New EU Treaty - a good deal or not?

I thought this deserved its own thread. This deal is about to be announced and I’ve just heard Farage on the radio claiming it will be sellout. Trying to stir the pot already. Just wondered how it will be spun. There will be a lot of relieved businesses and relief that there is no deal at least.

Urmstongran Wed 30-Dec-20 22:25:08

I agree with you there Galaxy I can honestly say, hand on heart that I have never called anyone a Remoaner. I think it is an awful slur.

Changing tack
Well said Bodach. Hear, hear.
varian please stop this. Brexit & Covid are apples and pears.

CatCrone Wed 30-Dec-20 21:57:45

I would be most interested to hear the views of those who are joyfully celebrating on the following. In 2019, the service industries accounted for 80% of total UK economic output. Services accounted for 82% of employment in July-September 2020.
We do NOT have a deal covering these areas.

GrannyGravy13 Wed 30-Dec-20 21:55:29

There are not teams as such because we are all going forward together. We may disagree on some things but the arguments of the last four and a half years are finally over.
Onwards and upwards ??

Bodach Wed 30-Dec-20 21:53:28

"It s great to see joy and happiness in removing freedoms from your fellow citizens on a day when 1000 have died of C19".
Dear vegansrock: What has Brexit got to do with Covid mortality figures? Do I detect a touch of glass-half-empty in your irony? Go on: give us a break, and allow us to bask in seeing Brexit finally over the line. Channelling my inner Sir Toby Belch, I put it to you, "Dust thou think, because thou art virtuous, there shall be no more cakes and ale?"

Galaxy Wed 30-Dec-20 21:45:11

Thats ok, but dont you think dividing into teams is divisive. And also I know it wasnt you but could people get some new jokes. Surely there must be an alternative to remoaner by now

Urmstongran Wed 30-Dec-20 21:39:34

I apologise unreservedly Galaxy it was a bad choice of word there. I can understand you calling me out on it.

But it was more how Lucretzia explained it. Brexit WAS so divisive.

It just feels F A N T A S T I C to have moved on ‼️

Galaxy Wed 30-Dec-20 21:36:00

grin

Lucretzia Wed 30-Dec-20 21:32:21

I think that the word hating has taken on a new meaning

Haters gonna hate etc etc

Not to be taken literally.

Galaxy Wed 30-Dec-20 21:30:15

You said stop the hating. Holding a different opinion to you isnt hating.

vegansrock Wed 30-Dec-20 21:25:45

It s great to see joy and happiness in removing freedoms from your fellow citizens on a day when 1000 have died of C19.

Lucretzia Wed 30-Dec-20 21:21:50

17% of 8000 people

Good news from Aldi though.

Not muttering at all.

Will celebrate very happily when the Irish passports arrive for the offspring.

Bodach Wed 30-Dec-20 21:18:41

"I take it you’re with us Bodach?
Good woman!"

I certainly am, Urmstongran - on the matter of Brexit. It's a pleasure and an honour to join you in celebrating today's events. Your unalloyed happiness and optimism shine out amongst a 'muttering' of miserable remainist/rejoinist commentators on GN this evening.

On the matter of my being a "Good Woman", however, may I refer you to my (Gaelic) username?

Only 17% think Johnson's deal is good for our country

Urmstongran Wed 30-Dec-20 21:05:42

I don’t hate anyone Galaxy. Truly not.
When have I ever intimated so? To anyone?
Hate is a horrible word.

No, tonight might seem silly or simplistic to many who didn’t vote the way some of us did.

But I would just like to encourage a little joy and exultation on what is, for many a new beginning! For those who are feeling as I am tonight. It’s been a long time coming!
??

Galaxy Wed 30-Dec-20 20:55:51

I have just been talking on another thread about the dangers of teams. Are you with us or against us. No nuance. Just some comic book idea of goodies and baddies.

Galaxy Wed 30-Dec-20 20:54:40

I dont hate you urmstongran, having a different opinion to you isnt hating.

Urmstongran Wed 30-Dec-20 20:52:40

I take it you’re with us Bodach?
Good woman!
Take a recommend yourself.

"Zip-a-dee-doo-dah, zip-a-dee-ay.
My, oh, my, what a wonderful day.
Plenty of sunshine headin' my way.
Zip-a-dee-doo-dah, zip-a-dee-ay!"

Boris said to Laura Kussenberg when she mentioned financial services ‘now c’mon Laura you know well enough there was never a deal to be done there’!’

From the BBC:
The prime minister refused to acknowledge it will mean new barriers to trade, in an interview BBC political editor Laura Kuenssberg.

He conceded that there would be "changes" for business when the UK leaves EU trading rules on Thursday.

But he insisted the deal would allow the UK to "go our own way but also have free trade" with the EU.

Critics had said "you couldn't have free trade with the EU unless you conformed with the EU's laws", said the PM. and "that that was having your cake and eating it".
"That has turned out not to be true," he added. "I want you to see that this is a cakeist treaty."

Casdon Wed 30-Dec-20 20:45:35

The central question of this post still hasn’t been answered though has it: EU Treaty - a good deal or not?

A year from now we will know far more about the implications in the real world for the UK than we do now. Those currently claiming ‘victory’ should pause for thought now and let it play out.

Nezumi65 Wed 30-Dec-20 20:45:18

I’ll crack open the champagne when sons Irish passports arrive. That will be worth a celebration.

Urmstongran Wed 30-Dec-20 20:44:48

Well said Pantglas ?
Just the right amount of optimism there. ✅

Nezumi65 Wed 30-Dec-20 20:44:24

Of course the debate isn’t finished.

Nothing has been decided on services for starters (80% of our GDP).

vegansrock Wed 30-Dec-20 20:43:59

Over done and finished? In your dreams.
