I don't want to get rid of the monarchy in favour of a Head of State trisher. I'm not belittling anyone who wants to see and end to the monarchy. I'm not saying there isn't anyone who could do the job and I'm not saying it would be too difficult to do.

Isn't that what you're doing here, trying to belittle the monarchists? And how do you know the monarchists haven't thought about it? Maybe they have thought long and hard already and made their decision before this thread was even started.

What do we actually want a head of state to do? Are they going to be running the country - Trump signing all his Presidential orders, or is it going to be like the current monarch - hosting state banquets, presenting medals and endlessly opening schools, hospitals and libraries? I can imagine plenty of applicants who would like the running the country bit, perhaps not so many wanting to spend their lives shaking hands with local officials.

So if the same can be said for governments Dinahmodo you advocate getting rid of universal suffrage? Or is it perhaps the fact that one elected government may be a catastrophe but at least you can change it at the next election a reason to keep it? And if so isn't the same true of a H of S.

If you only spend 30 seconds considering it could it be that you are responding emotionally?- which might make you feel happy but really shouldn't thinking people at least consider the alternative?
If elections are difficult would you be happy for us to get rid of them completely? Shouldn't democracy be something which challenges us.
As for who could do it. Well someone like Kate Bingham who organised the vaccine programme. Someone willing to use the best and achieve the most.

I can think of better things to spend the money on tbh than billboards. Then it’s a free country.

You only have to look at the Tory government, quite a few of the Labour party, many of the House of Lords, and remember Brexit when just under half the country fell under the spell of snake oil salesmen and charlatans, many unfit for public office? That in itself is enough to confirm for me that the electorate cannot be trusted to have independent thought, it would probably end up as someone like Rupert Murdoch. Nope, any country which applauds Pritt Patel, thinks Boris is 'doing his best' just does not have the intellectual maturity to make important decisions.

Grany We can still have a constitution - if the politicians would get round to it. The way the nation is at the moment we could end up with Johnson as our head of state, or the American version which would be even worse.

I dare say Johnson could do a lot less damage sitting in a carriage and waving than he is doing right now.
