Does the display of union jacks by politicians making video calls from their homes not just appear ridiculous, but a tad sinister?

Having left the EU, it it time to rebuild being British, and make the use of the Union Jack mandatory in class rooms and public buildings, this would teach children the importance of patriotism and loyalty to ones Country.
??

The BBC should also be forced to use it in newsrooms.

It is time for politicians to ensure the woke PC left do not get the upper hand in this invented culture war.

It must also be made a crime to deface or remove statues.

Good God, Ug!

And you think that I'm being absurd to use the word fascist...

What a load of absolute twaddle.

Alegrias1 Sat 20-Mar-21 20:19:29

Blue and yellow is fine for IKEA but not really suitable for a flag.

The Swedes might beg to differ.

As for the rugby, I'm saying nothing.....

Callistemon Sat 20-Mar-21 20:17:00

Has?

Callistemon Sat 20-Mar-21 20:16:45

Wow, you've all worked yourselves into a frenzy because a (male) BBC presenter had a joke with a government minister

Algerias No, it's the rugby which as done that!

Wow, you've all worked yourselves into a frenzy because a (male) BBC presenter had a joke with a government minister over the size of the flag in the corner of his living room. Then another presenter joined in.

And no, she didn't use the term "flag-shaggers" but now that you've said it Mamardoit I guess a good proportion of people on GN will believe that.

As for making the flag compulsory in classrooms and on the BBC - well what I want to say about that would get me banned from GN. We're not a totalitarian state yet. But don't worry about the defacing of statues - you'll get a longer sentence for that than for raping someone.

Well Said Alegrias1

Also of course, Wales isn’t represented on the union flag. Marmadoit, not important enough?

Too important, Casdon!

I would certainly have made space for the dragon if I had had any say in the design.

The Welsh flag is the best flag by far. The Union flag is probably in second place. Blue and yellow is fine for IKEA but not really suitable for a flag.

Callistemon Sat 20-Mar-21 20:05:48

Lucca

Has anyone here got a flag in their living room?

We're surrounded.
Union flag, Welsh Flag, Australian flag, the Saltire (DH has some Scottish blood), the Tricolore and we did have the flag of St George over the mantepiece until they lost this afternoon and we binned it.

Casdon Sat 20-Mar-21 20:03:32

Callistemon Quite! I don’t think GagaJo’s prediction will be coming true, forcing us to display only the union flag somehow, that would be more likely to alienate Wales than virtually any other action.
Anyway, Come On Wales, the rugby’s started and the flags are waving in my house.

Callistemon Sat 20-Mar-21 20:02:49

The Welsh first minister always appears with a flag.

But it doesn't make him any more authoritative [sigh]

A flag is a bit of cloth. Why imbue it with some sacred significance. It’s like a football shirt I suppose.

Exactly. And we know the tribalism surrounding football.

I've only just looked back at the Charlie and Naga clip. I have given up watching the BBC in the morning. I get more done with the radio on.

The comment was infantile. Did she really use the term 'flag shaggers' in a tweet?

PamelaJ1 Sat 20-Mar-21 19:52:30

I think that everyone who appears on a video call on the media should have a totally plain wall behind them.
I was watching some woman being interviewed on GMB. I changed channels, LO and behold she was there again sans copies of her latest book which were prominent onGMB??

Why wasn’t a law passed. We may all have been happier.

Urmstongran Sat 20-Mar-21 19:52:19

Well said Greyduster and maddyone. ?

I think there are millions of people in this country who like the fact our government ministers are doing this and think it's well overdue; well done the Government for doing this - it's about time.
???

GagaJo Sat 20-Mar-21 19:52:03

I think if you talk to people in those colonies they see it very differently Greyduster.

You can't undo the colonial past. So yes, we do need to feel shame forever.

Greyduster Sat 20-Mar-21 19:49:05

And how long are we going to have to wear a hair shirt over our colonial past too? Other countries - France, Belgium, Germany - had colonies too! Are they off the mea culpa hook while we suffer shame forever? Our colonial legacy wasn’t all bad - we made mistakes, yes, but we did leave some good things behind.

maddyone Sat 20-Mar-21 19:48:57

Lucca

But they are at home! I am happy to be British too but I honestly think this looks a bit weird and in my view doesn’t endear them to any slightly less than fully convinced Conservatives.

I think it only looks weird because we’re not used to it. In other countries it’s perfectly normal for politicians and indeed anyone else to display the national flag.
Unfortunately the flag has been hijacked by the far right. It’s very sad. We should all be able to respect our national flag without feeling that we’re somehow representing the far right.
I think the BBC presenters who sniggered are disgusting and should be removed from the programme.

GagaJo Sat 20-Mar-21 19:48:35

I guess that is where we are heading. No public protesting allowed. Forced to only display a British flag, unless in the privacy of your own home.

Sounds like totalitariansim to me.

forced to use the flag.? really? I’ve got an EU flag will that do?!

Yep in your own sitting room varian. Knock yourself out.

vegansrock Sat 20-Mar-21 19:43:08

The soviet states were forced to use their flag or else...

Careful. You'll be accused of being anti British.

Casdon Sat 20-Mar-21 19:42:40

For what it’s worth Marmadoit I don’t like the flag being cynically used by anybody to attempt to manipulate the public, it’s no better if it’s the Labour Party than the Tories.
