August Philip Hawke Brooksbank. Queen Victoria's husband Albert had the middle name of August, Prince Philip will be touched to have his name included and I have no idea about the choice of Hawke. I like Princess Eugenie and the photograph of the 3 of them, taken by their midwife, is lovely.

Wouldn't be my choice, I found several males by the name of Augustus in my family tree, but they lived back in the 19th century. Having said that I always found the name Eugenie attractive, again associated with over a century ago, but unusual. Maybe the little chap will be known as Gus.

Augustus is different to August They should have called him February ??
Daft name combination for working class people but up to them all moneyed people seem to have strange names for their kids look at Rees mog and Johnson but then so do a lot of so called ‘celebrities’

Great name

And he'll be going to school with lots of children with unusual names

Grandma70s Sat 20-Feb-21 15:18:35

I’d like to hear how they pronounce it. It’s unusual even by today’s upper class standards, and I quite like it. He’ll be at school with other children with bizarre names, so I doubt if it will be a problem.

Augustus who wouldn’t have any soup is a cautionary tale by, I think, Hilaire Belloc, designed to intimidate fussy eaters.

Good point Baggs

MissAdventure Sat 20-Feb-21 15:20:12

I think my mum had an ulterior motive, then.
Thank you. smile

Grandma70s Sat 20-Feb-21 15:20:55

Oh no, it’s Heinrich Heine, who wrote a lot of these cautionary tales.

MissAdventure Sat 20-Feb-21 15:28:28

I really enjoyed them. smile

August is a fine name, meaning esteemed, magnificent.
Old Victorian names seem to have been gaining in popularity recently.

Summerlove Sat 20-Feb-21 15:55:23

I like it.
Auggie is another popular nickname along with Gus

ninathenana Sat 20-Feb-21 15:58:03

My mum had an uncle August. Mum pronounced it so it sounded French 'Augoost' I don't know if he was French ?

stella1949 Sat 20-Feb-21 16:19:30

Oh dear, my first thought was "But it's only February !".

However I don't think he'll get ribbed about it - family will call him Gus and when he goes to Eton , with a mother who is a Princess, I'm sure the other lads will be polite.

grandmajet Sat 20-Feb-21 16:53:30

But then one day, one sad fateful day
He cried out take that nasty soup away

MissAdventure Sat 20-Feb-21 16:55:18

smile
I knew it! The naughty boy!

BlueBelle Sat 20-Feb-21 17:00:22

Gus always makes me think of a man with a big flabby tummy perhaps cos it sounds like guts ???

trisher Sat 20-Feb-21 17:02:54

First of all I thought why? the name is Augustus and then I realised they don't want him teased as "Augustus Gloop"-https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lzmzZaB0kss
from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. So they've called him after a month!!!

grandmajet Sat 20-Feb-21 17:16:46

Anyone remember Gus Honeybun, the rabbit? He was on telly in Devon back in the day.

Cherrytree59 Sat 20-Feb-21 17:19:07

Oh yes I do. Augustus Jeremiah Honeybun with Ian Stirling and Judi Spiers. Around 1987.

Peasblossom Sat 20-Feb-21 17:29:24

What happened toAugustus and the soup then? I’m desperate to know what went wrong.

I only remembered the first couple of lines.

Ellianne Sat 20-Feb-21 17:36:11

Are you sure this Augustus boy with the soup wasn't by Heinrich Hoffmann, not Heinrich Heine? Heine was a bit sombre.
Where's a German scholar when we need one?

GrannyGravy13 Sat 20-Feb-21 17:36:56

All our children and now our grandchildren have old fashioned traditional names, some could say they were posh names . Naming a much loved child is very personal, I like the names Eugenie and Jack have chosen for their son,

lemsip Sat 20-Feb-21 17:40:09

he will be called Phillip of course.

Augustus and his sad end!

MissAdventure Sat 20-Feb-21 17:41:36

Augustus was a chubby lad;
Fat ruddy cheeks Augustus had;
And everybody saw with joy
The plump and hearty healthy boy.
He ate and drank as he was told,
And never let his soup get cold.
But one day, one cold winter's day,
He threw away the spoon and screamed:
"O take the nasty soup away!
I won't have any soup to-day:
I will not, will not eat my soup!
I will not eat it, no!"

Next day! now look, the picture shows
How lank and lean Augustus grows!
Yet, though he feels so weak and ill,
The naughty fellow cries out stillÑ
"Not any soup for me, I say!
O take the nasty soup away!
I will not, will not eat my soup!
I will not eat it, no!"

The third day comes. O what a sin!
To make himself so pale and thin.
Yet, when the-soup is put on table,
He screams, as loud as he is ableÑ
"Not any soup for me, I say!
O take the nasty soup away!
I won't have any soup to-day!"

Look at him, now the fourth day's come!
He scarce outweighs a sugar-plum;

He's like a little bit of thread;
And on the fifth day he was-dead.
