’s their only way of trying to put themselves on ‘the high moral ground’ by putting down posters with opposite views to themselves, and being so angry that we have left the EU.I feel sorry for them really, ( kind of).

Nope. Just my own musings this morning MayBee validated to some extent by people (out and about Christmas shopping if they can) what is their main concern at the moment.

Nothing to do with the Daily Mail or the Guardian.

Heartening really to realise that yes, this Brexit is big, but made me realise life will go on.

And for all the naysayers on here with facts, quotes and pie charts, I do fully respect your viewpoints. Our government has promised help to farmers and others in difficult situations where they can to support them through the transition.

Good news IS out there. It IS the season of goodwill.
We could try to join in. Be less abrasive and kinder on here and maybe less het up.

Just my opinion.

I’m staying off politics for a while. Let the dust settle. Anyway I need to go and write some Christmas cards and buy a tree this weekend when I’m out of quarantine!

Urmstongran, I do believe, like Raab, that you have forgotten the UK is an Island.

Very different to the other EU countries who can stick together and move import and export to each other without borders, crossing seas, tedious paperwork, massive delays or tariffs. Plus the will to support each other and work together. In times of shortages, as Covid will cause for all- they will prioritise each other. For medicines, chemicals for water treatment, oxygen, and millions of other essential stuff we just cannot or do not produce.

The fact this Goverment is planning to Airlift the vaccine with military planes (that is if the EU allows the UK into their air space, and military planes even more so) - should tell you all you need to know.

The government has jettisoned the Internal Markets Bill clause.

Some sense and pulling back from breaking international law.

Appears a deal has been reached on NI. Hopefully details will be clearer later.

Hardly anyone on here ever seems to put any blame on the EU for a good deal not being agreed with the UK.

Perhaps someone could name a non EU country - think Australia, Japan, Mexico, S Korea etc. - which negotiated a free trade deal with them, where the EU said they had to have control over their borders and seas, their laws and how their companies conducted themselves internally. I think it'll be a very short list of none. That's what being an independent country means and that is what was voted for.
