Brexit is fast becoming a disaster

HMRC have published some figures to show that food and drink exports fell by 2bn in the first 3 months since Brexit.

Dairy was down a massive 90%? and there were losses across the board.

The figures show that rather it being a teething issue as the Tories would have us believe it is in fact structural and likely to continue unless there is some sort of move towards say the SM.

Is there a better term to describe people that continue to ignore the fact that this country is in a bad way due to brexit and also seem to ignore the fact that the man that took us into brexit (using lies) is now the PM and is a proven liar, not just in this country by but throughout the world. Oh, and a breaker of promises, too.

Cloth-eared = Brexiters

I find that insulting people is not the best way to engage anyone in debate or get them to answer any questions posed.

Boris Johnson(2017) - "We hear that we're first in line to do a great free trade deal with the United States"

I know but I wondered if some of them had had a vision or something and could now answer the question.!!

Welshwife Highly unlikely that you'll get a response. There is rarely, if ever, a response from those who believe that the EU is run by bureaucrats.

Welshwife Wed 22-Sept-21 14:09:17

Can somebody who knows the EU is governed by unelected people please explain who I have been voting for in all the European elections for nearly 50 years - I thought it was for MEPs.

Alegrias1 Wed 22-Sept-21 12:33:40

Americans, and Democrats in particular, do not understand that the EU is not a democratic institution like the United States, but is instead run by unelected officials.

??? Sorry, wait, I'll get myself under control.

OK. That's better.

Obama, who removed the bust of Churchill from the Oval Office, warned the UK that we would go to the back of the queue if we dared to leave the EU. Now, Biden is simply following the same line.

So the then-president of the USA said they would do something and another president has done it. They're slippery, these people, aren't they?

The lesson yet to be understood and learned by Brexiters that trade is always easier and more productive if you are geographically close and already have a presence in that particular market place.

It isn’t rocket science but Brexiters make such heavy weather of it.

Whitewavemark2 Wed 22-Sept-21 12:13:00

Brexiters were warned time and time again that the USA was a no go. Obama warned us and brexiters poo pooed him.

Remainers used their intelligence and worked it out but oh no Brexiters knew better didn’t they!

This is project obvious in action.

Urmstongran I expect you realise that the US is already the UK's biggest single export market. Johnson was hoping to capitalise on that. Where do you suggest he seeks new export markets and trading partners?

Quite...

It's Unicorns and have cake and eat it all over again. Just how far divorced from reality can these Brexiters get?

Maybe POTUS should sort his own borders out (Mexico there are videos online showing US border force/police on horseback charging men, women and children seeking refuge) before pontificating on the U.K.’s borders?

Maybe he should, but that's none of our business.

OTOH, the US was a key player in procuring the GFA and there are a lot of voters in the US of Irish descent who have, historically, no cause to love the British.

Just tell me why the UK should have any clout at all with the US? WE have destroyed our link with the EU, which was valued by the US, we have little to offer them as an ally in the way a military resources, though we do very kindly but our nuclear missies from them (was Johnson's plan to increase out nuclear arsenal and attempt to sweeten relationships or provide some economic leverage, I wonder) and we are not a massively important market (and by the time the tories have finished with their austerity plans there will be even less money around)

Just to save everyone time can I just draft the standard Brexiter argument then they can cut and paste it:

"It's all everyone else fault because they don't like us. If only they had realised that all they need do was to agree to all of our terms everything would be OK"

Biden's blundering exit from Afghanistan without coordinating with his allies shows he has zero respect for the UK. Boris should not waste his time.

But he had to try to get a trade deal from the US. Even though it wouldn't in any way compensate for the loss of EU trade the optics would look god and the UK isn't going to get anything as big from all the other little deals it might get.

I really don't know why people think that the UK has any sort of clout when it is just a small market with not a great deal to offer other countries.

Of course, there is an excellent market right on our doorstep ...

Dinahmo Wed 22-Sept-21 11:37:36

It's about time we learned that there is no special relationship with the US.

Biden is no fan of the UK and has previously described Boris Johnson as a 'clone of Donald Trump'.

Biden once told the BBC he was Irish, which means he has little sympathy for Northern Ireland still being part of the British Empire (as he sees it).

The chances of a quick deal died when Biden won the presidency. This really isn't ground breaking news.

Clear warning given to Johnson over NI by Biden.

vegansrock Wed 22-Sept-21 08:50:47

Never mind we can sell cheese to Mexico.

Whitewavemark2 Wed 22-Sept-21 07:57:37

British business will be at such a disadvantage compared to the EU businesses.

Yes Biden has made it clear that there will be no deal.

Almost certainly over Ireland and Brexit although the press won’t be reporting that.

Well it’s on GMB

I think Johnson has conceded that the much promised trade deal with the US post Brexit isn’t going to happen any time soon. Good. We aren’t going to be flooded with cheap low welfare meat from the US. I thought one of the selling points of Brexit was the ability to strike all these tailor made trade deals around the world and not just have those brokered by the EU? Now we are scrambling around trying to join other trading blocs in the far east which will broker trade for us, and unlike being in the EU we will have had no say. Johnson was a national embarrassment on US TV - scruffy, mumbling, ummming and eerrring. He looked totally out of his depth at the UN. Pity he didn’t reshuffle himself last week.
