How did you vote and why today
Boris is planning to go to Scotland to meet Nicola Sturgeon to discuss how coronavirus is being handled and I expect he will slip in the little matter of Scottish independence while he is there. Nicola Sturgeon has asked him not to go as it is not essential travel. It seems ironic that he is travelling all that way to talk about the virus, breaking his own rules on travel in the process.
At this critical time for all countries, Firecracker she is concentrating on the pandemic, not on independence.
My post was to Firecracker
I can predict that most Scots will rank him with the carpetbaggers. He is being counterproductive to the unity he is hoping to achieve.
Don't forget that the Union was a Union of equal sovereign kingdoms - England and Scotland, under a Scottish king, not the acquisition by a victorious England of a vanquished Scotland.

Thé truth is many people are hurting through their use of drugs Firecracker. That is what hurts me along with the lack of compassion shown by you, irrespective of what Nationality one might be.
How do you know what my feelings are towards drug use. I was just stating that Scotland is the drugs capital of the world. Perhaps the sainted Nicola should concentrate on sorting Scotlands problems first rather than trying to break up the UK.
Is that you Carrie? ??
LauraNorder I too am in favour of a United Kingdom. The slogan was "better together" and it was a true one. It is better that the various parts of the kingdom are united and work together in things like import/export and social and working conditions for the prosperity of the whole.
However, each region has its own personality, needs and priorities. That was recognised when Wales and Scotland devolved to have their own Parliaments responsible for various internal matters, getting a fair proportion of what is spent on those matters over the whole country and contributing a fair share from the taxes paid in Wales or Scotland. (Those moaning about Scotland using some of that money for prescriptions should lobby Westminster to do the same in England)
Health is of those devolved issues. Decisions on combatting Covid some under the health umbrella. The four countries of the United Kingdom can discuss Covid measures, and pass on ideas and experiences, but the decisions are still up to the devolved Parliaments. Johnson has no authority to apply pressure for everything to be exactly the same - the same as Westminster!
This visit is a political one, at a time when Johnson's popularity level is sinking like a stone. He thinks he can bump up his appeal by being masterful with Nicola Sturgeon. You don't have to be an SNP voter wishing for independence to know that he is likely to come off worst in that encounter.
It may help the people of Scotland to feel part of the union when the head of the government of the United Kingdom puts in an appearance and shows that we all care about being one nation.
If he didn’t turn up in Scotland he would be accused of ignoring Scotland, only caring about England.
Just a thought.

Some revolting posts on here.
The thread is discussing whether people in the public eye should be seen to travel unnecessarily. It’s not an excuse to make nasty, daft remarks about the elected First Minister of Scotland.
But its OK to make nasty daft remarks about Boris Johnson. Hypocrite comes to mind.
no he shouldn't be going. He made himself look a fool at the beginning when he was going around shaking hands and not wearing a mask and then caught covid. Seems as though he hasn't learned his lesson. It's all about being seen to be doing something. If his MP's can't go back and sit in the commons, then he has no business travelling around the country. He should stay in Whitehall and help get us out of this mess, that we're in.
Is anyone seriously suggesting that his trip might contribute in any way to "saving the union"? - If so, how?

PaddyAnne Wales voted to leave the EU. Wales voted in more Conservative MPs than ever in 2019. Latest polls show only 23% in favour of independence. Continue to rant on behalf of Scotland by all means but leave Wales out of it.
Personally I am in favour of our United Kingdom and wish we could all respect each other.

He is not breaking the rules he is working ! Sorry but Nichola Sturgeon is the non essential here !
The rule is "You can only leave home for work purposes where it is unreasonable for you to do your job from home. "
So what is necessary about his physical presence?

If Johnson goes to Scotland can we stop him coming back to England?

Firecracker123
Boris Johnson is PM of the whole of the UK seems to me he can go where he wants.
If Scotland gains independence from the UK
What currency are you going to use, you have already been told you can't use the £?
How are you going to support yourselves as an independent country, no Barnet Formula to pay for prescriptions etc.
How are you going to pay for your hospitals and health care with no handouts and top ups from Westminster? England's ambulance service had to help you out last week when your ambulance service couldn't cope.
So you support indpendence then?

While there are drug users, they will find new suppliers as the current ones are removed. Drug problems need to be attacked at the user side as well as the suppliers. That takes a lot of medical attention. Just where do you get that when the NHS is stretched to the limit and beyond by Covid?
Ask Nicola she's in charge. ?
Rules don’t apply to Johnson or his acolytes - I’m surprised people don’t understand that!

What a heartless post firecracker.
Perhaps the truth hurts.

Sturgeon is a good, clear, no nonsense politician who makes Johnson look like the twit he is Of course it’s not essential travel he’s a total nincampoop
Nasty post firecracker
Sturgeon is a one trip pony.
Why don't you answer the questions how are you going to support yourselves without Westminster handouts. Believe me I'd be happy if the Barnet Formula was stopped.
As always he’s damned if he does, damned if he doesn’t.
I applaud any effort to save the union.
Wales leaving the UK

Firecracker what nasty comments! Is it any wonder that many in Scotland want independence with sneering, unpleasant remarks like that? No need for bile, unless you can't help it?
It OK to want independence but how are you going to support yourselves?
NannyDaft - he is working!!!? Are you serious? There is no need whatsoever for him to make this journey and break the lockdown rules. It is just a bit of window dressing. Silly man.
Hopefully it will backfire on him and make people realise what a plonker he truly is.
Firecracker you do understand that Drugs issues are NOT devolved and every solution the Scot Gov brings to the table is rejected by BOjo and CO.? Could that be because he has his own agenda in making the rUK view Scots as drunk.junkies and generally a waste of space.
Maybe he should had told George Osborne to keep his mouth shut last week when he pointed out what a LOSS Scotland would be to the union. That all the inventions ,discoveries, art, Literature (and money) that we have supplied TO teh Union over 300 years is THEIRS until we go and they are left poorer and without credence in the rest of the world. He even apologised to Wales for not having the same issues with them leaving the EU? How DID the welsh feel about that ?
