New EU Treaty - a good deal or not?

I thought this deserved its own thread. This deal is about to be announced and I’ve just heard Farage on the radio claiming it will be sellout. Trying to stir the pot already. Just wondered how it will be spun. There will be a lot of relieved businesses and relief that there is no deal at least.

Instead of calling themselves The Rejoiners perhaps The Deluded would be more apt?

lemongrove Thu 31-Dec-20 10:11:17

petra

Happy leaving day to all brexiteers ??????????

If we had not left we would be in this situation.

Thank you Petra ? the champagne will be out tonight, for a Happy New Year and for a new start in all ways.??

What's with all this 'leaving day' nonsense? We 'left' a year ago.

Now we have a 'deal' that ties us to EU rules for at least the next 5 years. This has been mentioned before and the deafening silence from Leavers on this point is almost palpable. And there was me thinking that being tied to the EU in any way was complete anathema to them. How weird it's been to go through all this angst and upheaval to end up still tied to the EU but with no influence and no say..

Enjoy your celebrations you silly people. Congratulations on ruining people's lives and ambitions and making the UK poorer.

And special congratulations on destroying Parliamentary democracy.

Though I realise that you never had any interest in Parliamentary democracy at all and are perfectly happy to have destroyed that along with everything else.

Never mind predictions about a campaign for us to apply to rejoin the EU in years to come, my prediction is that there will be other EU countries campaigning to leave. Maybe not straight away as they might want to see if we do indeed ‘proper mightily’ (love that phrase!) but I would put money on us not being the only ones heading for the exit.

lemongrove Thu 31-Dec-20 10:17:33

MaizieD Of course.....only intellectuals like yourself understand anything about politics (not) ......go on have a glass
Of something sparkly??

Perhaps not The Deluded rather The Sore Loosers ? or The Sour Grapers, or They Think They Know It Alls But Have Got Every Referendum and Election Wrong. ?

Yes just more teams.

MayBee70 Thu 31-Dec-20 10:37:16

It’ll be interesting to see what else The Star Chamber, the true rulers of this country, have planned for us over the next few years.

Nezumi65 Thu 31-Dec-20 10:37:45

I have been surprised by how easily power is being placed in the hands of the executive.

A lot of most vocal opponents have actually been (ex) Tory MPs - who see the Tory Party as the upholder of traditions etc.

It will be interesting to see how that plays out. Even my Brexit voting life long Tory voting father seems rather appalled.

Simon Harris is one of the many who regrets what he did-

"YES I voted Leave
YES it was a mistake
YES I fell for slogans
YES I thought I was sticking it to the establishment
YES I am entitled to regret it
YES you can call me a tw*t if it makes you feel better
YES I can still call out people who are still convinced it’s a good idea"

Lucretzia Thu 31-Dec-20 10:43:38

Not sure who Simon Harris is

I was reading an article yesterday and it mentioned Twitter and how people seem to believe it reflects the real world.

It doesn't.

Galaxy Thu 31-Dec-20 10:44:48

Yes I think I have had this conversation before about how I might have disagreed on a number of things with the likes of Ken Clarke, Major etc but I understood them, I understood their policies, their morality. I dont understand the current conservative party at all, I think they have very little to do with conservatism.

MayBee70 Thu 31-Dec-20 10:48:38

Did anyone watch the programme about celebrities last night. It was interesting in that it explained how celebrities use Twitter and how it enabled Trump to reinvent himself as a great businessman and his people then forgot his bankruptcies. It also explained where Kim Kardashian sprung from: something that I’ve always wondered about. I really struggle with the fact that such people become so influential.

Galaxy Thu 31-Dec-20 10:51:18

And call fall at the stroke of a keyboard though Maybee, Twitter tends to spit people out very easily. And it is true that Twitter in no way reflects the opinions of the general public

Nezumi65 Thu 31-Dec-20 10:53:18

Ken Clarke and Major are streets ahead of their current Parliamentary Party members.

I linked to an article a couple of days ago which looked at whether Johnson could really call himself a one nation conservative. It concluded that as he booted out most of the socially liberal Tory MPs he couldn't really claim that title. grin It described him as a nationalist. I would never vote Tory but the shift to the right really concerns me.

No fear of that. There is no insult bad enough that could burst my joyous bubble.
Oh, just realised I've given them some fresh meat joyous bubble ??

I know this is a hard day for millions of citizens in the UK.

Tonight so many rights and freedoms come to an end.

Looking ahead, I pledge to still have you in my mind when taking decisions in the European Parliament.

Never forget: We will always be stronger together.

Whitewavemark2 Thu 31-Dec-20 11:21:07

“We will get rid of the red tape said the leavers

This was initially reported in March, Nezum65

I'd have thought he'd have got one by now

moggie57 Thu 31-Dec-20 11:21:41

we didnt want a deal .i wonder whats coming?

Nezumi65 Thu 31-Dec-20 11:29:14

If he's still talking about it, sounds like he has dawdled a bit Lucretzia. (Bit like me with the Irish passports - it's only now that they are needed).

If I understand it correctly, I am French. My mother was born in France, her mother was totally French as was her grandfather. So for me it is about reclaiming what I already have. And that makes me very happy,” said the 80-year-old Johnson, who was speaking in French

I will always be a European, that’s for sure. One cannot tell the British people: you are not Europeans. Having a tie with the European Union is important,” he added
