Does the display of union jacks by politicians making video calls from their homes not just appear ridiculous, but a tad sinister?

I was watching an interview with Jeremy Hunt today and it was interesting that he didn't have a flag. I wonder why.

Matt Hancock did an interview without the flag too. He did have a photograph of a cricketer bowling. I want to know who the cricketer is.

Maybe the cabinet aren't under orders to fly the flag after all.

I expect he got his pocket money stopped and sent to bed without any supper, though. ?

I don’t think many people see it as a possession of the right wing, vegansrock - but do you mean the extreme right wing or anyone who isn’t very firmly left?

I would say it’s only the substantial minority of English people (NB I didn’t say British) often of the so-called liberal intelligentsia type, who for decades now have despised their own country - often with a lot of breast-beating over empire, never mind that other countries had empires, too - and seize every possible opportunity to knock it.

Somewhere I’ve got a little book with a (comic) verse whose first line goes, ‘Everyone hates the English, including the English’,

I should maybe add that as someone extremely widely travelled and who’s lived in other countries, I’ve never once found or sensed that ‘everyone’ hates us, much as that English minority would like to think so.

Firecracker - do you ever debate, rather than going into responses like “rubbish”, attacks on people who don’t share your world view.

Firecracker123 Thu 25-Mar-21 08:20:25

My post was to veganrock

Rubbish it's only toxic to bitter remainers upset we've left the EU, if the order was that we had to fly the EU flag from all government buildings the posters objecting now to the Union Jack would be rejoicing. Remember the idiot outside the houses of Parliament and all the EU flags flying the Remainers on here lapped it up.

I agree vegans rock and wish that wasn’t so. We were walking with a group of friends, one had grown up in NI and has family there. They’re Catholic. His response to seeing a Union flag flying from a farm house was one of anxiety. He assumed the owners were Britain First types

vegansrock Thu 25-Mar-21 08:07:37

The thing is the union flag has had a toxic message for some people. It lost it a bit during the Olympics, but has been taken back by the right wing and there are members of our community who view it as representing their exclusion. Other countries don’t have that history.

Are you sure GrannyGravy13? And what lies will that be fought on - if "the emergency" isn't used as a reason to "postpone" it?

GrannyGravy13 Thu 25-Mar-21 07:54:44

I agree Kandinsky I have traveled round the world, flags flying everywhere, cannot see the problem.

Kandinsky Thu 25-Mar-21 07:43:04

I actually like seeing my flag flying everywhere ( UK ) I can’t see what the problem is?
If you live here then surely you must like living in the UK & all it stands for?
I’m very patriotic though and love my country. I also love it when I visit other countries and see their flag flying everywhere.
I honestly don’t get people who dislike it.
But yes, I’m sure if labour get in next time flying the UK flag will probably be illegal in case it upsets someone.

GrannyGravy13 Thu 25-Mar-21 07:20:39

Not to worry folks only four years until the next election...

vegansrock Thu 25-Mar-21 06:45:55

This country is the most divided since the civil war, the flag waving is just a cynical attempt to plaster over the cracks.

My across-the-road neighbour usually has two small union flags in his hanging baskets but this week he has added UJ bunting right along his fence. As far as I know he is not a right wing extremist but he definitely is a Rangers supporter. He was letting off fireworks when Rangers beat Celtic this weekend.

They really are taking the pee - just seeing how much they can get away with, to cover up the more sinister plans.

What is the government going to do if government buildings don't fly the flag every day?

Prison sentences? 'Re-education' camps? Sack them?

Government buildings will be flying our flag everyday according to the news.

Chin up Mr Drakeford, it didn't say what size

Just cancelled my flag pole as I don't want to be mistaken for a government building. I am going to build a bunker to hide in until the country regains it's sanity. FGS I have just read the guidelines on the Gov.UK website, who writes this rubbish? It is like an episode out of "Yes, minister". I despair (I am usually a really positive person!

Love it Foxie particularly the first sentence! Gave me a chuckle on a wet dreary day.

This could be fun in NI
