Just that really. Watching the News tonight and it seems there are conflicting views, as always.

Patriotism - the last refuge of a scoundrel, so said Dr Johnson, those that can give no rational reason for action, only that it’s patriotic.
I’m the first to cheer on the national team at whatever sport and I’m proud to be British, but I can’t say I’m particularly patriotic.
What many think is Patriotism is in fact Tribalism where some sort of special association is above everything else, wether it makes sense or not.

Cultism

Whitewavemark2 Wed 09-Dec-20 16:15:41

Project fear from - um - The Telegraph!!

lemongrove Wed 09-Dec-20 16:24:56

I would imagine that SNP supporters fully understand why people want to break away from the EU, since they wish to do the same from Westminster.....but here’s the thing, they don’t!
Oh, it’s different, they say, but actually, no it isn’t it’s really much the same.

Should know pretty soon if there will be a deal or not.

Franbern Wed 09-Dec-20 16:29:49

Patriotism always strikes me as strange. Really do not understand how anyone can be proud on a pure accident of their birth being inside political lines drawn on the map.

As they don't want to break away from the EU, they think the English are barmy.

Have any of your friends ever been in an unhappy marriage, divorced then remarried happily?

lemongrove Wed 09-Dec-20 18:00:01

Nope, although Burton and Taylor did....wait, that was still unhappy!

Casdon Wed 09-Dec-20 18:10:25

Well the good thing for Scotland paddyanne is that
lemongrove will fully understand and embrace your reasons for independence, and will support that, as it’s exactly the same thing as the U.K. leaving the E.U.!

lemongrove Wed 09-Dec-20 18:16:14

Yes, I do.

lemongrove Wed 09-Dec-20 18:19:59

It’s total independence, easy to understand that. I should be sorry to see Scotland leave the Union, but if it’s what they want in another referendum further down the road ( not this year!) then so be it.

Jaberwok Wed 09-Dec-20 18:20:12

Well I certainly do. If Scotland votes for independence that's fine by me, Wales and NI too. I think perhaps they should get a cast iron deal with the EU, but again that's up to them. good luck to them, they'll need it.

vegansrock Wed 09-Dec-20 18:21:18

So will England

varian Wed 09-Dec-20 18:23:07

I do actually know some couples who have remarried after divorce, but I do wonder how many other divorcees lived to regret it but never had the nerve to admit their mistake.

It is so much easier to fool people, or to mislead them into a foolish action, than it is to get them to admit that they were wrong.

lemongrove Wed 09-Dec-20 18:27:02

You should work for Relate Varian ??

TBsNana Wed 09-Dec-20 18:30:24

Franbern, David2025 I agree - have never seen being patriotic as a particularly good thing as it always seems to harbour much that is bad. I think people see patriotism as loyalty, but don't seem to understand that loyalty has to be earned....

Jaberwok Wed 09-Dec-20 18:35:48

Scotland and England were, apart from sharing the crown, two separate countries pre 1707 and managed perfectly well till the Darien Affair, so presumably they can do so again. yes, it'd be a shame to break up the union, but not the end of the world.

They were actually fighting each other tooth and nail for centuries, much the same as the English.
I would vote for Scottish Independance, there would be just one condition - They rebuilt the Wall.

Jaberwok Wed 09-Dec-20 19:50:35

They'll have to build something as there will have to be a hard border once Scotland joins the EU.

Whitewavemark2 Wed 09-Dec-20 20:22:25

Presumably if Johnson doesn’t succeed tonight, it is all over?

Blimey.

biba70 Wed 09-Dec-20 20:26:48

Blimey and a lot more

some on here will be delighted -
until their loved ones turn as they pay the price.

MayBee70 Wed 09-Dec-20 22:36:46

Just read ‘no concessions’ on Facebook but surely it’s too early for any facts to be known yet?

Casdon Wed 09-Dec-20 22:40:41

It’s on BBC newspage now - no agreement.

MayBee70 Wed 09-Dec-20 22:42:09

Also read ‘extended till Sunday’....(will put the news channel on...no sleep for me tonight...)
