And this over a long period of time now. This year only, we are at 74 to 1.

The Labour Party have asked me to embrace Brexit. I can certainly accept that it has happened, but I will never ever embrace it.

Kali I hope you will accept what you have no power to change and manage to find peace with it.
It’s no way to live otherwise.

I am such a happy, joyfull and positive person, at peace with myself. That is the reason I am not going to put down tools and fight for the best Brexit possible, not the one being forced upon us, and more importantly, our grandchildren.

The way to live in onwards and forwards, not lying back thinking of Ye Olde England. I want to look my grandchildren in the eye when they ask the inevitable question.

It’s the EU of today that most remainers are missing. Freedom of movement for example. The EU of 25 years ago yeah, sign me up. That was the problem, it kept changing.

MaizieD Mon 07-Jun-21 21:10:02

Does anyone seriously think we’ll be rejoining the EU within the next 20 years?

I don't think that many, if any, people on this thread were suggesting rejoining. soon

There is no reason why we shouldn't rejoin the Single Market though (which, despite what has been claimed, is not the EU).

Once the turn is initiated and the ship moving, it will happen very quickly.

Sadly, the ship has already sailed. Too late to tack and jibe I'm afraid.

Done ( in this context) is that we are out of the EU.

Out of EU- means nothing. How? What? Price? You have NO idea what it actually means. Neither do I, btw, neither does Johnson, Frost or any of his gang of useless reprobates.

lemongrove Mon 07-Jun-21 21:02:16

In that case you must be pinning your hopes on Scotland leaving the Union and being able to rejoin the EU.
We all need dreams I suppose.

A favourable wind Aleg, maybe a force ten gale??

nah, just a bit of a breeze wink

What is 'done' - what does Brexit mean? No-one knows yet- not even Johnson, nor his Goverment.

^Just an un-elected civil servant^
Like Ursula van der Leyen, if you add failed politician to the spec.

You took the words just out of my mouth- that was the very point! Geese, ganders- exactly. Thanks for hitting that nail right in.

lemongrove Mon 07-Jun-21 20:56:23

Just to add, it doesn’t matter what any polls show, so don’t pin any hopes on that about us rejoining the EU, it’s done.

Alegrias1 Mon 07-Jun-21 20:55:38

With a favourable wind, I could still be here in 50 years.

Guess how I'll vote grin

lemongrove Mon 07-Jun-21 20:53:47

I did say 50 years Kali....so good luck with that,?and am sure that we all love our grandchildren ( I know I do.)

Kali2 Mon 07-Jun-21 20:50:52

lemongrove - I intend to be around in 10 years, in 20 years and more- as both my parents we almost 100 when they died, and many relatives way beyond 100.

But this site is called Gransnet- because most of us are grans, and granpas, and we love our grand-children - and want them to grow in an open, tolerant and caring society, with great links and exchanges with our neighbours. That is what caring grand-parents do- care.

Not a chance.
I doubt we’ll ever rejoin because they won’t want us! That’s what remainers seem to forget. They talk as if we can just swan back in when we feel like it.
It will take at least 10 years to see if brexit is a success, if it isn’t then they’ll be another referendum, if it’s ‘yes rejoin’ they’ll be 5 years of red tape. None of us on here will be alive by then.
I don’t get these polls either as none of the pro EU parties have done well in recent elections.

Absolutely no one has suggested they thought we could swan back - just to opposite. You're just making it up as you go along.

I very much doubt that there will be another referendum in the next 50 years about the EU....and perhaps not even then.
We will make a success of Brexit, of course we will.
I also very much doubt that anyone really thought it would be plain sailing from the very ‘start’, there is so much to sort out.
Nobody on GN will be alive by then, so another reason to get on with lives and enjoy them, instead of handwringing about leaving a trading bloc.

GillT57 Mon 07-Jun-21 19:08:52

It will take at least 10 years to see if brexit is a success, but I thought many in the Tory party, and indeed on GN were assuring those of us who were very unhappy about the referendum result, that everything was going to be wonderful, STRAIGHT AWAY? Nobody on the leave side, certainly not Farage said it would take at least 10 years. Are you admitting that we have been lied to? Or, even worse, that you made a dreadful mistake? No, that's silly, I must have had too much sun....sunshine

And who is he? Just an un-elected civil servant and pen pusher- I thought we didn't want to be 'ruled by them'?

vegansrock Mon 07-Jun-21 18:41:40

David Frost has shown he is as dim as the rest of them by trying to renegotiated that wonderful oven ready deal which has damaged NI businesses, and blaming the EU for not wanting to change what the U.K boasted about.

allule Mon 07-Jun-21 18:38:31

I remember when we heard the shock referendum result, we assumed such a close result would mean we left officially, but kept as close links as possible.
Instead, we have drawn as far apart as could be managed.
Perhaps this could be ameliorated by rebuilding some important cooperation, but not by this government.

I thought this might be an interesting intelligent debate. ? How wrong can you be

How sad, what a pity.

It is a massive ship to turn, and it takes a lot of time. Once the turn is initiated and the ship moving, it will happen very quickly.
