New EU Treaty - a good deal or not?

I thought this deserved its own thread. This deal is about to be announced and I’ve just heard Farage on the radio claiming it will be sellout. Trying to stir the pot already. Just wondered how it will be spun. There will be a lot of relieved businesses and relief that there is no deal at least.

As a result we were constantly reacting to EU positions throughout and even agreed to negotiate from an EU text rather than a U.K. one. Unsurprisingly, the agreement ended up being mostly what the EU wanted

We negotiated from an EU text? What? We didn’t even have our own? OMG. Well that’s made me laugh.

Not sure who Simon Harris is

I was reading an article yesterday and it mentioned Twitter and how people seem to believe it reflects the real world.

It doesn't.

Simon Harris is just a person. The same way that we are all just 'people', nothing special about any of us but collectively we can, from time to time, have some influence on how our affairs are run, at local and at national level. Which is as it should be. So the views of an ordinary person are perfectly entitled to consideration. They're not unimportant just because they're not well known.

Twitter is fascinating because, contrary to journalistic opinion, it represents an enormously diverse cross section of people. You can find experts in their fields in just about any topic you care to name and explore all sorts of byways connected with your own particular interests, or even develop some new interests.

Of course people tend to stay in their bubble, like staying with like, but it's also absolutely possible to leave your 'bubble' and explore others, even those that you know you will loathe...

The 'real world' is far more constraining and limited than twitter

MaizieD Of course.....only intellectuals like yourself understand anything about politics (not) ......go on have a glass
Of something sparkly??

Well, instead of being snarkey why don't you refute my proposition? It's always interesting to know how others understand concepts. Especially important ones like parliamentary democracy .

I'll have some bubbly tonight. I shall drink to future comrades in the campaign for closer union with the EU grin

lemongrove Thu 31-Dec-20 12:18:44

Parliamentary democracy is working MaizieD and always has been.
Glad you will have some bubbly, it will perk you up ( for whatever reason you drink it)
Closer union to the EU.....not going to be happening, please don’t waste the rest of your life on a pipe dream.

Perhaps not The Deluded rather The Sore Loosers ? or The Sour Grapers, or They Think They Know It Alls But Have Got Every Referendum and Election Wrong. ?

This is helpful how?

Not helpful but spectacularly hilariously witty and amusing............not

Lucretzia Thu 31-Dec-20 12:22:46

Goodness me, MaizieB!

That did make me laugh

I have friends and relatives who voted Remain. Some voted Leave.

I've read on GN many times that it would be impossible for them to mix with Tory and Brexit voters

Personally I find that amazing.

I'm very capable of remaining friendly with people from all walks of life

But a lot of GN posters don't agree

Galaxy Thu 31-Dec-20 12:23:24

I dont think people tend to use Twitter like that though MazieD, they do stay in their bubbles and rarely stray from their comfort zone.

seamstress Thu 31-Dec-20 12:25:59

We still have close ties with the EU through the treaty which actually isn't as good as Mays which Johnson and others railed against. Bunch of chancers. Its obvious, leavers actually didn't care about fishing or NI, as they have just rolled over on these ones. If people feel happy celebrating loosing freedoms and impoverishing many, then enjoy. As for all the predictions that most people in other membership states are envious of the UK - well that one hasn't happened, despite the claims the there would be a whole whale of countries following our example back in 2016.

Which would still be decades less ‘harping’ than the Tory right.

Whitewavemark2 Thu 31-Dec-20 13:55:27

I think the priority is not rejoining, but to improve the deal, which of course won’t be difficult, particularly as the EU have paved the way to do so in the agreement.

I’m glad a deal is about to be announced. If both sides feel they’ve ‘lost’ something they wanted that’s good negotiation.

To be honest after 4+ years im sick of talking about it now. Negotiations will doubtless go on for months as and when but not big news headlines all the time.

Brexit is done next week. We are out. Finally.

Is this your next tattoo UG?

I agree.

Oh Firecracker give it a rest with your silly, nasty comments. The echo chamber of your triumphant Brexiteers club is starting to sound as if you are having to re-assure each other that you voted the right way, surely not? At least with covid we won't have the embarrassing show of all the Brexiteers, led by their dear leader Farage draped in union jacks, rejoicing that they have got their country back, and baying at Big Ben. What a depressing thought to be glad of covid19.

Firecracker123 Thu 31-Dec-20 14:42:58

My comments have hit the mark with some it seems with them still harping on about Nigel Farage again, ? just amusing myself after four and a half years of Remainers trying to stop Brexit.

I expect you will be amusing yourself for a very long time because many of us aren't going to stop complaining about the present situation as regards Brexit and the govt.

Aren't you all getting a little bit bored with the emoticons? I know I am. They're not very funny but perhaps rather childish.

Thank you to MayBee70 and Nezumi65 for at least reading my post. I certainly hope his business will survive, as he has to provide for his family. Good Luck with your son, Nezumi65, Been there done that. sad

I'd also like to thank brexiters who gave me answers to my question. OH, YOU DIDN'T! No surprise there then. angry

Sadly, GillT57, I should think that that Euro-loony who has been baying "STOOOPPP BREXXXXIIIIT" at Big Ben for the last few years will still be there in 2021: foaming at the mouth and shouting something even more inane like "REEEEJOIN"...

Whitewavemark2 Thu 31-Dec-20 16:01:22

Still it must be a change for the loons not to have to rave against the European Commission any more.

They will instead rave against the Partnership Council, but this time Britain won’t have the strength and influence it had as a member of the EU, so there will be a lot more to rave about.

seamstress Thu 31-Dec-20 16:02:15

All the calls for lets unite and get behind this marvellous new dawn, are doomed if the nastiness and name calling are anything to go by. Im so glad to have EU citizenship still yay! I know I'm joining an ever-growing band- welcome Stanley Johnson!

Whitewavemark2 Thu 31-Dec-20 16:06:50

Tomorrow and the day after and all the days after that I will be a European. I simply live in the U.K., but I feel culturally European, my loyalty lies with this continent, with our common history and common interests.
