4-day Bank Holiday for Queen's Jubilee

Is it just me or is this actually only 2 days plus celebrations over the weekend?

In the news yesterday they gave details of this 'alleged' 4-day bank holiday to celebrate the queen's 70th jubilee next year. They said that celebrations will run from Thursday 2nd through to Sunday 5th June.

Never in all my 53years have I heard of a 'bank holiday' being held on a Saturday or Sunday. Yes, bank holidays do always fall on a Monday (with the exception of xmas, new year and good Friday) so the preceding weekend gets called 'the bank holiday weekend' but the holiday itself is only a 1-day affair.

So, why on earth are the government dressing this up as 4 days 'off work' rather than just 4 days of celebrations where people will get 2 days as a BH?

FarNorth Thu 03-Jun-21 00:32:28

Usual exaggeration from the government?

Kim19 Thu 03-Jun-21 02:42:44

I guess they're trying to big it up as it's such a significant occasion.

vegansrock Thu 03-Jun-21 05:56:07

One of those days will be in half term so for a lot of folks it will be one extra day.

When I was at a loose end I checked the international bank holidays in my desk diary. Yes I know, I must have been bored. Anyway I knew we have the lowest in the UK and so it was. Many european countries have 11 or 12 and we have just 8.
Between May and December ( 7 months!) we have only one bank holiday. Wouldn’t it be nice to break that long gap with a day , or two, in October to break it up a bit and it wouldn't affect where we are on the bank holiday competition. Nul pointe as ever.

Semantics. It's a 4 day weekend.

Exactly. I doubt most people will care what other names the four days' celebrations might be called by someone who has temporarily forgotten that bank holidays are always on Mondays.

Who knows, that "rule" might even change. Gasp! 🤯

Is Good Friday not a bank holiday?

LauraNorder Thu 03-Jun-21 08:49:24

Well spotted Rosie51

GrannyGravy13 Thu 03-Jun-21 08:50:53

What’s not to like?

A massive boost to the hospitality industry, time for family and friends to get together.

The Queen will be the longest reigning monarch of the UK and fourth longest reign worldwide a cause for celebration for those who are interested, those who are not can chose to ignore it.

Not really bothered what the long weekend is called

GrannyGravy13 Thu 03-Jun-21 08:51:51

New Years Day, Boxing Day and Christmas Day all fall on various days of the week?

Is Good Friday not a bank holiday?

It wasn't for many years in the industrial areas because of the expense and wasted time involved in shutting down industrial processes, restarting them for a day on the Saturday and then doing the same again for the Monday BH. When I lived in Sheffield we got Easter Monday and Tuesday for our Bank Holidays. I don't know if they still do as Sheffield has very little heavy industry now...

What does it matter? It'll be great!

Poppyred Thu 03-Jun-21 10:18:45

Exactly henetha - mountains out of molehills come to mind! 🙄🙄 Just enjoy........

As I understand it, the late May bank holiday is being moved to June, so that there will be a long weekend of celebration. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I’m fairly sure this has been done in the past for a special occasion,

Anyway, I intend to party like it’s 1999 😊

Blossoming Thu 03-Jun-21 10:58:04

Oops, meant to say this is 1 extra bank holiday, not 2, as 1 has been moved.

JenniferEccles Thu 03-Jun-21 11:07:51

Does it really matter what it’s called? It’s a wonderful opportunity to celebrate a momentous achievement by our Queen.

What a shame though that Prince Philip won’t be by her side.

Cindersdad Thu 03-Jun-21 17:12:57

What does Her Majesty say about it? She may just want a quiet life.

Really fail to understand why people should feel that this will be an exciting weekend.
Having anyone unelected sitting on a golden throne, has never had any effect on me and mine.
In 1977, my family and a friends used the days holiday to go to Whipsnade zoo, leaving behind the street parties. We had such a wonderful days outing in a virtually empty zoo. My children can still remember how much fun that day was for them.
Twice (though Hubbies work) we reeived invite to attend Royal Faarden Party - twice we refused - I had no reason to wish to stand around in a park in central London for hours!

As you may surmise my family are not royalists in any shape or form.
It really is about time, that some extra BankHolidays were rough in, as has been pointed out above, England has just about the lowest number of these in Europe. That long stretch from end of August to Christmas really need at least one more 4-day holiday weekend. Equally, it is a long stretch through winter , to go from Christmas to the Easter and a further Bank holiday is require towards end of February.
I really have no need of some national event to assit me in planning enjoyable bank holidays.

Talullah Mon 07-Jun-21 15:41:59

Well maybe you could go to the zoo again during these celebrations, Franbern. You're not going to be forced to wave a small flag. I'm not a full on Royalist by any means but it will be a nice break for many.

Mollygo Mon 07-Jun-21 15:51:37

It’s a long weekend. Royalist or not, pro government or not, I don’t see anyone who doesn’t actually have to work, (like nurses or the police) saying they are not accepting the extra holiday.
Re additional bank holidays, e.g. in October, count me in!

MayBee70 Mon 07-Jun-21 17:17:48

Am I the only person thinking it’s tempting fate a bit with the Queen being a bit elderly?

Yes this is true, but in say, Germany, where my sister lives, if the date of say May Day falls on a Tuesday that is the day you have off, not on the nearest Monday as we do. In 2022 May Day falls on a Sunday, That is the day it is celebrated. Too many lost working hours if Monday included too as we would.
