What an absolutely ludicrous threat by Annick Girardin. I’m not a Brexiteer, but I cannot think of any way to defend this.

A licence is a licence. You can't expect to dictate conditions.

You can expect to discuss them - Jersey are deliberately playing silly buggers

dogsmother Thu 06-May-21 13:29:29

I don’t feel any need.

Allegria. I see Jersey there in some dubious company but not the Channel Islands. So I remain unchanged.

Give the evidence and then we’ll see.

dogsmother Thu 06-May-21 13:26:23

It’s a storm in a teacup. Jersey should be allowed to protect its fishing grounds, had the Frenchman just signed ( some did) and not been arrogant thinking they could do as they pleased……..

OK.

The best thing France can do is to ignore the nonsense
I think all Jersey wants is proof, ie paperwork
Bureaucracy.

I did think the French had a great talent for bureaucracy so can't see the problem.

The fishing boats are already heading home.

No! There is a list of tax haven, the Channel Isles are not on it.
Simple as that. I’m not technically savvy enough to post links or I would.
The Isle of Man is as much the same just less of a climate.
It has a huge financial industry much like London and perhaps that’s why folk get confused.

Can’t post the link - really? Folk are not getting confused.

Callistemon Thu 06-May-21 13:19:33

I do realize that there are problems at the moment but it is shown out of proportion by the UK newspapers. It is election time.

Perhaps dogsmother is looking at a different list? hmm

Do you mean this one? Number 27.

Whitewavemark2

A lot of companies trading in the U.K. have company addresses in Jersey.

Yes of course because it’s a freeloading tax haven

I have family who have lived on Jersey for nearly fifty years they own properties there. They don’t consider Jersey to be apart of the U.K. at all and they never have. They came here in the past to have hospital treatment because it’s superior here. (Their words) however they complained because they had to pay!. I think they should have to pay they have paid taxes to State of Jersey not to U.K.

I meant Not Tax Havens. You should actually do research on this.

Why Jersey is a tax haven.

Nothing is going to happen to Jersey - they will back down shortly on the fishing permits having provided a photo op to please all the Little Englanders.

Suzie you are woozie. Jersey and the Channel Islands are not havens. They are part of the British Isles and to have been threatened is not good. You are unpleasant in your attitude of “Who cares about the Channel Islands “

They are tax havens and not part of the U.K. - the British Isles are not a political entity. Woozie yourself

Just heard a Jersey fisherman on the radio saying the majority of his colleagues in Jersey are supporting the French fishermen as they “depend on each other”.
Wish I could link it to this discussion.

I don't think that ultimately it is about liking or not liking Macron. The French take politics and political debate pretty seriously and would not view it as a popularity contest.

Gannygangan Thu 06-May-21 09:47:28

French friends are not keen on Macron. They're not keen on Le Pen either.

Quite interesting FT article here.

A rejection of elites. Feelings of injustice. The desire to ‘take control’ of one’s country’s destiny.”

Seems it's not just the UK who are tired of elitism.
