I think you could show anybody the letter but it could not be reproduced.

None of them, Markle, his daughter or the MOS? come out of it with any dignity.

The only point of real importance is establishing who owns the copyright to a letter sent from one person to another.

Oh come on surely no one thinks the Mail didn't pay Thomas Markle a substantial amount for the story and thought they would get away with it because the RF never sues.

Having said that I’m just wondering. Suppose you had fallen out with a member of your family and they sent you a horrible letter. Then they went round telling people that they’d tried to make it up but you’d rejected them. You’d ignored their pleas.

Would you have the right to show people the letter? What it actually said.

Megan's father will be disappointed as he had asked the newspaper to publish extracts from the letter to set the record straight. He said he had spoken about the letter publicly because his daughter's close friends had revealed its existence in an anonymous interview with a US magazine in which they had characterised it as a loving letter. He wanted his day in court.
I don't particularly see this as a "comprehensive win" as per the statement from Megan.
I'm sure though that the Royal Family will be pleased with this outcome.
