Meanwhile, in Scotland....

We had a by-election. SNP won, Labour second, Tory third.

The new MSPs were sworn in and they used 13 different languages in their oaths.

People in Glasgow stood in the street surrounding a Home Office van trying to deport so called "illegals". And they did stop them. One man lay down under the van.

And we've been surge testing and giving vaccines to all adults in Moray, where the hotspot looks like stabilising.

Another day in paradise....?

These " ghetto's " weren't " ghetto's " until they put people in them to create " ghetto's ".

EllanVannin Fri 14-May-21 10:55:43

Life is what you make it. If you want to live surrounded by detritus etc, then that's your choice. It's down to the individual how they want to live, surely ?

Coming onto GN at the moment is like entering a parallel universe.

Why do you think that GrannyGravy13? Serious question.

Whitewavemark2 Fri 14-May-21 10:59:05

Because of opinions like this?

Chai Patel

One reason Priti Patel plans to place all asylum seekers in detention camps instead of housing them in the community is to stop their neighbours getting to know them. Similarly the Hostile Environment drives people underground by banning them from renting and working.

EllanVannin Fri 14-May-21 11:01:08

Would you throw all your old bulk items in the front garden and allow it to get overgrown with weeds ? NO, you'd do something about it----probably. It's called pride if you do something about it, and respecting the area in which you live.

EllanVannin Fri 14-May-21 11:03:16

Who's hostile ? That's all auto-suggestion in the hope that you'll get a caustic reply---putting words in people's mouths, it doesn't work.

Whitewavemark2 Fri 14-May-21 11:03:28

ev I’m having difficulty following your line of thought at the moment

GrannyGravy13 Fri 14-May-21 11:04:08

Alegrias1 simply because today so many posters seem angry and aggressive, so many issues are being taken to the extreme. Compromise and seeing others points of view seems to have disappeared down the rabbit hole on so many threads.

EllanVannin Fri 14-May-21 11:04:56

If you feel so strongly, help these people who are presumably your neighbours. Actions always speak louder than words.

I think you will find that it is a reaction to the authoritarian and hostile environment this government is pursuing. The more extreme the government, the more extreme the reaction.

Parallel universe indeed. hmm

Thanks for taking the time to answer GrannyGravy13

I think I agree with WWM2

GrannyGravy13 Fri 14-May-21 11:09:43

I get what you are saying Whitewavemark2 however hurling insults around on GN (and there have been many this morning) doesn’t solve anything.

Does it make the poster feel better? I am not sure.

Elegran Fri 14-May-21 11:10:49

Someone asked which languages.
www.thenational.scot/news/19296609.holyrood-msps-take-oaths-scots-gaelic-urdu-swearing-in-ceremony/

" languages from Scots to Zimbabwean Shona.

Before parliamentary business can begin, the representatives have to take the oath or affirmation."

Note that This must be done in English, but members are allowed to repeat in their chosen language. If many of their electorate understand that language better than they do English, surely it is a good thing to have them see and hear their representative taking the oath in a familiar language as well as in English?. Or do we want them to feel they are aliens and that they and their own language are rubbish?

Granny23 Fri 14-May-21 11:11:18

There is more to this than has been detailed above.

1) This was the UK Home Office throwing their weight around and obviously doing this provocatively by choosing the early morning of Eid to make their move.

2) The Scottish Government and the majority of Scottish residents, encourage and welcome immigrants but the powers re immigration are reserved for Westminster.

3) A neighbour spent the day lying between the wheels of the van to prevent the officials driving away. I call that heroic.

4) The Police were in attendance but no arrests were made, no one was injured. Therefore a spontaneous, peaceful protest, with direct action, not illegal currently, but will be soon when new legislation is in place. I say "Power to the people"

GrannyGravy13 Fri 14-May-21 11:11:38

Alegrias1 and Whitewavemark2 it’s not my intention to be contentious, I just feel that topics have boiled over and the results are unpleasant for all.

Alegrias1 Fri 14-May-21 11:15:04

You know I'm now worried that my post of 11:09 will be considered sarcastic sad

It was most definitely not, I hope it didn't come across that way.

I have obviously got this wrong as no one would call another person detritus surely? This word suggests they are less than human.

During the Holocaust, Nazis referred to Jews as rats. Hutus involved in the Rwanda genocide called Tutsis cockroaches. Slave owners throughout history considered slaves subhuman animals. In Less Than Human, David Livingstone Smith argues that it's important to define and describe dehumanization, because it's what opens the door for cruelty and genocide. It didn’t to me.

Elegran Fri 14-May-21 11:18:28

I'll list as many as I can from the article - English, Doric, Orcadian, Gaelic, German, Urdu, Zimbabwean Shona, British Sign Language, and from other accounts, Arabic, Scots, Punjabi, Welsh, Canadian French.

Nannan2 Fri 14-May-21 11:18:53

I thought you HAD to be 18 to vote BY LAW- how come they let 16& 17 yr olds vote there? Its bl**dy ridiculous!

Whitewavemark2 Fri 14-May-21 11:18:57

What insults? I am not aware of anything other than strong debate.

And believe me the debate will get more and more aggressive the more this government pursues its authoritarian agenda.

The U.K. populace with the odd exception has never accepted authoritarian government. We may by default appear to be slipping into the mire at present, but it won’t be tolerated.

At present unless and until the government prevents the judiciary, they can still rule on governments illegal policies.

“Judge criticises
@pritipatel
over policy for asylum seekers in pandemic."

"Court hears Home Secretary may have acted unlawfully in changing accommodation policy."

lemongrove Fri 14-May-21 11:19:43

I agree GG13 it seems to be the way that things are going, sadly.
No need for any insults being hurled because posters don’t agree on this subject.
On the subject of name shortening, if a poster has a long name expect it to be shortened or abbreviated, I am regularly addressed as Lemon and have no objections whatsoever.
Sometimes LG equally acceptable.

Elegran I was curious as to what the 13 languages were ....not objecting to it, it seems such a lot, and it wasn’t explained(until you did so) although I am surprised that they have to use English and not Gaelic as well.

Pinnywinch Fri 14-May-21 11:20:42

I totally agree with you. The scenes were disgusting but people were called on to join (by an elected person) the rabble.
However, Rangers fans (football) were told they were not to celebrate their league win.
Rangers fans have decided they will call it a demonstration and see if it is then allowed (sarcastic comment).

EllanVannin Fri 14-May-21 11:20:57

Do you mind not twisting my words PippaZ ?
