What an absolutely ludicrous threat by Annick Girardin. I’m not a Brexiteer, but I cannot think of any way to defend this.

hopefully they are least bringing back some potatoes

Mamie Thu 06-May-21 19:41:28

dogsmother I think the article above gives a bit more context to the difference between Jersey and Guernsey.

Whitewavemark2 Thu 06-May-21 19:31:08

As predicted the navy boats are withdrawing.

What an abuse of money and power.

dogsmother Thu 06-May-21 19:23:50

Mamie. There is an interim agreement with Guernsey in place and so currently no problem. However this could change if things escalate and can’t be resolved.

Alegrias1 Thu 06-May-21 18:23:40

Of course its to do with Brexit. Do you think it was just a spontaneous and coincidental little spat?

Have facts been banned for today? Read the article.

Thanks, mamie. A very interesting article.

I agree, it was a very interesting article merlotgran, especially the part that states Jersey were never part of the EU.

So it is nothing to do with Brexit

CanadianGran Thu 06-May-21 17:46:05

I don't really have any opinion of the matter, since I know fishing licenses are extremely complicated as was Brexit and all it entailed.

I would however love to hear the discussion at the table between my departed Jersey mother, and Breton father. Miss them.

dogsmother Thu 06-May-21 16:40:24

Ellie Anne….he could have used the Caymans much closer I’d have thought USA wise….and perhaps closer to what is perceived as a “tax haven” to those who don’t know.

Mamie Thu 06-May-21 16:38:25

Another excellent John Lichfield article explaining why things have turned sour in Jersey but not Guernsey.
unherd.com/thepost/dont-believe-the-hype-there-is-no-cod-war-in-jersey/
(I like the fact that it was actually a whelk war).

Ellianne Thu 06-May-21 16:31:27

Maizie is correct, you don't have to be a Jersey resident to stash your cash there. My father worked and lived in Houston and was paid in dollars. He banked in Jersey and sent us cheques in sterling from his account at Coutts St Helier.

Ellianne Thu 06-May-21 16:20:59

A little while back on a regular basis I used to catch the "vomit comet" (Condor Ferry) at 8 am out of St. Malo to St. Helier. The vessel was packed with French workers - business men, surgeons, harbour workers etc all going to work on the island.
France would indeed be very daft to make life difficult for its own citizens working there.

MaizieD Thu 06-May-21 16:20:54

So in Susie’s world every single person in jersey is there to minimise their income tax.

I don't think you understand what a tax haven is. You don't have to live in a place to be able register your business there and enjoy lower tax rates than you would if it were registered in the UK.

I'm sure all the CI natives pay their tax like everyone else who doesn't have 'complex' financial arrangements to minimise the tax they pay.

Wow! So in Susie’s world every single person in jersey is there to minimise their income tax. Does that include the shop assistants, the cleaners, the postman, the waiter, the road sweeper, the dialysis patient, the baby in SBCU?

This posturing and threatening behaviour probably scared the life out of some people and I doubt if many of them had much say in the islands becoming a tax haven, any more than you did with the outcome of the Brexit vote or the last election.

You seem so angry and bitter Susie. I am concerned for you!

Where did I say that? A tax haven is nothing to do with ‘ordinary ‘ people. And stop being so bloody insulting to me - how bloody dare you. You’ve just completely misinterpreted what I posted. - I am concerned for you and your lack of ability to correctly understand what I posted. Just stop it right with the personal attacks.

Living in North Cornwall am aware how hard it can be for those making a living from the sea so feel an affinity with the fishing industry residents of France
It is despicable, however, that France threaten to disrupt lives by turning off the Jersey power supply and need reminding that fishing is NOT the only business interest France has in Jersey.
Other business's and its people (who may also be French) living in Jersey, will suffer from French ' toys out of the pram' lets turn off the power we'll show them if we can't get our own way' Think about it France ?

Thank goodness for a sensible post.

Alegrias1 Thu 06-May-21 16:09:16

There's a comprehension problem here, isn't there?

Don’t shoot the messenger. He/she is probably posting what other people are saying/thinking but don’t have the nerve.

You didn’t have to repeat it .

I read today that Macron has the nickname ^Poundshop Putin^

And BJ was called Poundshop Trump - equally stupid and unfunny.

suziewoozie Thu 06-May-21 15:58:26

Asking why Brexit would be at the foot of it certainly sounds as though you didn’t think Brexit was involved . New licences were only issued because of Brexit. Why did you think it had happened?

Oh how I would love to see the awful posturing Macron severely trounced in the elections next year.
Marine Le Pen possibly ?

You’re surely not salivating at the thought of le Pen winning the election? Heaven forbid.
